    Toward Holistic Energy Management Strategies for Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles in Heavy-Duty Applications

    The increasing need to slow down climate change for environmental protection demands further advancements toward regenerative energy and sustainable mobility. While individual mobility applications are assumed to be satisfied with improving battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the growing sector of freight transport and heavy-duty applications requires alternative solutions to meet the requirements of long ranges and high payloads. Fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEVs) emerge as a capable technology for high-energy applications. This technology comprises a fuel cell system (FCS) for energy supply combined with buffering energy storages, such as batteries or ultracapacitors. In this article, recent successful developments regarding FCHEVs in various heavy-duty applications are presented. Subsequently, an overview of the FCHEV drivetrain, its main components, and different topologies with an emphasis on heavy-duty trucks is given. In order to enable system layout optimization and energy management strategy (EMS) design, functionality and modeling approaches for the FCS, battery, ultracapacitor, and further relevant subsystems are briefly described. Afterward, common methodologies for EMS are structured, presenting a new taxonomy for dynamic optimization-based EMS from a control engineering perspective. Finally, the findings lead to a guideline toward holistic EMS, encouraging the co-optimization of system design, and EMS development for FCHEVs. For the EMS, we propose a layered model predictive control (MPC) approach, which takes velocity planning, the mitigation of degradation effects, and the auxiliaries into account simultaneously

    The second-generation hybrid and Electric Vehicles are currently leading the paradigm shift in the automobile industry, replacing conventional diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles. The Battery Management System is crucial in these electric vehicles and also essential for renewable energy storage systems. This review paper focuses on batteries and addresses concerns, difficulties, and solutions associated with them. It explores key technologies of Battery Management System, including battery modeling, state estimation, and battery charging. A thorough analysis of numerous battery models, including electric, thermal, and electro-thermal models, is provided in the article. Additionally, it surveys battery state estimations for a charge and health. Furthermore, the different battery charging approaches and optimization methods are discussed. The Battery Management System performs a wide range of tasks, including as monitoring voltage and current, estimating charge and discharge, equalizing and protecting the battery, managing temperature conditions, and managing battery data. It also looks at various cell balancing circuit types, current and voltage stressors, control reliability, power loss, efficiency, as well as their advantages and disadvantages.     Control of Energy Storage

    Energy storage can provide numerous beneficial services and cost savings within the electricity grid, especially when facing future challenges like renewable and electric vehicle (EV) integration. Public bodies, private companies and individuals are deploying storage facilities for several purposes, including arbitrage, grid support, renewable generation, and demand-side management. Storage deployment can therefore yield benefits like reduced frequency fluctuation, better asset utilisation and more predictable power profiles. Such uses of energy storage can reduce the cost of energy, reduce the strain on the grid, reduce the environmental impact of energy use, and prepare the network for future challenges. This Special Issue of Energies explore the latest developments in the control of energy storage in support of the wider energy network, and focus on the control of storage rather than the storage technology itself

    Design Approaches to Enhance Power Density in Power Converters for Traction Applications

    This dissertation presents a design strategy to increase the power density for automotive Power Conversion Units (PCUs) consisting of DC-DC and DC-AC stages. The strategy significantly improves the volumetric power density, as evident by a proposed PCU constructed and tested having 55.6 kW/L, representing an 11.2 % improvement on the Department of Energy’s 2025 goal of 50 kW/L for the same power electronics architecture. The dissertation begins with a custom magnetic design procedure, based on optimization of a predetermined C-core geometrical relationship and custom Litz wire. It accounts for electrical and thermal tradeoffs to produce a magnetic structure to best accomplish volume and thermal constraints. This work is coupled with a control strategy for the DC-DC converter whereby a variable-frequency Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) control is used to further reduce the required values of the passive components, to provide an increase in power density and a large improvement of low-power-level efficiency, experimentally demonstrated at full power through an 80 kW Interleaved Boost Converter. Integration of this enhanced DC-DC stage to the DC-AC stage requires a DC-Link capacitor, which hinders achieving power density targets. Increasing the switching frequency is an established method of reducing the size of passives. However, it is the RMS current sizing requirements that diminishes any gains achieved by raising the switching frequency. A synchronous carrier phase shift-based control algorithm, that aligns the output current of the boost stage with the input current of an inverter, is proposed to reduce the RMS current in the DC-Link capacitor by up to 25% and an average 20% smaller capacitor volume. Lastly, a new electrothermal platform based on paralleled discrete devices is presented for a 50 kW traction inverter. Embedded capacitors within the vacant volume of the hybrid material thermal management structure enables higher power density (155 kW/L) and significantly reduces cost

    A Comprehensive Review on Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Energy Control and Management Strategies

    We show a new technology to manage solid waste services through optimization methods (on sectoring, routing costs, and resources). This technology is called optimized planning and integrated logistics management (OPILM). It is being applied to Brazilian municipalities as it attends to their major natural features. The technology is formed by a framework of computational systems that uses optimization methods from sector arc routing and scheduling, fleet and staff scheduling, using also mobile smartphone apps. We present some of the results of real cases evaluated for residential refuse collection and selective waste collection in two Brazilian cities (Petrópolis/RJ and Bom Jesus dos Perdões/SP). The plan implementations achieved 17.9% from actual fixed and variable cost savings for sectors (vehicles and workers) and routes (time and distances) for residential refuse collection in Petrópolis/RJ. For the selective waste collection, we detail how we made our project to Bom Jesus dos Perdões/SP. We also present the returns considering costs involved in the management of the operational level and amortized by the investment required to use and apply the proposed technology for Petrópolis/SP

    Batteries and Supercapacitors Aging

    Electrochemical energy storage is a key element of systems in a wide range of sectors, such as electro-mobility, portable devices, and renewable energy. The energy storage systems (ESSs) considered here are batteries, supercapacitors, and hybrid components such as lithium-ion capacitors. The durability of ESSs determines the total cost of ownership, the global impacts (lifecycle) on a large portion of these applications and, thus, their viability. Understanding ESS aging is a key to optimizing their design and usability in terms of their intended applications. Knowledge of ESS aging is also essential to improve their dependability (reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety).     Holistic Management of Energy Storage System for Electric Vehicles

    While electric vehicles (EVs) have recently gained popularity owing to their economic and environmental benefits, they have not yet dominated conventional combustion-engine vehicles in the market. This is due mainly to their short driving range, high cost and/or quick battery performance degradation. One way to mitigate these shortcomings is to optimize the driving range and the degradation rate with a more efficient battery management system (BMS). This dissertation explores how a more efficient BMS can extend EVs' driving range during their warranty periods. Without changing the battery capacity/size, the driving range and the degradation rate can be optimized by adaptively regulating main operational conditions: battery ambient temperature (T), the amount of transferred battery energy, discharge/charge current (I), and the range of operating voltage (min/max V). To this end, we build a real-time adaptive BMS from a cyber-physical system (CPS) perspective. This adaptive BMS calculates target operation conditions (T, I, min/max V) based on: (a) a battery performance model that captures the effects of operational conditions on the degradation rate and the driving range; (b) a real-time battery power predictor; and (c) a temperature and discharge/charge current scheduler to determine target battery operation conditions that guarantee the warranty period and maximize the driving range. Physical components of the CPS actuate battery control knobs to achieve the target operational conditions scheduled by the batteries cyber components of CPS. There are two subcomponents for each condition (T, I): (d) a battery thermal management system and (e) a battery discharge/charge current management system that consists of algorithms and hardware platforms for each sub-system. This dissertation demonstrates that a more efficient real-time BMS can provide EVs with necessary energy for the specified period of time while slowing down performance degradation. Our proposed BMS adjusts temperature and discharge/charge current in real time, considering battery power requirements and behavior patterns, so as to maximize the battery performance for all battery types and drivers.     A comprehensive study of key Electric Vehicle (EV) components, technologies, challenges, impacts, and future direction of development

    Abstract: Electric vehicles (EV), including Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), are becoming more commonplace in the transportation sector in recent times. As the present trend suggests, this mode of transport is likely to replace internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in the near future. Each of the main EV components has a number of technologies that are currently in use or can become prominent in the future. EVs can cause significant impacts on the environment, power system, and other related sectors. The present power system could face huge instabilities with enough EV penetration, but with proper management and coordination, EVs can be turned into a major contributor to the successful implementation of the smart grid concept. There are possibilities of immense environmental benefits as well, as the EVs can extensively reduce the greenhouse gas emissions produced by the transportation sector. However, there are some major obstacles for EVs to overcome before totally replacing ICE vehicles. This paper is focused on reviewing all the useful data available on EV configurations, battery energy sources, electrical machines, charging techniques, optimization techniques, impacts, trends, and possible directions of future developments.
