    An Analyst's Assistant for the Interpretation of Vehicle Track Data

    This report describes the Analyst's Assistant, a software system for language-interactive, collaborative user-system interpretation of events, specifically targeting vehicle events that can be recognized on the basis of vehicle track data. The Analyst's Assistant utilizes language not only as a means of interaction, but also as a basis for internal representation of scene information, background knowledge, and results of interpretation. Building on this basis, the system demonstrates emerging intelligent systems techniques related to event recognition, summarization of events, partitioning of subtasks between user and system, and handling of language and graphical references to scene entities during interactive analysis

    Verb Classes and Alternations in Bangla, German, English, and Korean

    In this report, we investigate the relationship between the semantic and syntactic properties of verbs. Our work is based on the English Verb Classes and Alternations of (Levin, 1993). We explore how these classes are manifested in other languages, in particular, in Bangla, German, and Korean. Our report includes a survey and classification of several hundred verbs from these languages into the cross-linguistic equivalents of Levin's classes. We also explore ways in which our findings may be used to enhance WordNet in two ways: making the English syntactic information of WordNet more fine-grained, and making WordNet multilingual

So far attempts to use syntax have been ad hoc, choosing to use some syntactic information but still ignoring most of the tree structure. This thesis describes the design and implementation of SMARTQA, a proof-of-concept question answering system that compares syntactic trees in a principled manner. Specifically, SMARTQA uses a tree edit-distance algorithm to calculate the similarity between unordered, unrooted syntactic trees. The general case of this problem is NP-complete; in practice, SMARTQA demonstrates that an optimized implementation of the algorithm can be feasibly used for question answering applications.by Daniel Loreto.M.Eng

    This paper presents the lexical component of the START Question Answering system developed at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. START is able to interpret correctly a wide range of semantic relationships associated with alternate expressions of the arguments of verbs. The design of the system takes advantage of the results of recent linguistic research into the structure of the lexicon, allowing START to attain a broader range of coverage than many existing systems
