A Static Optimality Transformation with Applications to Planar Point Location
Over the last decade, there have been several data structures that, given a
planar subdivision and a probability distribution over the plane, provide a way
for answering point location queries that is fine-tuned for the distribution.
All these methods suffer from the requirement that the query distribution must
be known in advance.
We present a new data structure for point location queries in planar
triangulations. Our structure is asymptotically as fast as the optimal
structures, but it requires no prior information about the queries. This is a
2D analogue of the jump from Knuth's optimum binary search trees (discovered in
1971) to the splay trees of Sleator and Tarjan in 1985. While the former need
to know the query distribution, the latter are statically optimal. This means
that we can adapt to the query sequence and achieve the same asymptotic
performance as an optimum static structure, without needing any additional

Distance-Sensitive Planar Point Location
Let be a connected planar polygonal subdivision with edges
that we want to preprocess for point-location queries, and where we are given
the probability that the query point lies in a polygon of

Solving a "Hard" Problem to Approximate an "Easy" One: Heuristics for Maximum Matchings and Maximum Traveling Salesman Problems
We consider geometric instances of the Maximum Weighted Matching Problem
(MWMP) and the Maximum Traveling Salesman Problem (MTSP) with up to 3,000,000
vertices. Making use of a geometric duality relationship between MWMP, MTSP,
and the Fermat-Weber-Problem (FWP), we develop a heuristic approach that yields
in near-linear time solutions as well as upper bounds. Using various
computational tools, we get solutions within considerably less than 1% of the
optimum.
An interesting feature of our approach is that, even though an FWP is hard to
compute in theory and Edmonds' algorithm for maximum weighted matching yields a
polynomial solution for the MWMP, the practical behavior is just the opposite,
and we can solve the FWP with high accuracy in order to find a good heuristic

Reverse Nearest Neighbor Heat Maps: A Tool for Influence Exploration
We study the problem of constructing a reverse nearest neighbor (RNN) heat
map by finding the RNN set of every point in a two-dimensional space. Based on
the RNN set of a point, we obtain a quantitative influence (i.e., heat) for the
point. The heat map provides a global view on the influence distribution in the
space, and hence supports exploratory analyses in many applications such as
marketing and resource management. To construct such a heat map, we first
reduce it to a problem called Region Coloring (RC), which divides the space
into disjoint regions within which all the points have the same RNN set. We
then propose a novel algorithm named CREST that efficiently solves the RC
problem by labeling each region with the heat value of its containing points.
In CREST, we propose innovative techniques to avoid processing expensive RNN
queries and greatly reduce the number of region labeling operations. We perform
detailed analyses on the complexity of CREST and lower bounds of the RC
problem, and prove that CREST is asymptotically optimal in the worst case.
Extensive experiments with both real and synthetic data sets demonstrate that
CREST outperforms alternative algorithms by several orders of magnitude.Comment: Accepted to appear in ICDE 201
Holography of Little Inflation
For several crucial microseconds of its early history, the Universe consisted
of a Quark-Gluon Plasma. As it cooled during this era, it traced out a
trajectory in the quark matter phase diagram. The form taken by this trajectory
is not known with certainty, but is of great importance: it determines, for
example, whether the cosmic plasma passed through a first-order phase change
during the transition to the hadron era, as has recently been suggested by
advocates of the "Little Inflation" model. Just before this transition, the
plasma was strongly coupled and therefore can be studied by holographic
techniques. We show that holography imposes a strong constraint (taking the
form of a bound on the baryonic chemical potential relative to the temperature)
on the domain through which the cosmic plasma could pass as it cooled, with
important consequences for Little Inflation. In fact, we find that holography
applied to Little Inflation implies that the cosmic plasma must have passed
quite close to the quark matter critical point, and might therefore have been
