Social Dynamics of Digg
Online social media provide multiple ways to find interesting content. One
important method is highlighting content recommended by user's friends. We
examine this process on one such site, the news aggregator Digg. With a
stochastic model of user behavior, we distinguish the effects of the content
visibility and interestingness to users. We find a wide range of interest and
distinguish stories primarily of interest to a users' friends from those of
interest to the entire user community. We show how this model predicts a
story's eventual popularity from users' early reactions to it, and estimate the
prediction reliability. This modeling framework can help evaluate alternative

LiveRank: How to Refresh Old Datasets
This paper considers the problem of refreshing a dataset. More precisely ,
given a collection of nodes gathered at some time (Web pages, users from an
online social network) along with some structure (hyperlinks, social
relationships), we want to identify a significant fraction of the nodes that
still exist at present time. The liveness of an old node can be tested through
an online query at present time. We call LiveRank a ranking of the old pages so
that active nodes are more likely to appear first. The quality of a LiveRank is
measured by the number of queries necessary to identify a given fraction of the
active nodes when using the LiveRank order. We study different scenarios from a
static setting where the Liv-eRank is computed before any query is made, to
dynamic settings where the LiveRank can be updated as queries are processed.
Our results show that building on the PageRank can lead to efficient LiveRanks,
for Web graphs as well as for online social networks
Fairness in Algorithmic Decision Making: An Excursion Through the Lens of Causality
As virtually all aspects of our lives are increasingly impacted by
algorithmic decision making systems, it is incumbent upon us as a society to
ensure such systems do not become instruments of unfair discrimination on the
basis of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, etc. We consider the problem of
determining whether the decisions made by such systems are discriminatory,
through the lens of causal models. We introduce two definitions of group
fairness grounded in causality: fair on average causal effect (FACE), and fair
on average causal effect on the treated (FACT). We use the Rubin-Neyman
potential outcomes framework for the analysis of cause-effect relationships to
robustly estimate FACE and FACT. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our
proposed approach on synthetic data. Our analyses of two real-world data sets,
the Adult income data set from the UCI repository (with gender as the protected
attribute), and the NYC Stop and Frisk data set (with race as the protected
attribute), show that the evidence of discrimination obtained by FACE and FACT,
or lack thereof, is often in agreement with the findings from other studies. We
further show that FACT, being somewhat more nuanced compared to FACE, can yield
