peer reviewedIn response to the European Commission's aim of cutting carbon emissions by 2050, there is a growing need for cutting-edge solutions to promote low-carbon energy consumption in public infrastructures. This paper introduces a Proof of Concept (PoC) that integrates the transparency and immutability of blockchain and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance energy efficiency in tangible government-held public assets, focusing on curbing carbon emissions. Our system design utilizes a forecasting and optimization framework, inscribing the scheduled operations of heat pumps on a public sector blockchain. Registering usage metrics on the blockchain facilitates the verification of energy conservation, allows transparency in public energy consumption, and augments public awareness of energy usage patterns. The system fine-tunes the operations of electric heat pumps, prioritizing their use during low-carbon emission periods in power systems occurring during high renewable energy generations. Adaptive temperature configuration and schedules enable energy management in public venues, but blockchains' processing power and latency may represent bottlenecks setting scalability limits. However, the proof-of-concept weakness and other barriers are surpassed by the public sector blockchain advantages, leading to future research and tech innovations to fully exploit the synergies of blockchain and IoT in harnessing sustainable, low-carbon energy in the public domain.U-AGR-7001 - C20/IS/14783405/FIReSpARX (01/07/2021 - 30/06/2025) - FRIDGEN GilbertR-AGR-3728 - PEARL/IS/13342933/DFS (01/01/2020 - 31/12/2024) - FRIDGEN Gilbert7. Federating smart cluster energy grids for peer-to-peer energy sharing and trading

With the rapid growth in clean distributed energy resources involving micro-generation and flexible loads, users can actively manage their own energy and have the capability to enter in a market of energy services as prosumers while reducing their carbon footprint. The coordination between these distributed energy resources is essential in order to ensure fair trading and equality in resource sharing among a community of prosumers. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks can provide the underlying mechanisms for supporting such coordination and offer incentives to prosumers to participate in the energy market. In particular, the federation of energy clusters with P2P networks has the potential to unlock access to energy resources and lead to the development of new energy services in a fast-growing sharing energy economy. In this paper, we present the formation and federation of smart energy clusters using P2P networks with a view to decentralise energy markets and enable access and use of clean energy resources. We implement a P2P framework to support the federation of energy clusters and study the interaction of consumers and producers in a market of energy resources and services. We demonstrate how energy exchanges and energy costs in a federation are influenced by the energy demand, the size of energy clusters and energy types. We conduct our modelling and analysis based on a real fish industry case study in Milford Haven, South Wales, as part of the EU H2020 INTERREG piSCES project

High Efficiency Isolated Three Port Dc-Dc Converter For Dc Charger Stations

The world energy crisis resulting the global warming and climate change. The renewable energy growth is capable to overcome the energy crisis. One of the technology renewable energies is electric vehicle (EV) where the demand for EV sales has increased every year. The charging technology need to be improved due to the existing alternating current (AC) charger has slow charging and limited to the low application. Besides that, the safety of consumers and equipment should also be emphasized due to current non-isolated DC-DC converter have safety issue. Therefore, the 100kW DC charger system based on isolated dual active bridge (DAB) DC-DC converter have been developed using MATLAB/Simulink software. Since the multiport EV charger have been concerned, the DAB has been expanded to three ports EV DC charger, known as triple active bridge (TAB) DC-DC converter is established. The TAB is introduced to overcome the complex configuration of the existing multiport converter that involving multiple conversion stage. Both DAB and TAB are modulated using single-phase shift (SPS) modulation and tested under various of phase-shift angle. Then, the efficiency of TAB is evaluated under several load systems which 25kW, 50kW, 75kW and 100kW. In overall, the TAB with 100kW load system have the higher efficiency compared to others by producing 86%, while the system with 75kW have the lowest efficiency with 66%

    Citizen Activities in Energy Transition

This book addresses the rapidly changing citizen roles in innovation, technology adoption, intermediation, market creation, and legitimacy building for low-carbon solutions. It links research in innovation studies, sustainability transitions, and science and technology studies, and builds a new approach for the study of user contributions to innovation and sociotechnical change. Citizen Activities in Energy Transition gives detailed and empirically grounded overall appraisal of citizens’ active technological engagement in the current energy transition, in an era when Internet connectivity has given rise to important new forms of citizen communities and interactions. It elaborates a new way to study users in sociotechnical change through long-term ethnographic and historical research and reports its deployment in a major, decade-long line of investigation on user activities in small-scale renewables, addressing user contributions from the early years to the late proliferation stages of small-scale renewable energy technologies (S-RETs). It offers a much-needed empirical and theoretical understanding of the dynamics of the activities in which users are engaged over the course of sociotechnical change, including innovation, adoption, adjustment, intermediation, community building, digital communities, market creation, and legitimacy creation. This work is a must-read for those seeking to understand the role of users in innovation, energy systems change and the significance of new digital communities in present and future sociotechnical change. Academics, policymakers, and managers are given a new resource to understand the "demand side" of sociotechnical change beyond the patterns of investment, adoption, and social acceptance that have traditionally occupied their attention

Facilitating the Growth of Local Energy Communities
