Digital literacy is a significant component of youth, information and access. Here, the author examines three core issues surrounding youth digital literacy: issues of access, knowledge, and ethical use, and argues that by being aware of youths’ needs, particularly those in under-served populations, librarians can make informed decisions about their sometimes conflicting roles as both advocates for and protectors of youth

Despite enormous gains in educational technology and access to information, today’s students still struggle with digital literacy. In fact, some argue that today’s students are so distracted by digital media that their literacy skills are falling behind previous generations. In order to combat this phenomenon, researchers have singled out certain critical literacy skills for today’s students that, when taught effectively, will help those students develop into competent and productive adults: collaboration, composition, attention, evaluation, and responsibility. This study highlights and analyzes this important literacy research in order to help teachers better equip their twenty-first century students. Christian teachers especially should be willing to investigate the critical skills identified, decide on a unified approach to integrate them into their curriculum, and highlight them with students so that graduates of Christian education are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to use digital media to advance God’s Kingdom

Digitally literate: framework for the development of digital literacy

    Get PDF
The development of information and communication technology is placing the need for the acquisition of digital skills at the same level of the acquisition of conventional reading and calculus competences. The importance of being digitally literate increases as society becomes progressively more digital. This paper explores the concept of digital literacy and it intends to develop a framework for the development and dissemination of digital literacy as well as to propose a survey that will throughout time provide an assessment of individuals' digital skills. It begins by examining the various definitions of digital literacies and proceeds then to a discussion of what is being done to promote them and what can be done to improve their dissemination. The framework this paper proposes is composed of three core elements: access to technology, education and culture. The survey it recommends is an European Union-wide instrument of digital literacy measurement

Methods: A total of 200 chemistry teacher candidate students at the teacher training faculty, Universitas Lampung were randomly selected as research samples. The data obtained were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis techniques, reliability, correlation, average value, and variance. Findings: Analysis shows that the questionnaire items are grouped into five main factors with the Cronbach alpha coefficient and the percentage of variance as follows: attitudes towards digital content creation (ι = 0.919; s2 = 39.546%); attitudes towards digital information (ι = 0.885; s2 = 7.806%); attitudes towards digital security (ι = 0.871; s2 = 4.321%); attitudes towards digital problem solving (ι = 0.755; s2 = 3.410%); and attitudes towards digital information (ι = 0.793; s2 = 2.974%). Conclusion: The comparison of the mean and grand mean values shows that attitudes towards information and digital security are more dominant factors in how chemistry teacher students respond to digital devices that support learning. Keywords: digital attitude competence, chemistry teacher candidates, factor analysis.Abstrak: Menilai Kompetensi Sikap Digital Calon Guru Kimia di Indonesia: Suatu Kasus di Universitas Lampung. Academic Literacies: A Critical Review of a Core Information Systems Postgraduate Subject

    Get PDF
This paper presents a case study review of a major assessment task in a core postgraduate-level subject in the Information Systems (IS) discipline. Through a critical analysis, the review identified three types of literacies that the subject aims to distil in students: critical, academic and digital literacies. The critical analysis was used to identify whether, and how, students were taught these literacies through the completion of a major assessment, which asked students to review an existing information system. Three opportu nities for improvement were identified, these were: greater use of scaffolding in the development of literacy skills; involving experts from across the institution and industry to develop student skills; and embedding technology within assessments. Validation of the case study findings to determine their generalizability is underway. It is envisaged that these three methods can be applied in any information systems subject to improve students’ literacies. Through their application, it is expected that students will be better equipped to deal with the continual changes they will face in their careers
