This paper aims to evaluate performance of property and real estate companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. Samples were 23 companies listed from 2009 to 2012.. However, only one company that consistently having technical efficiency equal 1. The main cause of inefficiency from 2009-2011 was scale inefficiency while inefficiency happened in 2012 was pure technical efficiency. Overall the companies operate efficiently under constant returns to scale is showing an increase from 17.39-39.1

Operations capability, productivity and business performance: the moderating effect of environmental dynamism

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between operations capability, productivity and business performance in the context of environmental dynamism. Design/methodology/approach – A proposed conceptual framework grounded in the resourcebased view (RBV) and dynamic capability view (DCV) is analysed using archival data from 193 automakers in the UK. Findings – The results show that operations capability, as an important dynamic capability, has a significant positive effect on productivity, which in turn leads to improved business performance. The results also suggest that productivity fully mediates the relationship between operations capability and business performance, and that environmental dynamism significantly moderates the relationship between operations capability and productivity. Practical implications – The research findings provide practical insights that will help managers develop operations capability to gain greater productivity and business performance in a dynamic environment

Consumer perceptions towards sustainable supply chain practices in the hospitality industry

This study investigates the impacts of economic, social and environmental sustainability practices of companies in the hospitality supply chain on consumers’ satisfaction, loyalty and willingness to pay higher prices. Utilizing data collected from 288 tourists visiting south Sardinia, the study indicates that while economic sustainability practices have positive impacts on consumers’ satisfaction, loyalty and willingness to pay a premium, sustainability practices related to environmental and social dimensions have a direct positive impact on satisfaction and an indirect positive impact on consumer loyalty and willingness to pay a premium. Additionally, findings reveal that satisfaction is likely to mediate the impact of environmental and social sustainability practices on the loyalty of consumers. The theoretical and managerial implications of the study are provided

Multi-Unit Efficiency Assessment and Multidimensional Polygon Analysis in a Small, Full-Service Restaurant Chain

Purpose: Restaurant revenue management practices and profit optimization techniques are evolving into more complex data analysis processes. The “big data” revolution has created a wealth of information on revenue, pricing, key operational performance indicators, and various productivity/efficiency variables. Advanced research analysis that can identify these key factors across multiple operating units may be useful to restaurant managers unaccustomed to data analytics or those seeking a deeper understanding of unit-level business performance. The overarching goal of this study was to utilize mixed research methods across conceptually dissimilar units of a multi-unit chain restaurant, enabling researchers to build on the resulting outcomes and restaurant operators to apply it to optimize unit-to-unit profit. Design/Methodology: A mixed research methodology was used to evaluate multidimensional operating efficiencies and labor productivity across multiple restaurant concepts. Data envelopment analysis (DEA), between-unit multidimensional analysis, and within-unit ratio analyses were utilized. While DEA was applied as a primary diagnostic tool to identify productivity/efficiency benchmarking factors, supplemental between- and within-unit measures provided more in-depth information regarding the effects of operating expense variables. Findings: Restaurant analytics that effectively measure input and output variables between and within multiple units promote a data-rich organizational culture. For the small multi-unit organization that was the focus of this study, this is certainly the case. DEA diagnostic results to inform targeted analysis to particular units of operation indicated that all units are operating at maximum efficiency in terms of generating sales given the respective numbers of seats and square footages. However, subsequent analyses indicated multiple problems in terms of expense management. This same approach may help other operators optimize operations. Originality/value: The proposed model provides restaurant operators the opportunity to identify the impact of different operating expense variables and their impact on overall profitability. The use of the polygon analysis in itself makes complex sensitivity analysis of certain operating variables to profit outcomes a much easier process. We recommend other operators perform similar analyses in order to enhance operational productivity

Relative Efficiency And Quality Of Global Automobile Companies

    Get PDF
We investigate global automobile companies to determine whether quality and productivity are associated with profitability and increased market share. From multiple tests, evidence suggests that 1) the firms fall into three groups:  Toyota and Honda excel in all categories and are in the high performing group; Audi, GM, Mazda, BMW, and Nissan are in a moderate performing group while Daimler/Chrysler, Ford, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen are in a relatively low performing group; 2) that firms with high (low) quality, on average, have higher (lower) profitability and higher (lower) increases in market share for the sample period.  Implications for managers of manufacturing firms with a consumer market presence is that firms that pursue product quality and value to their customers should benefit by improved financial performance.&nbsp

The Impact of Strategic Orientation on Intellectual Capital Investments in Customer Service Firms

This study examines the influence of intellectual capital on performance in customer service firms pursuing different strategic orientations (e.g., low-cost leader, differentiation). Grounding these arguments in the resource-based view and using 538 hotels in the lodging industry, this article employs an economic-based production model to empirically explore the performance effects of investing in three different types of intellectual capital: systems capital (operational knowledge), customer capital (brand and marketing knowledge), and human capital (knowledge from both service and professional employees). In addition, the authors account for key controls, including the physical asset, cost of living, customer demand, market segment, and company affiliation. Results reveal that for firms pursuing a differentiation strategy only, investments in both service employees and professional employees enhance performance. However, investments in systems capital and customer capital enhance performance for all the firms studied. The authors discuss the implications of this study for research in the services arena
