    Creative methodologies for understanding a creative industry

    The chapter presents a conceptual framework for the identification and analysis of value creating and value capture systems within creative industry contexts based on theoretical and empirical studies. It provides a ‘digital economy’ perspective of the creative industries as a micro-level example of a wider analytical problem, which is how society changes itself. The increasing level of innovation and creativity produces greater levels of instability in social structures (habits, norms etc.) Completely new industries can arise (and ‘creatively’ destroy old ones) as new stabilised patterns form, particularly where entry costs are tumbling, such as digital milieu. Observations of workshops over several days with creative groups, interviews with creative enterprises, literature reviews on creative industries, business models and value systems have informed the analysis and conceptualisation. As a result we present a conceptual framework that we suggest can capture how novelty arises as emergent order over time. We have extended previous work that investigates the significance of emergence in theorising entrepreneurship into an exploration of how to articulate the creation and flow of value and effective ontology in a creative landscape. In the digital economy, the creative industries revolve around dynamic, innovative and often unorthodox collaborations, whereby numerous large, small and micro-businesses come together for the duration of a project, then disband and form new partnerships for the next project. Research designs must therefore address multiple contexts and levels presenting an analytical challenge to researchers. Methodologically, we suggest that the framework has analytical potential to support the collection of data: ordering and categorising empirical observations concerning how different phenomena emerge over time across multiple levels of analysis and contexts. Conceptually, the work broadens the notions of ‘business model’ to consider value creating systems and particular states reached by those systems in their evolution. The work contributes new concepts for researchers in this field and a wider framework for practitioners and policy makers

    Modelling Visual Neglect: Computational Insights into Conscious Perception

    Background: Visual neglect is an attentional deficit typically resulting from parietal cortex lesion and sometimes frontal lesion. Patients fail to attend to objects and events in the visual hemifield contralateral to their lesion during visual search. Methodology/Principal Finding: The aim of this work was to examine the effects of parietal and frontal lesion in an existing computational model of visual attention and search and simulate visual search behaviour under lesion conditions. We find that unilateral parietal lesion in this model leads to symptoms of visual neglect in simulated search scan paths, including an inhibition of return (IOR) deficit, while frontal lesion leads to milder neglect and to more severe deficits in IOR and perseveration in the scan path. During simulations of search under unilateral parietal lesion, the model’s extrastriate ventral stream area exhibits lower activity for stimuli in the neglected hemifield compared to that for stimuli in the normally perceived hemifield. This could represent a computational correlate of differences observed in neuroimaging for unconscious versus conscious perception following parietal lesion.     Temporal Analysis of Activity Patterns of Editors in Collaborative Mapping Project of OpenStreetMap

    In the recent years Wikis have become an attractive platform for social studies of the human behaviour. Containing millions records of edits across the globe, collaborative systems such as Wikipedia have allowed researchers to gain a better understanding of editors participation and their activity patterns. However, contributions made to Geo-wikis_wiki-based collaborative mapping projects_ differ from systems such as Wikipedia in a fundamental way due to spatial dimension of the content that limits the contributors to a set of those who posses local knowledge about a specific area and therefore cross-platform studies and comparisons are required to build a comprehensive image of online open collaboration phenomena. In this work, we study the temporal behavioural pattern of OpenStreetMap editors, a successful example of geo-wiki, for two European capital cities. We categorise different type of temporal patterns and report on the historical trend within a period of 7 years of the project age.     The Bird's Ear View: Audification for the Spectral Analysis of Heliospheric Time Series Data.

    The sciences are inundated with a tremendous volume of data, and the analysis of rapidly expanding data archives presents a persistent challenge. Previous research in the field of data sonification suggests that auditory display may serve a valuable function in the analysis of complex data sets. This dissertation uses the heliospheric sciences as a case study to empirically evaluate the use of audification (a specific form of sonification) for the spectral analysis of large time series. Three primary research questions guide this investigation, the first of which addresses the comparative capabilities of auditory and visual analysis methods in applied analysis tasks. A number of controlled within-subject studies revealed a strong correlation between auditory and visual observations, and demonstrated that auditory analysis provided a heightened sensitivity and accuracy in the detection of spectral features. The second research question addresses the capability of audification methods to reveal features that may be overlooked through visual analysis of spectrograms. A number of open-ended analysis tasks quantitatively demonstrated that participants using audification regularly discovered a greater percentage of embedded phenomena such as low-frequency wave storms. In addition, four case studies document collaborative research initiatives in which audification contributed to the acquisition of new domain-specific knowledge. The final question explores the potential benefits of audification when introduced into the workflow of a research scientist. A case study is presented in which a heliophysicist incorporated audification into their working practice, and the “Think-Aloud” protocol is applied to gain a sense for how audification augmented the researcher’s analytical abilities. Auditory observations are demonstrated to make significant contributions to ongoing research, including the detection of previously unidentified equipment-induced artifacts. This dissertation provides three primary contributions to the field: 1) an increased understanding of the comparative capabilities of auditory and visual analysis methods, 2) a methodological framework for conducting audification that may be transferred across scientific domains, and 3) a set of well-documented cases in which audification was applied to extract new knowledge from existing data archives.     Circadian patterns of Wikipedia editorial activity: A demographic analysis

    Wikipedia (WP) as a collaborative, dynamical system of humans is an appropriate subject of social studies. Each single action of the members of this society, i.e. editors, is well recorded and accessible. Using the cumulative data of 34 Wikipedias in different languages, we try to characterize and find the universalities and differences in temporal activity patterns of editors. Based on this data, we estimate the geographical distribution of editors for each WP in the globe. Furthermore we also clarify the differences among different groups of WPs, which originate in the variance of cultural and social features of the communities of editors

    Life editing: Third-party perspectives on lifelog content

    Lifelog collections digitally capture and preserve personal experiences and can be mined to reveal insights and understandings of individual significance. These rich data sources also offer opportunities for learning and discovery by motivated third parties. We employ a custom-designed storytelling application in constructing meaningful lifelog summaries from third-party perspectives. This storytelling initiative was implemented as a core component in a university media-editing course. We present promising results from a preliminary study conducted to evaluate the utility and potential of our approach in creatively interpreting a unique experiential dataset

    Sustainable business model innovation: The role of boundary work for multi-stakeholder alignment

    This study focuses on the boundary-spanning nature of sustainable business model innovation, studying multi-stakeholder engagement and alignment. Drawing on the concept of boundary work, we explore the different types of organizational boundary changes between focal companies and their external stakeholders, investigating specifically the process of exploring, negotiating, disrupting and realigning organizational boundaries. Based on an exploratory study of nine different sustainable business model initiatives from for-profit and non-profit organizations, our analysis shows how actors involved need to find alignment at normative, instrumental and strategic dimensions in order to achieve sustainable value creation. However, complexity for alignment emerges through different understandings of value,diverging interests, division of risks and responsibilities, and existing processes and activities that limits actors’ openness to align. Mutual boundary changes are thus necessary in the process of multi-stakeholder engagement in order to enhance organizations’understanding of value and to capture the envisioned value. This paper functions as an agenda-setting paper, presenting first insights on how the boundary work lens can advance our understanding of alignment processes between focal organizations and their external stakeholders, required for sustainable business model innovation
