Importance Of Technology Investments In The Logistics Service Providers: A Case Study Of UPS And Its Use Of Online Tools

    Get PDF
Logistics service providers must become competitive in mail delivery, customer relationship management (CRM) strategies, and technological integration.  UPS, for example, uses a logistics service strategy to effectively manage the logistical requirements for its 7.9 million daily customers.  Within the competitive market of parcel delivery, logistics service providers must routinely invest in technology in an e-commerce environment in order to successfully develop strategies to meet the demands of B2B and B2C customers, while accomplishing customer efficiency and return on investments.  This strategy has helped logistics service providers to leverage their core competencies; in particular for UPS to become the shipping industry leader in e-commerce.  This research outlines the history, inner workings and culture of UPS, while simultaneously examining the subtleties, which have led to the company’s extraordinary success.  Throughout this analysis, the research will show that in fact there is a rather complex model, which allows UPS to function, as it incorporates B2B, B2C, investments in technology and on-line tools into an outcome of seemingly effortless customer efficiency

Digital Receipt System Using Mobile Device Technologies

Cell phones are the most prevalent computing devices. They come pre-loaded with many different functions such as a digital camera, a mobile web browser, a streaming media player, games, GPS navigation, and more. However, if the banks have their way, the cell phone may become the preferred method of payment for everyday purchases. When that happens, there will be a need to securely send and store the receipt information so that they can be quickly analyzed. This thesis will demonstrate the use of a Digital Receipt system to manage transactions using Bluetooth technology to communicate between mobile devices. This expands on a previous thesis titled Bi-Directional Information Exchange with Handheld Computing Devices. (Qaddoura, 2006) Cell phones have now been added into the setup. Thereby, expanding the Digital Receipt concept to include many more affordable computing devices, thus, increasing the likelihood that this application will be accepted by the general public

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology of the future that is being widely applied in business environment. Companies around the world are starting to apply IoT technologies to ensure the most efficient business possible. The importance of the application of this technology has been particularly evident in improving logistics processes. This paper describes IoT applications in processes such as supply chain management, i.e. control of transport and storage of goods and materials. Examples of smart solutions offered by IoT technology are presented. Various technologies and standards are used in the implementation of the IoT. The scientific community is increasingly researching new technologies such as NB-IoT and 5G, which provide an even greater potential for IoT development. Therefore, this paper shows a comparison of these technologies and explains how IoT devices work with them

Supply chain visibility for improving inbound logistics: a design science approach

Supply chain visibility (SCV) has been gaining recognition in recent years as a key factor for achieving analytical capabilities and improving supply chain performance. However, levels of SCV implementation lag behind current technological advances. This research was motivated by the lack of visibility in inbound logistics, which limits the possibility of managing deviation, in particular concerning changes in arrival time of incoming goods, in large industrial firms. We addressed this problem by adopting a design science approach. In particular, we followed context–intervention–mechanism–outcome (CIMO) logic to map and analyse material and information flows. The problems areas were successively translated via business and functional requirements into technological solutions. We evaluated alternative technologies using controlled experiments that mimicked real-life situations. This study provides guidance for manufacturing companies aiming to enhance deviation management and predictive capabilities by improving visibility in their inbound logistics and potentially extending visibility to other areas, such as internal and outbound fl

Perceptions of overstimulation amalgamated the current relationship between humans and technology and the impact of the information that inundates us. Through the use of biophysical sensors, this audiovisual performance explores the interconnectivity and interaction with computers, technology, and the stimuli that surround us. The profusion of movement, heart, and audio data flowing steadily through the system allow for endless play on aesthetics while also speaking to the principal themes of overstimulation and overinformation captured within the performance.https://www.ester.ee/record=b5448683*es

On the use of Wireless Sensor Networks in Preventative Maintenance for Industry 4.0

    Get PDF
The goal of this paper is to present a literature study on the use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in Preventative Maintenance applications for Industry 4.0. Requirements for industrial applications are discussed along with a comparative of the characteristics of the existing and emerging WSN technology enablers. The design considerations inherent to WSNs becoming a tool to drive maintenance efficiencies are discussed in the context of implementations in the research literature and commercial solutions available on the market
