    Experimental Study of Compressed Stack Algorithms in Limited Memory Environments

    The compressed stack is a data structure designed by Barba et al. (Algorithmica 2015) that allows to reduce the amount of memory needed by a certain class of algorithms at the cost of increasing its runtime. In this paper we introduce the first implementation of this data structure and make its source code publicly available. Together with the implementation we analyse the performance of the compressed stack. In our synthetic experiments, considering different test scenarios and using data sizes ranging up to 2^{30} elements, we compare it with the classic (uncompressed) stack, both in terms of runtime and memory used. Our experiments show that the compressed stack needs significantly less memory than the usual stack (this difference is significant for inputs containing 2000 or more elements). Overall, with a proper choice of parameters, we can save a significant amount of space (from two to four orders of magnitude) with a small increase in the runtime (2.32 times slower on average than the classic stack). These results hold even in test scenarios specifically designed to be challenging for the compressed stack

    EbbRT: Elastic Building Block Runtime - case studies

    We present a new systems runtime, EbbRT, for cloud hosted applications. EbbRT takes a different approach to the role operating systems play in cloud computing. It supports stitching application functionality across nodes running commodity OSs and nodes running specialized application specific software that only execute what is necessary to accelerate core functions of the application. In doing so, it allows tradeoffs between efficiency, developer productivity, and exploitation of elasticity and scale. EbbRT, as a software model, is a framework for constructing applications as collections of standard application software and Elastic Building Blocks (Ebbs). Elastic Building Blocks are components that encapsulate runtime software objects and are implemented to exploit the raw access, scale and elasticity of IaaS resources to accelerate critical application functionality.     A 64mW DNN-based Visual Navigation Engine for Autonomous Nano-Drones

    Fully-autonomous miniaturized robots (e.g., drones), with artificial intelligence (AI) based visual navigation capabilities are extremely challenging drivers of Internet-of-Things edge intelligence capabilities. Visual navigation based on AI approaches, such as deep neural networks (DNNs) are becoming pervasive for standard-size drones, but are considered out of reach for nanodrones with size of a few cm2{}^\mathrm{2}. In this work, we present the first (to the best of our knowledge) demonstration of a navigation engine for autonomous nano-drones capable of closed-loop end-to-end DNN-based visual navigation. To achieve this goal we developed a complete methodology for parallel execution of complex DNNs directly on-bard of resource-constrained milliwatt-scale nodes. Our system is based on GAP8, a novel parallel ultra-low-power computing platform, and a 27 g commercial, open-source CrazyFlie 2.0 nano-quadrotor. As part of our general methodology we discuss the software mapping techniques that enable the state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural network presented in [1] to be fully executed on-board within a strict 6 fps real-time constraint with no compromise in terms of flight results, while all processing is done with only 64 mW on average.
