Integration of sketch-based ideation and 3D modeling with CAD systems
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This thesis is concerned with the study of how sketch-based systems can be improved to enhance idea generation process in conceptual design stage. It is also concerned with achieving a kind of integration between sketch-based systems and CAD systems to complete the digitization of the design process as sketching phase is still not integrated with other phases due to the different nature of it and the incomplete digitization of sketching phase itself. Previous studies identified three main related issues: sketching process, sketch-based modeling, and the integration between the digitized design phases. Here, the thesis is motivated from the desire to improve sketch-based modeling to support idea generation process but unlike previous studies that only focused on the technical or drawing part of sketching, this thesis attempts to concentrate more on the mental part of the sketching process which play a key role in developing ideas in design. Another motivation of this thesis is to produce a kind of integration between sketch-based systems and CAD systems to enable 3D models produced by sketching to be edited in detailed design stage. As such, there are two main contributions have been addressed in this thesis. The first contribution is the presenting of a new approach in designing
sketch-based systems that enable more support for idea generation by separating thinking and developing ideas from the 3D modeling process. This kind of separation allows designers to think freely and concentrate more on their ideas rather than 3D modeling. the second contribution is achieving a kind of integration between gesture-based systems and CAD systems by using an IGES file in exchanging data between systems and a new method to organize data within the file in an order that make it more understood by feature recognition embedded in commercial CAD systems.This study is funded by the Ministry of Higher Education of Egypt
Building oriented surface generation through IGES specification
This thesis focuses the use of Initial Graphics Exchange Specification to generate automatically three dimensional surfaces. Currently, different CAD systems utilize their own data formats to generate graphic databases which are not compatible with one another. Besides, most of the existing CAD systems require an interactive data input process which is very much time consuming. In order to solve above problems, an efficient algorithm has been developed in this research to automatically generate portable graphic database following ICES specifications. This portable graphic database can be adopted by different commercial CAD/CAM systems. Using the proposed method, the current design process can be upgraded from the interactive data input method to automatic modelling method that accelerates design process in surface generation significantly. The main objectives of this research are: (1) curtail the surface generation time, (2) reduce the memory space for data storage and communication. A user-friendly program has been written in FORTRAN 77 to apply the proposed algorithm. A case study illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed method
Structured grid generation for gas turbine combustion systems
Commercial pressures to reduce time-scales encourage innovation in the design and
analysis cycle of gas turbine combustion systems. The migration of Computational
Fluid Dynamics (CFD) from the purview of the specialist into a routine analysis tool is
crucial to achieve these reductions and forms the focus of this research. Two significant
challenges were identified: reducing the time-scale for creating and solving a CFD prediction
and reducing the level of expertise required to perform a prediction.
The commercial pressure for the rapid production of CFD predictions, coupled with the
desire to reduce the risk associated with adopting a new technology led, following a
review of available techniques, to the identification of structured grids as the current
optimum methodology.
It was decided that the task of geometry definition would be entirely performed within
commercial Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems. A critical success factor for this
research was the adoption of solid models for the geometry representation. Solids
ensure consistency, and accuracy, whilst eliminating the need for the designer to undertake
difficult, and time consuming, geometry repair operations. The versatility of parametric
CAD systems were investigated on the complex geometry of a combustion system and found to be useful in reducing the overhead in altering the geometry for a
CFD prediction. Accurate and robust transfer between CAD and CFD systems was
achieved by the use of direct translators.
Restricting the geometry definition to solid models allowed a novel two stage grid generator
to be developed. In stage one an initial algebraic grid is created. This reduces
user interaction to a minimum, by the employment of a series of logical rules based on
the solid model to fill in any missing grid boundary condition data. In stage two the
quality of the grid is improved by redistributing nodes using elliptical partial differential
equations. A unique approach of improving grid quality by simultaneously smoothing
both internal and surface grids was implemented. The smoothing operation was
responsible for quality, and therefore reduced the level of grid generation expertise
required.
The successful validation of this research was demonstrated using several test cases
including a CFD prediction of a complete combustion system
Geometric data transfer between CAD systems: solid models
The CAD/CAM community is showing great interest in the development of data exchange standards. This article highlights some aspects of the work accomplished during the first phase of the ESPRIT project CAD*1. Part of this work has resulted in a specification for the exchange of solid models, as well as in some pilot implementations of processors based on this specification. This work also contributes to the efforts of the International Standards Organization (ISO) in developing the Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP). The authors present a summary of the CAD*1 approach, addressing the structure of neutral files for solids, entities, and attributes supporting three kinds of representations, facilities for the transfer of parametric designs, referencing library components, and other general mechanisms. Also is described the current state of the specification and processor implementations. An example of a CAD*1 neutral file is included. Results from cycle and intersystem solid model transfer tests are presented, showing the practicality of the CAD*1 proposal. B-rep model transfer results are discussed in some detail. Pembangunan Modul Pengajaran Kendiri (MPK) keusahawanan dalam topik isu keusahawanan bagi pelajar diploma di politeknik
Terdapat pelbagai kaedah pembelajaran yang telah diperkenalkan termasuklah
kaedah pembelajaran yang menggunakan pendekatan pembelajaran bermodul secara
kendiri. Kajian ini adalah bertujuan untuk mengkaji kesesuaian Modul Pengajaran
Kendiri Keusahawanan dalam topik Isu Keusahawanan yang telah dihasilkan bagi
pelajar yang mengikuti pengajian Diploma di Jabatan Perdagangan Politeknik. Antara
aspek yang dikaji ialah untuk menilai sama ada rekabentuk modul yang dihasilkan dapat
memenuhi ciri-ciri modul yang baik, MPK yang dihasilkan dapat membantu mencapai
objektif pembelajaran, MPK ini bersifat mesra pengguna dan MPK yang dihasilkan
membantu pensyarah menyampaikan pengajarannya dengan lebih berkesan. Kajian ini
dilakukan ke atas 110 orang pelajar semester en am yang mengikuti pengajian diploma
dan 4 orang pensyarah yang mengajar subjek Keusahawanan di Jabatan Perdagangan
Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Selangor. Kaedah analisa data yang
digunakan dalam kajian ini ialah skor min dan peratus. Hasil daripada kajian ini
menunjukkan bahawa rekabentuk modul yang dihasilkan memenuhi ciri-ciri modul
yang baik, MPK ini membantu untuk mencapai objektif pembelajaran, MPK ini
bersifat mesra pengguna dan MPK yang dihasilkan dapat membantu pensyarah
menyampaikan pengajarannya dengan lebih berkesan. Ini bermakna secara
keseluruhannya, hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa modul yang dihasilkan oleh pengkaji
adalah sesuai digunakan oleh pelajar-pelajar semester enam yang mengikuti pengajian
diploma di Jabatan Perdagangan peringkat politeknik. Seterusnya, beberapa pandangan
telah dikemukakan bagi meningkatkan rnutu dan kualiti MPK yang dihasilkan. Semoga
kajian ini dapat memberi manfaat kepada mereka yang terlibat dalam bidang
pendidikan
System integration report
Several areas that arise from the system integration issue were examined. Intersystem analysis is discussed as it relates to software development, shared data bases and interfaces between TEMPUS and PLAID, shaded graphics rendering systems, object design (BUILD), the TEMPUS animation system, anthropometric lab integration, ongoing TEMPUS support and maintenance, and the impact of UNIX and local workstations on the OSDS environment
GIS data exchange problems, solutions
The present situation in Hungary in the field of GIS data exchange
is introduced in this paper. Most of the data exchanges
concentrate on map data (graphical data) without attributes.
The new Hungarian standard DAT1 (MSz 7772-1) has changed the
situation. It involves map, topology and attribute data as well
and is the official data exchange format for Land Offices. The new
standard probably effects most of the GIS community as the
existing digital maps should be converted to DAT1 data exchange
format. A solution is given in this paper. Finally the demand of a
more general data exchange format is discussed
