On the need of opening up crowdsourced emergency management systems

Nowadays, socialmediaanalysissystemsarefeedingonusercontributed data, either for beneficial purposes, such as emergency management, or for user profiling and mass surveillance. Here, we carry out a discussion about the power and pitfalls of public accessibility to social media-based systems, with specific regards to the emergency management application EARS (Earthquake Alert and Report System). We investigate whether opening such systems to the population at large would further strengthen the link between communities of volunteer citizens, intelligent systems, and decision makers, thus going in the direction of developing more sustainable and resilient societies. Our analysis highlights fundamental chal- lenges and provides interesting insights into a number of research directions with the aim of developing human-centered social media-based systems

The Development and Usage of the Greenstone Digital Library Software

    Get PDF
The Greenstone software has helped spread the practical impact of digital library technology throughout the world-particularly in developing countries. This article reviews the project’s origins, usage, and the development of support mechanisms for Greenstone users. We begin with a brief summary of salient aspects of this open source software package and its user population. Next we describe how its international, humanitarian focus arose. We then review the special requirements imposed by the conditions that prevail in developing courtiers. Finally we discuss efforts to establish regional support organizations for Greenstone in India and Africa

3D City Models and urban information: Current issues and perspectives

    Get PDF
Considering sustainable development of cities implies investigating cities in a holistic way taking into account many interrelations between various urban or environmental issues. 3D city models are increasingly used in different cities and countries for an intended wide range of applications beyond mere visualization. Could these 3D City models be used to integrate urban and environmental knowledge? How could they be improved to fulfill such role? We believe that enriching the semantics of current 3D city models, would extend their functionality and usability; therefore, they could serve as integration platforms of the knowledge related to urban and environmental issues allowing a huge and significant improvement of city sustainable management and development. But which elements need to be added to 3D city models? What are the most efficient ways to realize such improvement / enrichment? How to evaluate the usability of these improved 3D city models? These were the questions tackled by the COST Action TU0801 “Semantic enrichment of 3D city models for sustainable urban development”. This book gathers various materials developed all along the four year of the Action and the significant breakthroughs

The 21st Century School : Transforming Schools through Connected Learning

Transforming Schools through connected learning means that changing the way we work, live, play, and learn. The 21st Century School will shape the future of the Internet by creating unprecedented value and opportunity for our customers, employees, investors and ecosystem that addresses every student’s individual learning style with online curriculum. There are four steps to do transformation. Step 1: Connect all buildings and provide access to critical information Step 2: Implement network-based applications to improve administrative efficiency Step 3: Put teacher proficiency and productivity Step 4: Create a student-centered learning environment to achieve academic excellence. The images from security cameras can be viewed by authorized users over that connects the internet, where bells, alarms, heating, AC, lighting, and other building systems can be centralized and monitored from any location, that provides teachers and staff with the information they need around the clock, from anywhere that automatically communicates with parents about homework, attendance, and school events, that connects the internet classes and experts from around the world. By implementing this concept, it will move to a studentcentered learning environment, learning centers, lecture theaters, group rooms, quiet areas, anytime, anywhere access, interactive whiteboard, web tablets, wireless schools and flexible furniture. It will also create in-school environments that are similar to the outside world, offer learning 24/7, train teachers and professors and give access from anywhere anytime and provide automate administrative tasks

Knowledge-Intensive Processes: Characteristics, Requirements and Analysis of Contemporary Approaches

    Get PDF
Engineering of knowledge-intensive processes (KiPs) is far from being mastered, since they are genuinely knowledge- and data-centric, and require substantial flexibility, at both design- and run-time. In this work, starting from a scientific literature analysis in the area of KiPs and from three real-world domains and application scenarios, we provide a precise characterization of KiPs. Furthermore, we devise some general requirements related to KiPs management and execution. Such requirements contribute to the definition of an evaluation framework to assess current system support for KiPs. To this end, we present a critical analysis on a number of existing process-oriented approaches by discussing their efficacy against the requirements
