Taming Numbers and Durations in the Model Checking Integrated Planning System
The Model Checking Integrated Planning System (MIPS) is a temporal least
commitment heuristic search planner based on a flexible object-oriented
workbench architecture. Its design clearly separates explicit and symbolic
directed exploration algorithms from the set of on-line and off-line computed
estimates and associated data structures. MIPS has shown distinguished
performance in the last two international planning competitions. In the last
event the description language was extended from pure propositional planning to
include numerical state variables, action durations, and plan quality objective
functions. Plans were no longer sequences of actions but time-stamped
schedules. As a participant of the fully automated track of the competition,
MIPS has proven to be a general system; in each track and every benchmark
domain it efficiently computed plans of remarkable quality. This article
introduces and analyzes the most important algorithmic novelties that were
necessary to tackle the new layers of expressiveness in the benchmark problems
and to achieve a high level of performance. The extensions include critical
path analysis of sequentially generated plans to generate corresponding optimal
parallel plans. The linear time algorithm to compute the parallel plan bypasses
known NP hardness results for partial ordering by scheduling plans with respect
to the set of actions and the imposed precedence relations. The efficiency of
this algorithm also allows us to improve the exploration guidance: for each
encountered planning state the corresponding approximate sequential plan is
scheduled. One major strength of MIPS is its static analysis phase that grounds
and simplifies parameterized predicates, functions and operators, that infers
knowledge to minimize the state description length, and that detects domain
object symmetries. The latter aspect is analyzed in detail. MIPS has been
developed to serve as a complete and optimal state space planner, with
admissible estimates, exploration engines and branching cuts. In the
competition version, however, certain performance compromises had to be made,
including floating point arithmetic, weighted heuristic search exploration
according to an inadmissible estimate and parameterized optimization

QuASeR -- Quantum Accelerated De Novo DNA Sequence Reconstruction
In this article, we present QuASeR, a reference-free DNA sequence
reconstruction implementation via de novo assembly on both gate-based and
quantum annealing platforms. Each one of the four steps of the implementation
(TSP, QUBO, Hamiltonians and QAOA) is explained with simple proof-of-concept
examples to target both the genomics research community and quantum application
developers in a self-contained manner. The details of the implementation are
discussed for the various layers of the quantum full-stack accelerator design.
We also highlight the limitations of current classical simulation and available
quantum hardware systems. The implementation is open-source and can be found on

Brain architecture: A design for natural computation
Fifty years ago, John von Neumann compared the architecture of the brain with
that of computers that he invented and which is still in use today. In those
days, the organisation of computers was based on concepts of brain
organisation. Here, we give an update on current results on the global
organisation of neural systems. For neural systems, we outline how the spatial
and topological architecture of neuronal and cortical networks facilitates
robustness against failures, fast processing, and balanced network activation.
Finally, we discuss mechanisms of self-organization for such architectures.

ToyArchitecture: Unsupervised Learning of Interpretable Models of the World
Research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has focused mostly on two extremes:
either on small improvements in narrow AI domains, or on universal theoretical
frameworks which are usually uncomputable, incompatible with theories of
biological intelligence, or lack practical implementations. The goal of this
work is to combine the main advantages of the two: to follow a big picture
view, while providing a particular theory and its implementation. In contrast
with purely theoretical approaches, the resulting architecture should be usable
in realistic settings, but also form the core of a framework containing all the
basic mechanisms, into which it should be easier to integrate additional
required functionality.
In this paper, we present a novel, purposely simple, and interpretable
hierarchical architecture which combines multiple different mechanisms into one
system: unsupervised learning of a model of the world, learning the influence
of one's own actions on the world, model-based reinforcement learning,
hierarchical planning and plan execution, and symbolic/sub-symbolic integration
in general. The learned model is stored in the form of hierarchical
representations with the following properties: 1) they are increasingly more
abstract, but can retain details when needed, and 2) they are easy to
manipulate in their local and symbolic-like form, thus also allowing one to
observe the learning process at each level of abstraction. On all levels of the
system, the representation of the data can be interpreted in both a symbolic
and a sub-symbolic manner. This enables the architecture to learn efficiently

The Dynamic Multi-objective Multi-vehicle Covering Tour Problem
This work introduces a new routing problem called the Dynamic Multi-Objective Multi-vehicle Covering Tour Problem (DMOMCTP). The DMOMCTPs is a combinatorial optimization problem that represents the problem of routing multiple vehicles to survey an area in which unpredictable target nodes may appear during execution. The formulation includes multiple objectives that include minimizing the cost of the combined tour cost, minimizing the longest tour cost, minimizing the distance to nodes to be covered and maximizing the distance to hazardous nodes. This study adapts several existing algorithms to the problem with several operator and solution encoding variations. The efficacy of this set of solvers is measured against six problem instances created from existing Traveling Salesman Problem instances which represent several real countries. The results indicate that repair operators, variable length solution encodings and variable-length operators obtain a better approximation of the true Pareto front
A NATURALISTIC COMPUTATIONAL MODEL OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN NAVIGATION AND SEARCH TASKS
Planning, navigation, and search are fundamental human cognitive abilities central to spatial problem solving in search and rescue, law enforcement, and military operations. Despite a wealth of literature concerning naturalistic spatial problem solving in animals, literature on naturalistic spatial problem solving in humans is comparatively lacking and generally conducted by separate camps among which there is little crosstalk. Addressing this deficiency will allow us to predict spatial decision making in operational environments, and understand the factors leading to those decisions. The present dissertation is comprised of two related efforts, (1) a set of empirical research studies intended to identify characteristics of planning, execution, and memory in naturalistic spatial problem solving tasks, and (2) a computational modeling effort to develop a model of naturalistic spatial problem solving. The results of the behavioral studies indicate that problem space hierarchical representations are linear in shape, and that human solutions are produced according to multiple optimization criteria. The Mixed Criteria Model presented in this dissertation accounts for global and local human performance in a traditional and naturalistic Traveling Salesman Problem. The results of the empirical and modeling efforts hold implications for basic and applied science in domains such as problem solving, operations research, human-computer interaction, and artificial intelligence
T2HSOM: Understanding the Lexicon by Simulating Memory Processes for Serial Order
Over the last several years, both theoretical and empirical approaches to lexical knowledge and encoding have prompted a radical reappraisal of the traditional dichotomy between lexicon and grammar. The lexicon is not simply a large waste basket of exceptions and sub-regularities, but a dynamic, possibly redundant repository of linguistic knowledge whose principles of relational organization are the driving force of productive generalizations. In this paper, we overview a few models of dynamic lexical organization based on neural network architectures that are purported to meet this challenging view. In particular, we illustrate a novel family of Kohonen self-organizing maps (T2HSOMs) that have the potential of simulating competitive storage of symbolic time series while exhibiting interesting properties of morphological organization and generalization. The model, tested on training samples of as morphologically diverse languages as Italian, German and Arabic, shows sensitivity to manifold types of morphological structure and can be used to bootstrap morphological knowledge in an unsupervised way
