Crocs: Cross-Technology Clock Synchronization for WiFi and ZigBee
Clock synchronization is a key function in embedded wireless systems and
networks. This issue is equally important and more challenging in IoT systems
nowadays, which often include heterogeneous wireless devices that follow
different wireless standards. Conventional solutions to this problem employ
gateway-based indirect synchronization, which suffers low accuracy. This paper
for the first time studies the problem of cross-technology clock
synchronization. Our proposal called Crocs synchronizes WiFi and ZigBee devices
by direct cross-technology communication. Crocs decouples the synchronization
signal from the transmission of a timestamp. By incorporating a barker-code
based beacon for time alignment and cross-technology transmission of
timestamps, Crocs achieves robust and accurate synchronization among WiFi and
ZigBee devices, with the synchronization error lower than 1 millisecond. We
further make attempts to implement different cross-technology communication
methods in Crocs and provide insight findings with regard to the achievable
accuracy and expected overhead
Trusted GNSS-Based Time Synchronization for Industry 4.0 Applications
The protection of satellite-derived timing information is becoming a fundamental requirement in Industry 4.0 applications, as well as in a growing number of critical infrastructures. All the industrial systems where several nodes or devices communicate and/or coordinate their functionalities by means of a communication network need accurate, reliable and trusted time synchronization. For instance, the correct operation of automation and control systems, measurement and automatic test systems, power generation, transmission, and distribution typically require a sub-microsecond time accuracy. This paper analyses the main attack vectors and stresses the need for software integrity control at network nodes of Industry 4.0 applications to complement existing security solutions that focus on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio-frequency spectrum and Precision Time Protocol (PTP), also known as IEEE-1588. A real implementation of a Software Integrity Architecture in accordance with Trusted Computing principles concludes the work, together with the presentation of promising results obtained with a flexible and reconfigurable testbed for hands-on activities
Integrated Sensing and Communications: Recent Advances and Ten Open Challenges
It is anticipated that integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) would be
one of the key enablers of next-generation wireless networks (such as beyond 5G
(B5G) and 6G) for supporting a variety of emerging applications. In this paper,
we provide a comprehensive review of the recent advances in ISAC systems, with
a particular focus on their foundations, system design, networking aspects and
ISAC applications. Furthermore, we discuss the corresponding open questions of
the above that emerged in each issue. Hence, we commence with the information
theory of sensing and communications (SC), followed by the
information-theoretic limits of ISAC systems by shedding light on the
fundamental performance metrics. Next, we discuss their clock synchronization
and phase offset problems, the associated Pareto-optimal signaling strategies,
as well as the associated super-resolution ISAC system design. Moreover, we
envision that ISAC ushers in a paradigm shift for the future cellular networks
relying on network sensing, transforming the classic cellular architecture,
cross-layer resource management methods, and transmission protocols. In ISAC
applications, we further highlight the security and privacy issues of wireless
sensing. Finally, we close by studying the recent advances in a representative
ISAC use case, namely the multi-object multi-task (MOMT) recognition problem
using wireless signals.Comment: 26 pages, 22 figures, resubmitted to IEEE Journal. Appreciation for

A Survey of Clock Synchronization Over Packet-Switched Networks
Clock synchronization is a prerequisite for the realization of emerging applications in various domains such as industrial automation and the intelligent power grid. This paper surveys the standardized protocols and technologies for providing synchronization of devices connected by packet-switched networks. A review of synchronization impairments and the state-of-the-art mechanisms to improve the synchronization accuracy is then presented. Providing microsecond to sub-microsecond synchronization accuracy under the presence of asymmetric delays in a cost-effective manner is a challenging problem, and still an open issue in many application scenarios. Further, security is of significant importance for systems where timing is critical. The security threats and solutions to protect exchanged synchronization messages are also discussed
