    Low-cost sensors data fusion for small size unmanned aerial vehicles navigation and guidance

    A new integrated navigation system designed for small size Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is presented. The proposed system is based on a number of low-cost avionics sensors, including Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and Vision Based Sensors (VBS). The use of an Aircraft Dynamics Models (ADMs) to provide additional information to compensate for the shortcomings of Vision Based Navigation (VBN) and MEMS-IMU sensors in high-dynamics attitude determination tasks is also considered. Additionally, the research concentrates on the potential of carrier-phase GNSS for Attitude Determination (GAD) using interferometric techniques. The main objective is to design a compact, light and relatively inexpensive system capable of providing the required navigation performance (position and attitude data) in all phases of flight of small UAVs, with a special focus on precision approach and landing, where VBN techniques can be fully exploited in a multi-sensor data fusion architecture. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is developed to integrate the information provided by the different sensors and to provide estimates of position, velocity and attitude of the UAV platform in real-time. Three different integrated navigation system architectures are implemented. The first architecture uses VBN at 20 Hz and GNSS at 1 Hz to augment the MEMS-IMU running at 100 Hz. The second mode also includes the ADM (computations performed at 100 Hz) to provide augmentation of the attitude channel. The third fusion architecture uses GNSS based attitude values. The simulations are carried out on the AEROSONDE UAV performing high-dynamics manoeuvres repre-sentative of the UAV operational flight envelope. Simulation of the VBN-IMU-GNSS (VIG) integrated navigation system shows that the system can attain position, velocity and attitude accuracies complying with Category Two (CAT II) precision approach requirements. Simulation of the VBN-IMU-GNSS-ADM (VIGA) system also shows promising results, since the achieved attitude accuracy is higher using the ADM-VBN-IMU than using VBN-IMU only. However, due to rapid divergence of the ADM virtual sensor, there is a need for frequent re-initialisation of the ADM data module, which is strongly dependent on the UAV flight dynamics and the specific manoeuvring transitions performed. In the simulation of the third integrated navigation system, the VIG system is augmented by employing the GAD, forming the VIG-GAD (VIGGA) system architecture. The performances achieved with the VIG, VIGA and VIGGA integrated Navigation and Guidance System (NGS) are presented and are in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) precision approach requirements

    Design and Implementation of Intelligent Guidance Algorithms for UAV Mission Protection

    In recent years, the interest of investigating intelligent systems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have increased in popularity due to their large range of capabilities such as on-line obstacle avoidance, autonomy, search and rescue, fast prototyping and integration in the National Air Space (NAS). Many research efforts currently focus on system robustness against uncertainties but do not consider the probability of readjusting tasks based on the remaining resources to successfully complete the mission. In this thesis, an intelligent algorithm approach is proposed along with decision-making capabilities to enhance UAVs post-failure performance. This intelligent algorithm integrates a set of path planning algorithms, a health monitoring system and a power estimation approach. Post-fault conditions are considered as unknown uncertainties that unmanned vehicles could encounter during regular operation missions. In this thesis, three main threats are studied: the presence of unknown obstacles in the environment, sub-system failures, and low power resources. A solution for adapting to new circumstances is addressed by enabling autonomous decision-making and re-planning capabilities in real time

    Development of Non Expensive Technologies for Precise Maneuvering of Completely Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    In this paper, solutions for precise maneuvering of an autonomous small (e.g., 350-class) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are designed and implemented from smart modifications of non expensive mass market technologies. The considered class of vehicles suffers from light load, and, therefore, only a limited amount of sensors and computing devices can be installed on-board. Then, to make the prototype capable of moving autonomously along a fixed trajectory, a “cyber-pilot”, able on demand to replace the human operator, has been implemented on an embedded control board. This cyber-pilot overrides the commands thanks to a custom hardware signal mixer. The drone is able to localize itself in the environment without ground assistance by using a camera possibly mounted on a 3 Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) gimbal suspension. A computer vision system elaborates the video stream pointing out land markers with known absolute position and orientation. This information is fused with accelerations from a 6-DOF Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to generate a “virtual sensor” which provides refined estimates of the pose, the absolute position, the speed and the angular velocities of the drone. Due to the importance of this sensor, several fusion strategies have been investigated. The resulting data are, finally, fed to a control algorithm featuring a number of uncoupled digital PID controllers which work to bring to zero the displacement from the desired trajectory

    A novel low cost navigation system based on Vision Based Navigation (VBN) and other avionics sensors is presented, which is designed for small size Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications. The main objective of our research is to design a compact, light and relatively inexpensive system capable of providing the required navigation performance in all phases of flight of a small UAV, with a special focus on precision approach and landing, where Vision Based Navigation (VBN) techniques can be fully exploited in a multisensory integrated architecture. Various existing techniques for VBN are compared and the Appearance-based Navigation (ABN) approach is selected for implementation. Feature extraction and optical flow techniques are employed to estimate flight parameters such as roll angle, pitch angle, deviation from the runway and body rates. Additionally, we address the possible synergies between VBN, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and MEMS-IMU (Micro-Electromechanical System Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors and also the use of Aircraft Dynamics Models (ADMs) to provide additional information suitable to compensate for the shortcomings of VBN and MEMS-IMU sensors in high-dynamics attitude determination tasks. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is developed to fuse the information provided by the different sensors and to provide estimates of position, velocity and attitude of the UAV platform in real-time. Two different integrated navigation system architectures are implemented. The first uses VBN at 20 Hz and GPS at 1 Hz to augment the MEMS-IMU running at 100 Hz. The second mode also includes the ADM (computations performed at 100 Hz) to provide augmentation of the attitude channel. Simulation of these two modes is performed in a significant portion of the AEROSONDE UAV operational flight envelope and performing a variety of representative manoeuvres (i.e., straight climb, level turning, turning descent and climb, straight descent, etc.). Simulation of the first integrated navigation system architecture (VBN/IMU/GPS) shows that the integrated system can reach position, velocity and attitude accuracies compatible with CAT-II precision approach requirements. Simulation of the second system architecture (VBN/IMU/GPS/ADM) also shows promising results since the achieved attitude accuracy is higher using the ADM/VBS/IMU than using VBS/IMU only.     Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a research field in robotics which is in high demand in recent years, although there still exist many unanswered questions. In contrast, to the human operated aerial vehicles, it is still far less used to the fact that people are dubious about flying in or flying an unmanned vehicle. It is all about giving the control right to the computer (which is the Artificial Intelligence) for making decisions based on the situation like human do but this has not been easy to make people understand that it’s safe and to continue the enhancement on it. These days there are many types of UAVs available in the market for consumer use, for applications like photography to play games, to map routes, to monitor buildings, for security purposes and much more. Plus, these UAVs are also being widely used by the military for surveillance and for security reasons. One of the most commonly used consumer product is a quadcopter or quadrotor. The research carried out used modern tools (i.e., SolidWorks, Java Net Beans and MATLAB/Simulink) to model controls system for Quadcopter UAV with haptic control system to control the quadcopter in a virtual simulation environment and in real time environment. A mathematical model for the controlling the quadcopter in simulations and real time environments were introduced. Where, the design methodology for the quadcopter was defined. This methodology was then enhanced to develop a virtual simulation and real time environments for simulations and experiments. Furthermore, the haptic control was then implemented with designed control system to control the quadcopter in virtual simulation and real time experiments. By using the mathematical model of quadcopter, PID & PD control techniques were used to model the control setup for the quadcopter altitude and motion controls as work progressed. Firstly, the dynamic model is developed using a simple set of equations which evolves further by using complex control & mathematical model with precise function of actuators and aerodynamic coefficients Figure5-7. The presented results are satisfying and shows that flight experiments and simulations of the quadcopter control using haptics is a novel area of research which helps perform operations more successfully and give more control to the operator when operating in difficult environments. By using haptic accidents can be minimised and the functional performance of the operator and the UAV will be significantly enhanced. This concept and area of research of haptic control can be further developed accordingly to the needs of specific applications

    Multi shot recording using consensus-based cooperative control for a multiquadrotor system

    In this research work, we consider the control issues related to the recording of a moving ob-ject in a cinematographic environment using multiple quadrotors or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAV). First of all, we propose a model of a quadrotor with nonlinear dynamics which physicallyrepresents the behaviour of this machine, to later linearize it in order to obtain a suitable con-trol law. After that, we propose a Consensus-Based Cooperative Control so the quadrotors canfly in formation around the moving object and record it from the desired angles. This controltechnique uses a network structure that represents how the UAVs are connected to each othersharing their information. With that, each quadrotor can be aware of the state of the others in or-der to properly control the formation of the team. Then, various collision avoidance algorithmsare proposed in order to make the flights secure, so the quadrotors do not crash. Moreover, acollision avoidance technique is proposed for the camera control so the UAVs do not get insidethe Field of View (FoV) of the other recording drones. That way, the shots taken are suitablefor cinematographic purposes.     Robust hovering and trajectory tracking control of a quadrotor helicopter using acceleration feedback and a novel disturbance observer

    Hovering and trajectory tracking control of rotary-wing aircrafts in the presence of uncertainties and external disturbances is a very challenging task. This thesis focuses on the development of the robust hovering and trajectory tracking control algorithms for a quadrotor helicopter subject to both periodic and aperiodic disturbances along with noise and parametric uncertainties. A hierarchical control structure is employed where high-level position controllers produce reference attitude angles for the low-level attitude controllers. Reference attitude angles are usually determined analytically from the position command signals that control the positional dynamics. However, such analytical formulas may produce large and non-smooth reference angles which must be saturated and low-pass filtered. In this thesis, desired attitude angles are determined numerically using constrained nonlinear optimization where certain magnitude and rate constraints are imposed. Furthermore, an acceleration based disturbance observer (AbDOB) is designed to estimate and suppress disturbances acting on the positional dynamics of the quadrotor. For the attitude control, a nested position, velocity, and inner acceleration feedback control structure consisting of PID and PI type controllers are developed to provide high sti ness against external disturbances. Reliable angular acceleration is estimated through an extended Kalman filter (EKF) cascaded with a classical Kalman lter (KF). This thesis also proposes a novel disturbance observer which consists of a bank of band-pass filters connected parallel to the low-pass filter of a classical disturbance observer. Band-pass filters are centered at integer multiples of the fundamental frequency of the periodic disturbance. Number and bandwidth of the band-pass filters are two crucial parameters to be tuned in the implementation of the new structure. Proposed disturbance observer is integrated with a sliding mode controller to tackle the robust hovering and trajectory tracking control problem. The sensitivity of the proposed disturbance observer based control system to the number and bandwidth of the band-pass filters are thoroughly investigated via several simulations. Simulations are carried out on a high delity model where sensor biases and measurement noise are also considered. Results show that the proposed controllers are very effective in providing robust hovering and trajectory tracking performance when the quadrotor helicopter is subject to the wind gusts generated by the Dryden wind model along with plant uncertainties and measurement noise. A comparison with the classical disturbance observer-based control is also provided where better tracking performance with improved robustness is achieved in the presence of noise and external disturbance
