A Parallel Algorithm Template for Updating Single-Source Shortest Paths in Large-Scale Dynamic Networks
The Single Source Shortest Path (SSSP) problem is a classic graph theory problem that arises frequently in various practical scenarios; hence, many parallel algorithms have been developed to solve it. However, these algorithms operate on static graphs, whereas many real-world problems are best modeled as dynamic networks, where the structure of the network changes with time. This gap between the dynamic graph modeling and the assumed static graph model in the conventional SSSP algorithms motivates this work. We present a novel parallel algorithmic framework for updating the SSSP in large-scale dynamic networks and implement it on the shared-memory and GPU platforms. The basic idea is to identify the portion of the network affected by the changes and update the information in a rooted tree data structure that stores the edges of the network that are most relevant to the analysis. Extensive experimental evaluations on real-world and synthetic networks demonstrate that our proposed parallel updating algorithm is scalable and, in most cases, requires significantly less execution time than the state-of-the-art recomputing-from-scratch algorithms
Route Planning in Transportation Networks
We survey recent advances in algorithms for route planning in transportation
networks. For road networks, we show that one can compute driving directions in
milliseconds or less even at continental scale. A variety of techniques provide
different trade-offs between preprocessing effort, space requirements, and
query time. Some algorithms can answer queries in a fraction of a microsecond,
while others can deal efficiently with real-time traffic. Journey planning on
public transportation systems, although conceptually similar, is a
significantly harder problem due to its inherent time-dependent and
multicriteria nature. Although exact algorithms are fast enough for interactive
queries on metropolitan transit systems, dealing with continent-sized instances
requires simplifications or heavy preprocessing. The multimodal route planning
problem, which seeks journeys combining schedule-based transportation (buses,
trains) with unrestricted modes (walking, driving), is even harder, relying on

Multi-population genetic algorithms with immigrants scheme for dynamic shortest path routing problems in mobile ad hoc networks
Copyright @ Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.The static shortest path (SP) problem has been well addressed using intelligent optimization techniques, e.g., artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms (GAs), particle swarm optimization, etc. However, with the advancement in wireless communications, more and more mobile wireless networks appear, e.g., mobile ad hoc network (MANET), wireless mesh network, etc. One of the most important characteristics in mobile wireless networks is the topology dynamics, that is, the network topology changes over time due to energy conservation or node mobility. Therefore, the SP problem turns out to be a dynamic optimization problem in mobile wireless networks. In this paper, we propose to use multi-population GAs with immigrants scheme to solve the dynamic SP problem in MANETs which is the representative of new generation wireless networks. Fully-dynamic Approximation of Betweenness Centrality
Betweenness is a well-known centrality measure that ranks the nodes of a
network according to their participation in shortest paths. Since an exact
computation is prohibitive in large networks, several approximation algorithms
have been proposed. Besides that, recent years have seen the publication of
dynamic algorithms for efficient recomputation of betweenness in evolving
networks. In previous work we proposed the first semi-dynamic algorithms that
recompute an approximation of betweenness in connected graphs after batches of
edge insertions.
In this paper we propose the first fully-dynamic approximation algorithms
(for weighted and unweighted undirected graphs that need not to be connected)
with a provable guarantee on the maximum approximation error. The transfer to
fully-dynamic and disconnected graphs implies additional algorithmic problems
that could be of independent interest. In particular, we propose a new upper
bound on the vertex diameter for weighted undirected graphs. For both weighted
and unweighted graphs, we also propose the first fully-dynamic algorithms that
keep track of such upper bound. In addition, we extend our former algorithm for
semi-dynamic BFS to batches of both edge insertions and deletions.
Using approximation, our algorithms are the first to make in-memory
computation of betweenness in fully-dynamic networks with millions of edges
feasible. Our experiments show that they can achieve substantial speedups
compared to recomputation, up to several orders of magnitude
JGraphT -- A Java library for graph data structures and algorithms
Mathematical software and graph-theoretical algorithmic packages to
efficiently model, analyze and query graphs are crucial in an era where
large-scale spatial, societal and economic network data are abundantly
available. One such package is JGraphT, a programming library which contains
very efficient and generic graph data-structures along with a large collection
of state-of-the-art algorithms. The library is written in Java with stability,
interoperability and performance in mind. A distinctive feature of this library
is the ability to model vertices and edges as arbitrary objects, thereby
permitting natural representations of many common networks including
transportation, social and biological networks. Besides classic graph
algorithms such as shortest-paths and spanning-tree algorithms, the library
contains numerous advanced algorithms: graph and subgraph isomorphism; matching
and flow problems; approximation algorithms for NP-hard problems such as
independent set and TSP; and several more exotic algorithms such as Berge graph
detection. Due to its versatility and generic design, JGraphT is currently used
in large-scale commercial, non-commercial and academic research projects. In
this work we describe in detail the design and underlying structure of the
library, and discuss its most important features and algorithms. A
computational study is conducted to evaluate the performance of JGraphT versus
a number of similar libraries. Experiments on a large number of graphs over a
variety of popular algorithms show that JGraphT is highly competitive with

Analysis of Performance of Dynamic Multicast Routing Algorithms
In this paper, three new dynamic multicast routing algorithms based on the
greedy tree technique are proposed; Source Optimised Tree, Topology Based Tree
and Minimum Diameter Tree. A simulation analysis is presented showing various
performance aspects of the algorithms, in which a comparison is made with the
greedy and core based tree techniques. The effects of the tree source location
on dynamic membership change are also examined. The simulations demonstrate
that the Source Optimised Tree algorithm achieves a significant improvement in
terms of delay and link usage when compared to the Core Based Tree, and greedy
algorithm
