    A Literature review on Balancing Workload in Cloud Computing

    Cloud computing is the realistic evolution of information technology in a world that is learning to be more and more based on the division of work. Cloud computing offers many principles that are long accomplished in other industries to the IT. We focus on basic characteristics of cloud computing help you understand them. A pattern language is used to interconnecting set of cloud patterns. A cloud pattern is a small human readable document of a well-defined format describing a good solution to a cloud related problem. We studied and captured such patterns describing different types of clouds, the offerings they provide and how to build application with them. In this paper we mainly focus on different types of application workload patterns. Pattern for application workloads describe different user behavior resulting in changing utilization of IT resources hosting an application. Having motivated the need for cloud offerings to handle different workloads we introduce common cloud service models that describe different styles to offer IT resources on different levels of an application stack. Furthermore we also discuss how the corresponding service models and cloud deployment models enable the cloud computing properties

    The role of binaries in the enrichment of the early Galactic halo. I. r-process-enhanced metal-poor stars

    The detailed chemical composition of most metal-poor halo stars has been found to be highly uniform, but a minority of stars exhibit dramatic enhancements in their abundances of heavy neutron-capture elements and/or of carbon. The key question for Galactic chemical evolution models is whether these peculiarities reflect the composition of the natal clouds, or if they are due to later mass transfer of processed material from a binary companion. If the former case applies, the observed excess of certain elements was implanted within selected clouds in the early ISM from a production site at interstellar distances. Our aim is to determine the frequency and orbital properties of binaries among these chemically peculiar stars. This information provides the basis for deciding whether mass transfer from a binary companion is necessary and sufficient to explain their unusual compositions. This paper discusses our study of a sample of 17 moderately (r-I) and highly (r-II) r-process-element enhanced VMP and EMP stars. High-resolution, low signal-to-noise spectra of the stars were obtained at roughly monthly intervals over 8 years with the FIES spectrograph at the Nordic Optical Telescope. From these spectra, radial velocities with an accuracy of ~100 m/s were determined by cross-correlation against an optimized template. 14 of the programme stars exhibit no significant RV variation over this period, while 3 are binaries with orbits of typical eccentricity for their periods, resulting in a normal binary frequency of ~18+-6% for the sample. Our results confirm our preliminary conclusion from 2011, based on partial data, that the chemical peculiarity of the r-I and r-II stars is not caused by any putative binary companions. Instead, it was imprinted on the natal molecular clouds of these stars by an external, distant source.     The effect of rotor design on the fluid dynamics of helicopter brownout

    Helicopters operating close to the ground in dusty environments tend to generate large clouds of dust in the surrounding air. These clouds can obscure the pilot's view of the ground and lead to a dangerous condition known as brownout. Given the intimate relationship between the induced flow feld around the rotor and the process through which the particulate matter becomes airborne and is subsequently transported, it has been speculated that the design of its rotor may influence the shape and size of the dust clouds that are produced by any particular type of helicopter. This paper presents a study of the influence of two key geometric properties of the rotor on the development of these dust clouds. A particle transport model is coupled to Brown's Vorticity Transport Model to represent the dynamics of the particulate-air system surrounding a generic helicopter rotor under various flight conditions. The number of blades on the rotor is altered, whilst keeping the solidity constant, thus altering the distribution of vorticity that is released onto the ground. In addition, the twist of the blades is varied in order to investigate the effect of the resultant changes in the distribution of induced downwash on the evolution of the dust cloud. The study suggests that, in general, the larger the number of blades, and the higher the blade twist, the less dense the dust clouds that are produced under brownout conditions. It appears thus that the characteristics of the dust clouds are indeed sensitive to the geometry of the rotor and hence that careful aerodynamic design may allow the severity of brownout to be ameliorated

    The Magellanic System: What have we learnt from FUSE?

    I review some of the findings on the Magellanic System produced by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) during and after its eight years of service. The Magellanic System with its high-velocity complexes provides a nearby laboratory that can be used to characterize phenomena that involve interaction between galaxies, infall and outflow of gas and metals in galaxies. These processes are crucial for understanding the evolution of galaxies and the intergalactic medium. Among the FUSE successes I highlight are the coronal gas about the LMC and SMC, and beyond in the Stream, the outflows from these galaxies, the discovery of molecules in the diffuse gas of the Stream and the Bridge, an extremely sub-solar and sub-SMC metallicity of the Bridge, and a high-velocity complex between the Milky Way and the Clouds.Comment: A contributed paper to the FUSE Annapolis Conference "Future Directions in Ultraviolet Spectroscopy.", 5 pages.     Towards Hybrid Cloud-assisted Crowdsourced Live Streaming: Measurement and Analysis

    Crowdsourced Live Streaming (CLS), most notably Twitch.tv, has seen explosive growth in its popularity in the past few years. In such systems, any user can lively broadcast video content of interest to others, e.g., from a game player to many online viewers. To fulfill the demands from both massive and heterogeneous broadcasters and viewers, expensive server clusters have been deployed to provide video ingesting and transcoding services. Despite the existence of highly popular channels, a significant portion of the channels is indeed unpopular. Yet as our measurement shows, these broadcasters are consuming considerable system resources; in particular, 25% (resp. 30%) of bandwidth (resp. computation) resources are used by the broadcasters who do not have any viewers at all. In this paper, we closely examine the challenge of handling unpopular live-broadcasting channels in CLS systems and present a comprehensive solution for service partitioning on hybrid cloud. The trace-driven evaluation shows that our hybrid cloud-assisted design can smartly assign ingesting and transcoding tasks to the elastic cloud virtual machines, providing flexible system deployment cost-effectively

    Helicopter brownout - can it be modelled?

    Significant progress has been made to date in modelling, computationally, the formation and development of the dust cloud that forms in the air surrounding the rotorcraft under brownout conditions. Modern computational methods are able to replicate not only the development of the dust cloud in appropriate operational scenarios, but also the sensitivity of the shape and density of the dust cloud to the detailed design of the rotorcraft. Results so far suggest that attempts to ameliorate brownout by aerodynamic means, for instance by modifying the rotor properties, will be frustrated to some extent by the inherent instability of the °flow field that is produced by the helicopter. Nonetheless, very recent advances in understanding the fundamental mechanisms that lead to the formation of the dust cloud may allow substantial progress to be made once certain elements of the basic physics of the problem are more fully understood and better quantified
