Cloudbus Toolkit for Market-Oriented Cloud Computing
This keynote paper: (1) presents the 21st century vision of computing and
identifies various IT paradigms promising to deliver computing as a utility;
(2) defines the architecture for creating market-oriented Clouds and computing
atmosphere by leveraging technologies such as virtual machines; (3) provides
thoughts on market-based resource management strategies that encompass both
customer-driven service management and computational risk management to sustain
SLA-oriented resource allocation; (4) presents the work carried out as part of
our new Cloud Computing initiative, called Cloudbus: (i) Aneka, a Platform as a
Service software system containing SDK (Software Development Kit) for
construction of Cloud applications and deployment on private or public Clouds,
in addition to supporting market-oriented resource management; (ii)
internetworking of Clouds for dynamic creation of federated computing
environments for scaling of elastic applications; (iii) creation of 3rd party
Cloud brokering services for building content delivery networks and e-Science
applications and their deployment on capabilities of IaaS providers such as
Amazon along with Grid mashups; (iv) CloudSim supporting modelling and
simulation of Clouds for performance studies; (v) Energy Efficient Resource
Allocation Mechanisms and Techniques for creation and management of Green

A Configurable Transport Layer for CAF
The message-driven nature of actors lays a foundation for developing scalable
and distributed software. While the actor itself has been thoroughly modeled,
the message passing layer lacks a common definition. Properties and guarantees
of message exchange often shift with implementations and contexts. This adds
complexity to the development process, limits portability, and removes
transparency from distributed actor systems.
In this work, we examine actor communication, focusing on the implementation
and runtime costs of reliable and ordered delivery. Both guarantees are often
based on TCP for remote messaging, which mixes network transport with the
semantics of messaging. However, the choice of transport may follow different
constraints and is often governed by deployment. As a first step towards
re-architecting actor-to-actor communication, we decouple the messaging
guarantees from the transport protocol. We validate our approach by redesigning
the network stack of the C++ Actor Framework (CAF) so that it allows to combine
an arbitrary transport protocol with additional functions for remote messaging.

LIKWID: Lightweight Performance Tools
Exploiting the performance of today's microprocessors requires intimate
knowledge of the microarchitecture as well as an awareness of the ever-growing
complexity in thread and cache topology. LIKWID is a set of command line
utilities that addresses four key problems: Probing the thread and cache
topology of a shared-memory node, enforcing thread-core affinity on a program,
measuring performance counter metrics, and microbenchmarking for reliable upper
performance bounds. Moreover, it includes a mpirun wrapper allowing for
portable thread-core affinity in MPI and hybrid MPI/threaded applications. To
demonstrate the capabilities of the tool set we show the influence of thread
affinity on performance using the well-known OpenMP STREAM triad benchmark, use
hardware counter tools to study the performance of a stencil code, and finally
show how to detect bandwidth problems on ccNUMA-based compute nodes.Comment: 12 page
