Memetic: from meeting memory to virtual ethnography & distributed video analysis
The JISC-funded Memetic2 project was designed as knowledge management and project memory support for teams meeting via the Access Grid environment (Buckingham Shum et al, 2006). This paper describes how these capabilities also enable it to serve as a novel distributed video analysis tool to support interaction analysis. Memetic technologies can be used to record, annotate and discuss sessions recorded within a flexible, visual hypermedia environment called Compendium. We propose that beyond the use originally conceived, the Memetic toolset could find wide ranging applications within social science for virtual ethnography and data analysis
TimeMachine: Timeline Generation for Knowledge-Base Entities
We present a method called TIMEMACHINE to generate a timeline of events and
relations for entities in a knowledge base. For example for an actor, such a
timeline should show the most important professional and personal milestones
and relationships such as works, awards, collaborations, and family
relationships. We develop three orthogonal timeline quality criteria that an
ideal timeline should satisfy: (1) it shows events that are relevant to the
entity; (2) it shows events that are temporally diverse, so they distribute
along the time axis, avoiding visual crowding and allowing for easy user
interaction, such as zooming in and out; and (3) it shows events that are
content diverse, so they contain many different types of events (e.g., for an
actor, it should show movies and marriages and awards, not just movies). We
present an algorithm to generate such timelines for a given time period and
screen size, based on submodular optimization and web-co-occurrence statistics
with provable performance guarantees. A series of user studies using Mechanical
Turk shows that all three quality criteria are crucial to produce quality
timelines and that our algorithm significantly outperforms various baseline and

Understanding the Roots of Radicalisation on Twitter
In an increasingly digital world, identifying signs of online extremism sits at the top of the priority list for counter-extremist agencies. Researchers and governments are investing in the creation of advanced information technologies to identify and counter extremism through intelligent large-scale analysis of online data. However, to the best of our knowledge, these technologies are neither based on, nor do they take advantage of, the existing theories and studies of radicalisation. In this paper we propose a computational approach for detecting and predicting the radicalisation influence a user is exposed to, grounded on the notion of ’roots of radicalisation’ from social science models. This approach has been applied to analyse and compare the radicalisation level of 112 pro-ISIS vs.112 “general" Twitter users. Our results show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms in detecting and predicting radicalisation influence, obtaining up to 0.9 F-1 measure for detection and between 0.7 and 0.8 precision for prediction. While this is an initial attempt towards the effective combination of social and computational perspectives, more work is needed to bridge these disciplines, and to build on their strengths to target the problem of online radicalisation
A geo-temporal information extraction service for processing descriptive metadata in digital libraries
In the context of digital map libraries, resources are usually described according to metadata records that define the relevant subject, location, time-span, format and keywords. On what concerns locations and time-spans, metadata records are often incomplete or they provide information in a way that is not machine-understandable (e.g. textual descriptions). This paper presents techniques for extracting geotemporal information from text, using relatively simple text mining methods that leverage on a Web gazetteer service. The idea is to go from human-made geotemporal referencing (i.e. using place and period names in textual expressions) into geo-spatial coordinates and time-spans. A prototype system, implementing the proposed methods, is described in detail. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approaches
Investigating Rumor Propagation with TwitterTrails
Social media have become part of modern news reporting, used by journalists
to spread information and find sources, or as a news source by individuals. The
quest for prominence and recognition on social media sites like Twitter can
sometimes eclipse accuracy and lead to the spread of false information. As a
way to study and react to this trend, we introduce {\sc TwitterTrails}, an
interactive, web-based tool ({\tt twittertrails.com}) that allows users to
investigate the origin and propagation characteristics of a rumor and its
refutation, if any, on Twitter. Visualizations of burst activity, propagation
timeline, retweet and co-retweeted networks help its users trace the spread of
a story. Within minutes {\sc TwitterTrails} will collect relevant tweets and
automatically answer several important questions regarding a rumor: its
originator, burst characteristics, propagators and main actors according to the
audience. In addition, it will compute and report the rumor's level of
visibility and, as an example of the power of crowdsourcing, the audience's
skepticism towards it which correlates with the rumor's credibility. We
envision {\sc TwitterTrails} as valuable tool for individual use, but we
especially for amateur and professional journalists investigating recent and

This volume contains the proceedings of the 1st Workshop on Computing News Storylines (CNewsStory
2015) held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational
Linguistics and the 7th International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing (ACL-IJCNLP
2015) at the China National Convention Center in Beijing, on July 31st 2015.
Narratives are at the heart of information sharing. Ever since people began to share their experiences,
they have connected them to form narratives. The study od storytelling and the field of literary theory
called narratology have developed complex frameworks and models related to various aspects of
narrative such as plots structures, narrative embeddings, characters’ perspectives, reader response, point
of view, narrative voice, narrative goals, and many others. These notions from narratology have been
applied mainly in Artificial Intelligence and to model formal semantic approaches to narratives (e.g.
Plot Units developed by Lehnert (1981)). In recent years, computational narratology has qualified as an
autonomous field of study and research. Narrative has been the focus of a number of workshops and
conferences (AAAI Symposia, Interactive Storytelling Conference (ICIDS), Computational Models of
Narrative). Furthermore, reference annotation schemes for narratives have been proposed (NarrativeML
by Mani (2013)).
The workshop aimed at bringing together researchers from different communities working on
representing and extracting narrative structures in news, a text genre which is highly used in NLP
but which has received little attention with respect to narrative structure, representation and analysis.
Currently, advances in NLP technology have made it feasible to look beyond scenario-driven, atomic
extraction of events from single documents and work towards extracting story structures from multiple
documents, while these documents are published over time as news streams. Policy makers, NGOs,
information specialists (such as journalists and librarians) and others are increasingly in need of tools
that support them in finding salient stories in large amounts of information to more effectively implement
policies, monitor actions of “big players” in the society and check facts. Their tasks often revolve around
reconstructing cases either with respect to specific entities (e.g. person or organizations) or events (e.g.
hurricane Katrina). Storylines represent explanatory schemas that enable us to make better selections
of relevant information but also projections to the future. They form a valuable potential for exploiting

The Development of a Temporal Information Dictionary for Social Media Analytics
Dictionaries have been used to analyze text even before the emergence of social media and the use of dictionaries for sentiment analysis there. While dictionaries have been used to understand the tonality of text, so far it has not been possible to automatically detect if the tonality refers to the present, past, or future. In this research, we develop a dictionary containing time-indicating words in a wordlist (T-wordlist). To test how the dictionary performs, we apply our T-wordlist on different disaster related social media datasets. Subsequently we will validate the wordlist and results by a manual content analysis. So far, in this research-in-progress, we were able to develop a first dictionary and will also provide some initial insight into the performance of our wordlist
