Autonomy and Intelligence in the Computing Continuum: Challenges, Enablers, and Future Directions for Orchestration
Future AI applications require performance, reliability and privacy that the
existing, cloud-dependant system architectures cannot provide. In this article,
we study orchestration in the device-edge-cloud continuum, and focus on AI for
edge, that is, the AI methods used in resource orchestration. We claim that to
support the constantly growing requirements of intelligent applications in the
device-edge-cloud computing continuum, resource orchestration needs to embrace
edge AI and emphasize local autonomy and intelligence. To justify the claim, we
provide a general definition for continuum orchestration, and look at how
current and emerging orchestration paradigms are suitable for the computing
continuum. We describe certain major emerging research themes that may affect
future orchestration, and provide an early vision of an orchestration paradigm
that embraces those research themes. Finally, we survey current key edge AI
methods and look at how they may contribute into fulfilling the vision of

Marine Resources, Climate Change and International Management Regimes
This open access volume examines how international institutions set up to manage marine living resources are adapting to the effects of climate change on the geographic distribution of these resources. In the Barents Sea, the worldâs biggest cod stock is expanding north-eastwards, while in the Nordic Seas significant changes in abundance, distribution and migration patterns can be observed in the worldâs largest stocks for mackerel and herring. In the Antarctic, increasing temperatures and the associated declines in sea ice, ocean acidification and changes in circulation is likely to affect the geographical distribution of krill, the keystone species of Southern Ocean ecosystems. These developments put established international management regimes under pressure. In this interdisciplinary research volume, world-leading marine biologists, international lawyers and political scientists join efforts to study the resilience of Arctic and Antarctic marine resource management institutions to large-scale shifts of major marine stocks. Improving Energy Efficiency through Data-Driven Modeling, Simulation and Optimization
In October 2014, the EU leaders agreed upon three key targets for the year 2030: a reduction by at least 40% in greenhouse gas emissions, savings of at least 27% for renewable energy, and improvements by at least 27% in energy efficiency. The increase in computational power combined with advanced modeling and simulation tools makes it possible to derive new technological solutions that can enhance the energy efficiency of systems and that can reduce the ecological footprint.
