    Estimation of optimal machining control parameters using artificial bee colony

    Modern machining processes such as abrasive waterjet (AWJ) are widely used in manufacturing industries nowadays. Optimizing the machining control parameters are essential in order to provide a better quality and economics machining. It was reported by previous researches that artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm has less computation time requirement and offered optimal solution due to its excellent global and local search capability compared to the other optimization soft computing techniques. This research employed ABC algorithm to optimize the machining control parameters that lead to a minimum surface roughness (Ra) value for AWJ machining. Five machining control parameters that are optimized using ABC algorithm include traverse speed (V), waterjet pressure (P), standoff distance (h), abrasive grit size (d) and abrasive flow rate (m). From the experimental results, the performance of ABC was much superior where the estimated minimum Ra value was 28, 42, 45, 2 and 0.9 % lower compared to actual machining, regression, artificial neural network (ANN), genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA) respectively

    A hybrid approach of anfis—artificial bee colony algorithm for intelligent modeling and optimization of plasma arc cutting on monelℱ 400 alloy

    This paper focusses on a hybrid approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) and an adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for modeling the correlation between plasma arc cutting (PAC) parameters and the response characteristics of machined Monel 400 alloy sheets. PAC experiments are performed based on box-behnken design methodology by considering cutting speed, gas pressure, arc current, and stand-off distance as input parameters, and surface roughness (Ra), kerf width (kw), and micro hardness (mh) as response characteristics. GA is efficaciously utilized as the training algorithm to optimize the ANFIS parameters. The training, testing errors, and statistical validation parameter results indicated that the ANFIS learned by GA outperforms in the forecasting of PAC responses compared with the results of multiple linear regression models. Besides that, to obtain the optimal combination PAC parameters, multi-response optimization was performed using a trained ANFIS network coupled with an artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC). The superlative responses, such as Ra of 1.5387 ”m, kw of 1.2034 mm, and mh of 176.08, are used to forecast the optimum cutting conditions, such as a cutting speed of 2330.39 mm/min, gas pressure of 3.84 bar, arc current of 45 A, and stand-off distance of 2.01 mm, respectively. Furthermore, the ABC predicted results are validated by conducting confirmatory experiments, and it was found that the error between the predicted and the actual results are lower than 6.38%, indicating the adoptability of the proposed ABC in optimizing real-world complex machining processes

    Abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) is extensively beneficial in machining materials that are hard to cut. This investigation deals with AWJM of Nano SiC filled Epoxy reinforced with basalt-glass fiber hybrid composite. The composite is prepared by compression moulding technique. Experimental trails are performed to evaluate the impact of every process parameter on the responses i.e., surface roughness (Ra) and Material Removal Rate (MRR). The experiments are conducted by changing the standoff distance (SD), traverse speed (TS) and water pressure. The performance of the conducted experiment is analysed using a Swarm intelligence algorithm. Surface roughness and MRR are maximized by using the combination of optimum process parameter levels of 9.72 mm/min speed, 5.78 mm stand-off distance and 553 MPa jet pressure.     Automatic Threshold Selections by exploration and exploitation of optimization algorithm in Record Deduplication

    A deduplication process uses similarity function to identify the two entries are duplicate or not by setting the threshold.  This threshold setting is an important issue to achieve more accuracy and it relies more on human intervention. Swarm Intelligence algorithm such as PSO and ABC have been used for automatic detection of threshold to find the duplicate records. Though the algorithms performed well there is still an insufficiency regarding the solution search equation, which is used to generate new candidate solutions based on the information of previous solutions.  The proposed work addressed two problems: first to find the optimal equation using Genetic Algorithm(GA) and next it adopts an modified  Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) to get the optimal threshold to detect the duplicate records more accurately and also it reduces human intervention.     Hybrid ABC optimized MARS-based modeling of the milling tool wear from milling run experimental data

    Milling cutters are important cutting tools used in milling machines to perform milling operations, which are prone to wear and subsequent failure. In this paper, a practical new hybrid model to predict the milling tool wear in a regular cut, as well as entry cut and exit cut, of a milling tool is proposed. The model was based on the optimization tool termed artificial bee colony (ABC) in combination with multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) technique. This optimization mechanism involved the parameter setting in the MARS training procedure, which significantly influences the regression accuracy. Therefore, an ABC–MARS-based model was successfully used here to predict the milling tool flank wear (output variable) as a function of the following input variables: the time duration of experiment, depth of cut, feed, type of material, etc. Regression with optimal hyperparameters was performed and a determination coefficient of 0.94 was obtained. The ABC–MARS-based model's goodness of fit to experimental data confirmed the good performance of this model. This new model also allowed us to ascertain the most influential parameters on the milling tool flank wear with a view to proposing milling machine's improvements. Finally, conclusions of this study are exposed

    Optimization of machining processes using pattern search algorithm

    Optimization of machining processes not only increases machining efficiency and economics, but also the end product quality. In recent years, among the traditional optimization methods, stochastic direct search optimization methods such as meta-heuristic algorithms are being increasingly applied for solving machining optimization problems. Their ability to deal with complex, multi-dimensional and ill-behaved optimization problems made them the preferred optimization tool by most researchers and practitioners. This paper introduces the use of pattern search (PS) algorithm, as a deterministic direct search optimization method, for solving machining optimization problems. To analyze the applicability and performance of the PS algorithm, six case studies of machining optimization problems, both single and multi-objective, were considered. The PS algorithm was employed to determine optimal combinations of machining parameters for different machining processes such as abrasive waterjet machining, turning, turn-milling, drilling, electrical discharge machining and wire electrical discharge machining. In each case study the optimization solutions obtained by the PS algorithm were compared with the optimization solutions that had been determined by past researchers using meta-heuristic algorithms. Analysis of obtained optimization results indicates that the PS algorithm is very applicable for solving machining optimization problems showing good competitive potential against stochastic direct search methods such as meta-heuristic algorithms.     Selection of parameters for advanced machining processes using firefly algorithm

    AbstractAdvanced machining processes (AMPs) are widely utilized in industries for machining complex geometries and intricate profiles. In this paper, two significant processes such as electric discharge machining (EDM) and abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) are considered to get the optimum values of responses for the given range of process parameters. The firefly algorithm (FA) is attempted to the considered processes to obtain optimized parameters and the results obtained are compared with the results given by previous researchers. The variation of process parameters with respect to the responses are plotted to confirm the optimum results obtained using FA. In EDM process, the performance parameter “MRR” is increased from 159.70gm/min to 181.6723gm/min, while “Ra” and “REWR” are decreased from 6.21ÎŒm to 3.6767ÎŒm and 6.21% to 6.324×10−5% respectively. In AWJM process, the value of the “kerf” and “Ra” are decreased from 0.858mm to 0.3704mm and 5.41mm to 4.443mm respectively. In both the processes, the obtained results show a significant improvement in the responses
