    Self-stabilizing TDMA Algorithms for Wireless Ad-hoc Networks without External Reference

    Time division multiple access (TDMA) is a method for sharing communication media. In wireless communications, TDMA algorithms often divide the radio time into timeslots of uniform size, ξ\xi, and then combine them into frames of uniform size, τ\tau. We consider TDMA algorithms that allocate at least one timeslot in every frame to every node. Given a maximal node degree, δ\delta, and no access to external references for collision detection, time or position, we consider the problem of collision-free self-stabilizing TDMA algorithms that use constant frame size. We demonstrate that this problem has no solution when the frame size is τ<max{2δ,χ2}\tau < \max\{2\delta,\chi_2\}, where χ2\chi_2 is the chromatic number for distance-22 vertex coloring. As a complement to this lower bound, we focus on proving the existence of collision-free self-stabilizing TDMA algorithms that use constant frame size of τ\tau. We consider basic settings (no hardware support for collision detection and no prior clock synchronization), and the collision of concurrent transmissions from transmitters that are at most two hops apart. In the context of self-stabilizing systems that have no external reference, we are the first to study this problem (to the best of our knowledge), and use simulations to show convergence even with computation time uncertainties

    Self-Stabilizing TDMA Algorithms for Dynamic Wireless Ad-hoc Networks

    In dynamic wireless ad-hoc networks (DynWANs), autonomous computing devices set up a network for the communication needs of the moment. These networks require the implementation of a medium access control (MAC) layer. We consider MAC protocols for DynWANs that need to be autonomous and robust as well as have high bandwidth utilization, high predictability degree of bandwidth allocation, and low communication delay in the presence of frequent topological changes to the communication network. Recent studies have shown that existing implementations cannot guarantee the necessary satisfaction of these timing requirements. We propose a self-stabilizing MAC algorithm for DynWANs that guarantees a short convergence period, and by that, it can facilitate the satisfaction of severe timing requirements, such as the above. Besides the contribution in the algorithmic front of research, we expect that our proposal can enable quicker adoption by practitioners and faster deployment of DynWANs that are subject changes in the network topology

    Time division multiple access scheduling strategies for emerging vehicular ad hoc network medium access control protocols: a survey

    [EN] Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is an emerging and promising technology, which allows vehicles while moving on the road to communicate and share resources. These resources are aimed at improving traffic safety and providing comfort to drivers and passengers. The resources use applications that have to meet high reliability and delay constraints. However, to implement these applications, VANET relies on medium access control (MAC) protocol. Many approaches have been proposed in the literature using time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme to enhance the efficiency of MAC protocol. Nevertheless, this technique has encountered some challenges including access and merging collisions due to inefficient time slot allocation strategy and hidden terminal problem. Despite several attempts to study this class of protocol, issues such as channel access and time slot scheduling strategy have not been given much attention. In this paper, we have relatively examined the most prominent TDMA MAC protocols which were proposed in the literature from 2010 to 2018. These protocols were classified based on scheduling strategy and the technique adopted. Also, we have comparatively analyzed them based on different parameters and performance metrics used.     Collision Avoidance Based Neighbor Discovery in Ad Hoc Wireless Networks

    [EN] Neighbor discovery is an important first step after the deployment of ad hoc wireless networks since they are a type of network that do not provide a communications infrastructure right after their deployment, the devices have radio transceivers which provide a limited transmission range, and there is a lack of knowledge of the potential neighbors. In this work two proposals to overcome the neighbor discovery in static one-hop environments in the presence of collisions, are presented. We performed simulations through Castalia 3.2, to compare the performance of the proposals against that for two protocols from the literature, i.e. PRR and Hello, and evaluate them according to six metrics. According to simulation results, the Leader-based proposal (O(N)) outperforms the other protocols in terms of neighbor discovery time, throughput, discoveries vs packets sent ratio, and packets received vs sent ratio, and the TDMA-based proposal is the slowest (O(N-2)) and presents the worst results regarding energy consumption, and discoveries vs packets sent ratio. However, both proposals follow a predetermined transmission schedule that allows them to discover all the neighbors with probability 1, and use a feedback mechanism. We also performed an analytical study for both proposals according to several metrics.     Novel Medium Access Control (MAC) Protocols for Wireless Sensor and Ad Hoc Networks (WSANs) and Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs)

    Efficient medium access control (MAC) is a key part of any wireless network communication architecture. MAC protocols are needed for nodes to access the shared wireless medium efficiently. Providing high throughput is one of the primary goals of the MAC protocols designed for wireless networks. MAC protocols for Wireless Sensor and Ad hoc networks (WSANs) must also conserve energy as sensor nodes have limited battery power. On the other hand, MAC protocols for Vehicular Ad hoc networks (VANETs) must also adapt to the highly dynamic nature of the network. As communication link failure is very common in VANETs because of the fast movement of vehicles so quick reservation of packet transmission slots by vehicles is important. In this thesis we propose two new distributed MAC algorithms. One is for WSANs and the other one is for VANETs. We demonstrate using simulations that our algorithms outperform the state-of-the-art algorithms

    TDMA Slot Reservation in Cluster-Based VANETs

    Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are a form of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) in which vehicles on the road form the nodes of the network. VANETs provide several services to enhance the safety and comfort of drivers and passengers. These services can be obtained by the wireless exchange of information among the vehicles driving on the road. In particular, the transmission of two different types of messages, safety/update and non-safety messages. The transmission of safety/update message aims to inform the nearby vehicles about the sender\u27s current status and/or a detected dangerous situation. This type of transmission is designed to help in accident and danger avoidance. Moreover, it requires high message generated rate and high reliability. On the other hand, the transmission of non-safety message aims to increase the comfort on vehicles by supporting several non-safety services, from notifications of traffic conditions to file sharing. Unfortunately, the transmission of non-safety message has less priority than safety messages, which may cause shutting down the comfort services. The goal of this dissertation is to design a MAC protocol in order to provide the ability of the transmission of non-safety message with little impact on the reliability of transmitting safety message even if the traffic and communication densities are high. VANET is a highly dynamic network. With lack of specialized hardware for infrastructure and the mobility to support network stability and channel utilization, acluster-based MAC protocol is needed to solve these overcomes. This dissertation makes the following contributions: 1. A multi-channel cluster-based TDMA MAC protocol to coordinate intracluster communications (TC-MAC) 2. A CH election and cluster formation algorithm based on the traffic flow and a cluster maintenance algorithm that benefits from our cluster formation algorithm 3. A multi-channel cluster-based CDNIA/TDMA hybrid MAC protocol to coordinate inter-cluster communications I will show that TC-MAC provides better performance than the current WAVE standard in terms of safety/update message reliability and non-safety message delivery. Additionally, I will show that my clustering and cluster maintenance protocol provides more stable clusters, which will reduce the overhead of clusterhead election and re-clustering and leads to an efficient hierarchical network topology
