Parametric shortest-path algorithms via tropical geometry

We study parameterized versions of classical algorithms for computing shortest-path trees. This is most easily expressed in terms of tropical geometry. Applications include shortest paths in traffic networks with variable link travel times.Comment: 24 pages and 8 figure

Counting Arithmetical Structures on Paths and Cycles

Let G be a finite, connected graph. An arithmetical structure on G is a pair of positive integer vectors d, r such that (diag (d) - A) r=0 , where A is the adjacency matrix of G. We investigate the combinatorics of arithmetical structures on path and cycle graphs, as well as the associated critical groups (the torsion part of the cokernels of the matrices (diag (d) - A)). For paths, we prove that arithmetical structures are enumerated by the Catalan numbers, and we obtain refined enumeration results related to ballot sequences. For cycles, we prove that arithmetical structures are enumerated by the binomial coefficients ((2n-1)/(n-1)) , and we obtain refined enumeration results related to multisets. In addition, we determine the critical groups for all arithmetical structures on paths and cycles

Counting Triangulations and other Crossing-Free Structures Approximately

We consider the problem of counting straight-edge triangulations of a given set PP of nn points in the plane. Until very recently it was not known whether the exact number of triangulations of PP can be computed asymptotically faster than by enumerating all triangulations. We now know that the number of triangulations of PP can be computed in O(2n)O^{*}(2^{n}) time, which is less than the lower bound of Ω(2.43n)\Omega(2.43^{n}) on the number of triangulations of any point set. In this paper we address the question of whether one can approximately count triangulations in sub-exponential time. We present an algorithm with sub-exponential running time and sub-exponential approximation ratio, that is, denoting by Λ\Lambda the output of our algorithm, and by cnc^{n} the exact number of triangulations of PP, for some positive constant cc, we prove that cnΛcn2o(n)c^{n}\leq\Lambda\leq c^{n}\cdot 2^{o(n)}. This is the first algorithm that in sub-exponential time computes a (1+o(1))(1+o(1))-approximation of the base of the number of triangulations, more precisely, cΛ1n(1+o(1))cc\leq\Lambda^{\frac{1}{n}}\leq(1 + o(1))c. Our algorithm can be adapted to approximately count other crossing-free structures on PP, keeping the quality of approximation and running time intact. In this paper we show how to do this for matchings and spanning trees.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures. A preliminary version appeared at CCCG 201

BPS state counting on singular varieties

We define new partition functions for theories with targets on toric singularities via products of old partition functions on crepant resolutions. We compute explicit examples and show that the new partition functions turn out to be homogeneous on MacMahon factors.Comment: 16 pages Latex. Text reorganized. Memory-Constrained Algorithms for Simple Polygons

    Get PDF
A constant-workspace algorithm has read-only access to an input array and may use only O(1) additional words of O(logn)O(\log n) bits, where nn is the size of the input. We assume that a simple nn-gon is given by the ordered sequence of its vertices. We show that we can find a triangulation of a plane straight-line graph in O(n2)O(n^2) time. We also consider preprocessing a simple polygon for shortest path queries when the space constraint is relaxed to allow ss words of working space. After a preprocessing of O(n2)O(n^2) time, we are able to solve shortest path queries between any two points inside the polygon in O(n2/s)O(n^2/s) time.Comment: Preprint appeared in EuroCG 201
