Development and testing of a dual accelerometer vector sensor for AUV acoustic surveys
This paper presents the design, manufacturing and testing of a Dual Accelerometer Vector Sensor (DAVS). The device was built within the activities of theWiMUST project, supported under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme, which aims to improve the efficiency of the methodologies used to perform geophysical acoustic surveys at sea by the use of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). The DAVS has the potential to contribute to this aim in various ways, for example, owing to its spatial filtering capability, it may reduce the amount of post processing by discriminating the bottom from the surface reflections. Additionally, its compact size allows easier integration with AUVs and hence facilitates the vehicle manoeuvrability compared to the classical towed arrays. The present paper is focused on results related to acoustic wave azimuth estimation as an example of its spatial filtering capabilities. The DAVS device consists of two tri-axial accelerometers and one hydrophone moulded in one unit. Sensitivity and directionality of these three sensors were measured in a tank, whilst the direction estimation capabilities of the accelerometers paired with the hydrophone, forming a vector sensor, were evaluated on a Medusa Class AUV, which was sailing around a deployed sound source. Self-Calibration Methods for Uncontrolled Environments in Sensor Networks: A Reference Survey
Growing progress in sensor technology has constantly expanded the number and
range of low-cost, small, and portable sensors on the market, increasing the
number and type of physical phenomena that can be measured with wirelessly
connected sensors. Large-scale deployments of wireless sensor networks (WSN)
involving hundreds or thousands of devices and limited budgets often constrain
the choice of sensing hardware, which generally has reduced accuracy,
precision, and reliability. Therefore, it is challenging to achieve good data
quality and maintain error-free measurements during the whole system lifetime.
Self-calibration or recalibration in ad hoc sensor networks to preserve data
quality is essential, yet challenging, for several reasons, such as the
existence of random noise and the absence of suitable general models.
Calibration performed in the field, without accurate and controlled
instrumentation, is said to be in an uncontrolled environment. This paper
provides current and fundamental self-calibration approaches and models for
wireless sensor networks in uncontrolled environments
Source localization using acoustic vector sensors: a music approach
Traditionally, a large array of microphones is used to localize multiple far field sources in acoustics. We present a sound source localization technique that requires far less channels and measurement locations (affecting data channels, setup times and cabling issues). This is achieved by using an acoustic vector sensor (AVS) in air that consists of four collocated sensors: three orthogonally placed acoustic particle velocity sensors and an omnidirectional sound pressure transducer. Experimental evidence is presented demonstrating that a single 4 channel AVS based approach accurately localizes two uncorrelated sources. The method is extended to multiple AVS, increasing the number of sources that can be identified. Theory and measurement results are presented. Attention is paid to the theoretical possibilities and limitations of this approach, as well as the signal processing techniques based on the MUSIC method
Euclidean Distance Matrices: Essential Theory, Algorithms and Applications
Euclidean distance matrices (EDM) are matrices of squared distances between
points. The definition is deceivingly simple: thanks to their many useful
properties they have found applications in psychometrics, crystallography,
machine learning, wireless sensor networks, acoustics, and more. Despite the
usefulness of EDMs, they seem to be insufficiently known in the signal
processing community. Our goal is to rectify this mishap in a concise tutorial.
We review the fundamental properties of EDMs, such as rank or
(non)definiteness. We show how various EDM properties can be used to design
algorithms for completing and denoising distance data. Along the way, we
demonstrate applications to microphone position calibration, ultrasound
tomography, room reconstruction from echoes and phase retrieval. By spelling
out the essential algorithms, we hope to fast-track the readers in applying
EDMs to their own problems. Matlab code for all the described algorithms, and
to generate the figures in the paper, is available online. Finally, we suggest

Ad Hoc Microphone Array Calibration: Euclidean Distance Matrix Completion Algorithm and Theoretical Guarantees
This paper addresses the problem of ad hoc microphone array calibration where
only partial information about the distances between microphones is available.
We construct a matrix consisting of the pairwise distances and propose to
estimate the missing entries based on a novel Euclidean distance matrix
completion algorithm by alternative low-rank matrix completion and projection
onto the Euclidean distance space. This approach confines the recovered matrix
to the EDM cone at each iteration of the matrix completion algorithm. The
theoretical guarantees of the calibration performance are obtained considering
the random and locally structured missing entries as well as the measurement
noise on the known distances. This study elucidates the links between the
calibration error and the number of microphones along with the noise level and
the ratio of missing distances. Thorough experiments on real data recordings
and simulated setups are conducted to demonstrate these theoretical insights. A
significant improvement is achieved by the proposed Euclidean distance matrix
completion algorithm over the state-of-the-art techniques for ad hoc microphone

Multisource Self-calibration for Sensor Arrays
Calibration of a sensor array is more involved if the antennas have direction
dependent gains and multiple calibrator sources are simultaneously present. We
study this case for a sensor array with arbitrary geometry but identical
elements, i.e. elements with the same direction dependent gain pattern. A
weighted alternating least squares (WALS) algorithm is derived that iteratively
solves for the direction independent complex gains of the array elements, their
noise powers and their gains in the direction of the calibrator sources. An
extension of the problem is the case where the apparent calibrator source
locations are unknown, e.g., due to refractive propagation paths. For this
case, the WALS method is supplemented with weighted subspace fitting (WSF)
direction finding techniques. Using Monte Carlo simulations we demonstrate that
both methods are asymptotically statistically efficient and converge within two
iterations even in cases of low SNR.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Teaching old sensors New tricks: archetypes of intelligence
In this paper a generic intelligent sensor software architecture is described which builds upon the basic requirements of related industry standards (IEEE 1451 and SEVA BS- 7986). It incorporates specific functionalities such as real-time fault detection, drift compensation, adaptation to environmental changes and autonomous reconfiguration. The modular based structure of the intelligent sensor architecture provides enhanced flexibility in regard to the choice of specific algorithmic realizations. In this context, the particular aspects of fault detection and drift estimation are discussed. A mixed indicative/corrective fault detection approach is proposed while it is demonstrated that reversible/irreversible state dependent drift can be estimated using generic algorithms such as the EKF or on-line density estimators. Finally, a parsimonious density estimator is presented and validated through simulated and real data for use in an operating regime dependent fault detection framework
