Utility Maximization for Uplink MU-MIMO: Combining Spectral-Energy Efficiency and Fairness
Driven by green communications, energy efficiency (EE) has become a new
important criterion for designing wireless communication systems. However, high
EE often leads to low spectral efficiency (SE), which spurs the research on
EE-SE tradeoff. In this paper, we focus on how to maximize the utility in
physical layer for an uplink multi-user multiple-input multipleoutput (MU-MIMO)
system, where we will not only consider EE-SE tradeoff in a unified way, but
also ensure user fairness. We first formulate the utility maximization problem,
but it turns out to be non-convex. By exploiting the structure of this problem,
we find a convexization procedure to convert the original nonconvex problem
into an equivalent convex problem, which has the same global optimum with the
original problem. Following the convexization procedure, we present a
centralized algorithm to solve the utility maximization problem, but it
requires the global information of all users. Thus we propose a primal-dual
distributed algorithm which does not need global information and just consumes
a small amount of overhead. Furthermore, we have proved that the distributed
algorithm can converge to the global optimum. Finally, the numerical results
show that our approach can both capture user diversity for EE-SE tradeoff and
ensure user fairness, and they also validate the effectiveness of our
primal-dual distributed algorithm
Resource allocation for transmit hybrid beamforming in decoupled millimeter wave multiuser-MIMO downlink
This paper presents a study on joint radio resource allocation and hybrid precoding in multicarrier massive multiple-input multiple-output communications for 5G cellular networks. In this paper, we present the resource allocation algorithm to maximize the proportional fairness (PF) spectral efficiency under the per subchannel power and the beamforming rank constraints. Two heuristic algorithms are designed. The proportional fairness hybrid beamforming algorithm provides the transmit precoder with a proportional fair spectral efficiency among users for the desired number of radio-frequency (RF) chains. Then, we transform the number of RF chains or rank constrained optimization problem into convex semidefinite programming (SDP) problem, which can be solved by standard techniques. Inspired by the formulated convex SDP problem, a low-complexity, two-step, PF-relaxed optimization algorithm has been provided for the formulated convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed suboptimal solution to the relaxed optimization problem is near-optimal for the signal-to-noise ratio SNR <= 10 dB and has a performance gap not greater than 2.33 b/s/Hz within the SNR range 0-25 dB. It also outperforms the maximum throughput and PF-based hybrid beamforming schemes for sum spectral efficiency, individual spectral efficiency, and fairness index
Flexible resource allocation for joint optimization of energy and spectral efficiency in OFDMA multi-cell networks
The radio resource allocation problem is studied, aiming to jointly optimize the energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) of downlink OFDMA multi-cell networks. Different from existing works on either EE or SE optimization, a novel EE-SE tradeoff (EST) metric, which can capture both the EST relation and the individual cells’ preferences for EE or SE performance, is introduced as the utility function for each base station (BS). Then the joint EE-SE optimization problem is formulated, and an iterative subchannel allocation and power allocation algorithm is proposed. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can exploit the EST relation flexibly and optimize the EE and SE simultaneously to meet diverse EE and SE preferences of individual cells.<br/
Wireless Cellular Networks
When aiming for achieving high spectral efficiency in wireless cellular networks, cochannel interference (CCI) becomes the dominant performancelimiting factor. This article provides a survey of CCI mitigation techniques, where both active and passive approaches are discussed in the context of both open- and closed-loop designs.More explicitly, we considered both the family of flexible frequency-reuse (FFR)-aided and dynamic channel allocation (DCA)-aided interference avoidance techniques as well as smart antenna-aided interference mitigation techniques, which may be classified as active approach
Spectral Efficiency and Energy Efficiency Tradeoff in Massive MIMO Downlink Transmission with Statistical CSIT
As a key technology for future wireless networks, massive multiple-input
multiple-output (MIMO) can significantly improve the energy efficiency (EE) and
spectral efficiency (SE), and the performance is highly dependant on the degree
of the available channel state information (CSI). While most existing works on
massive MIMO focused on the case where the instantaneous CSI at the transmitter
(CSIT) is available, it is usually not an easy task to obtain precise
instantaneous CSIT. In this paper, we investigate EE-SE tradeoff in single-cell
massive MIMO downlink transmission with statistical CSIT. To this end, we aim
to optimize the system resource efficiency (RE), which is capable of striking
an EE-SE balance. We first figure out a closed-form solution for the
eigenvectors of the optimal transmit covariance matrices of different user
terminals, which indicates that beam domain is in favor of performing RE
optimal transmission in massive MIMO downlink. Based on this insight, the RE
optimization precoding design is reduced to a real-valued power allocation
problem. Exploiting the techniques of sequential optimization and random matrix
theory, we further propose a low-complexity suboptimal two-layer
water-filling-structured power allocation algorithm. Numerical results
illustrate the effectiveness and near-optimal performance of the proposed
statistical CSI aided RE optimization approach.Comment: Typos corrected. 14 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication on

Energy and spectral efficiency tradeoff with user association and power coordination in massive MIMO enabled HetNets
In this letter, we investigate the tradeoff between energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) while ensuring proportional rate fairness in massive multiple-input multiple-output enabled heterogenous networks, where user association and power coordination are jointly considered. It is first formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem, and then transformed into a single-objective optimization problem. To solve this mixed-integer non-convex problem, an effective algorithm is developed, where the original problem is separated into lower level power coordination problem and master user association problem. Simulation results verify that our proposed algorithm can significantly improve the performance of EE-SE tradeoff and obtain higher rate fairness compared with other algorithms
