    Clinical utility of gadobenate dimeglumine in contrast-enhanced MRI of the breast: a review

    Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the technique with the highest sensitivity for breast cancer detection. Gadobenate dimeglumine is a gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) that is specifically approved in Europe for breast MRI and which has the highest r1 relaxivity among all GBCAs for this indication. In order to improve the diagnostic performance of breast MRI, several intra-individual crossover studies have evaluated gadobenate dimeglumine as a possible GBCA for this application. This review focuses on the role and advantages of gadobenate dimeglumine as a contrast agent for breast MRI by describing the unique properties of this agent and by summarizing published studies

    Pancreatic tumors imaging: an update

    Currently, ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) represent the mainstay in the evaluation of pancreatic solid and cystic tumors affecting pancreas in 80-85% and 10-15% of the cases respectively. Integration of US, CT or MR imaging is essential for an accurate assessment of pancreatic parenchyma, ducts and adjacent soft tissues in order to detect and to stage the tumor, to differentiate solid from cystic lesions and to establish an appropriate treatment. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of pancreatic tumors and the role of imaging in their diagnosis and management. In order to a prompt and accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of pancreatic lesions, it is crucial for radiologists to know the key findings of the most frequent tumors of the pancreas and the current role of imaging modalities. A multimodality approach is often helpful. If multidetector-row CT (MDCT) is the preferred initial imaging modality in patients with clinical suspicion for pancreatic cancer, multiparametric MRI provides essential information for the detection and characterization of a wide variety of pancreatic lesions and can be used as a problem-solving tool at diagnosis and during follow-up

    The increasing incidence and high morbidity and mortality of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have inspired the creation of the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS). LI-RADS aims to reduce variability in exam interpretation, improve communication, facilitate clinical therapeutic decisions, reduce omission of pertinent information, and facilitate the monitoring of outcomes.     This work builds upon our findings that proteins secreted by hESCs exhibit pro-regenerative activity, and determines that hESC-conditioned medium robustly enhances the proliferation of both muscle and neural progenitor cells. Importantly, this work establishes that it is the proteins that bind heparin which are responsible for the pro-myogenic effects of hESC-conditioned medium, and indicates that this strategy is suitable for enriching the potentially therapeutic factors. Additionally, this work shows that hESC-secreted proteins act independently of the mitogen FGF-2, and suggests that FGF-2 is unlikely to be a pro-aging molecule in the physiological decline of old muscle repair. Moreover, hESC-secreted factors improve the viability of human cortical neurons in an Alzheimers disease (AD) model, suggesting that these factors can enhance the maintenance and regeneration of multiple tissues in the aging body

    CT and MRI imaging and interpretation of hepatic arterioportal shunts

    Hepatic arterioportal shunts (HAPS) occur due to organic or functional fistulization of blood flow between arterial hepatic vasculature and venous portal systems. It is a type of hemodynamic abnormality of the liver being observed increasingly with the use of temporal imaging modalities. HAPS occur due to other underlying hepatic abnormalities including the presence of an underlying tumor or malignancy. When a HAPS is present, the appearance of these abnormalities on imaging studies suggests an underlying abnormality, must be considered atypical even if asymptomatic, and warrants careful evaluation. Over time, and as a function of degree of fistulae, symptoms and potential life-threatening complications may arise from the HAPS. These systemic complications may include the development of portal hypertension, splenomegaly, as well as accelerated metastasis in patients with malignant tumors.     A state-of-the-art analysis of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822

    We present a detailed photometric study of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 aimed at investigating the properties of its stellar populations and, in particular, the presence of stellar radial gradients. Our goal is to analyse the stellar populations in six fields, which cover the whole bar of this dwarf galaxy. We derived the quantitative star formation history (SFH) of the six fields using the IAC method, involving IAC-pop/MinnIAC codes. The solutions we derived show an enhanced star formation rate (SFR) in Fields 1 and 3 during the past 500 Myr. The SFRs of the other fields are almost extinguished at very recent epochs and. We study the radial gradients of the SFR and consider the total mass converted into stars in two time intervals (between 0 and 0.5 Gyr ago and between 0.5 and 13.5 Gyr ago). We find that the scale lengths of the young and intermediate-to-old populations are perfectly compatible, with the exception of the young populations in Fields 1 and 3. The recent SF in these two fields is greater than in the other ones. This might be an indication that in these two fields we are sampling incipient spiral arms. Further evidence and new observations are required to prove this hypothesis. In addition, we derived the age-metallicity relations. As expected, the metallicity increases with time for all of the fields. We do not observe any radial gradient in the metallicity.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to A&

    A glance at imaging bladder cancer.

    Purpose: Early and accurate diagnosis of Bladder cancer (BCa) will contribute extensively to the management of the disease. The purpose of this review was to briefly describe the conventional imaging methods and other novel imaging modalities used for early detection of BCa and outline their pros and cons. Methods: Literature search was performed on Pubmed, PMC, and Google scholar for the period of January 2014 to February 2018 and using such words as bladder cancer, bladder tumor, bladder cancer detection, diagnosis and imaging . Results: A total of 81 published papers were retrieved and are included in the review. For patients with hematuria and suspected of BCa, cystoscopy and CT are most commonly recommended. Ultrasonography, MRI, PET/CT using 18F-FDG or 11C-choline and recently PET/MRI using 18F-FDG also play a prominent role in detection of BCa. Conclusion: For initial diagnosis of BCa, cystoscopy is generally performed. However, cystoscopy can not accurately detect carcinoma insitu (CIS) and can not distinguish benign masses from malignant lesions. CT is used in two modes, CT and computed tomographic urography (CTU), both for dignosis and staging of BCa. However, they cannot differentiate T1 and T2 BCa. MRI is performed to diagnose invasive BCa and can differentiate muscle invasive bladder carcinoma (MIBC) from non-muscle invasive bladder carcinoma (NMIBC). However, CT and MRI have low sensitivity for nodal staging. For nodal staging PET/CT is preferred. PET/MRI provides better differentiation of normal and pathologic structures as compared with PET/CT. Nonetheless none of the approaches can address all issues related for the management of BCa. Novel imaging methods that target specific biomarkers, image BCa early and accurately, and stage the disease are warranted
