    Energy efficient data restoring after power-downs for wireless sensor networks nodes with energy scavenging

    Abstract-The article focuses on the new problem, which became topical for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) with energy harvesting possibility and which is in the realization of system and user data restoring for nodes after unexpected power-downs due to the temporal unavailability of harvested energy. Different possibilities for the creation of the restore point and data restoring after power-downs are described and evaluated in the article, which include the usage of microcontroller internal RAM and Flash memory, the usage of external EEPROM and NVRAM chips or the radio interface with joint node data storing. The evaluations for the article were made using presented Restorable Event-Based Operation System (REBOS) which is intended to solve the problem of OS and user application automatic restoring point creation and restoring after power-downs.     Energy Harvesting Techniques for Small Scale Environmentally-Powered Electronic Systems

    The continuous advances in integrated circuit fabrication technologies, circuit design, and networking techniques enable the integration of an in-creasing number of functionalities in ever smaller devices. This trend de-termines the multiplication of possible application scenarios for tiny em-bedded systems such as wireless sensors, whose utilization has grown more and more pervasive. However, the operating life time of such sys-tems, when placed in locations not allowing a wired connection to a de-pendable power supply infrastructure, is still heavily limited by the finite capacity of currently available accumulators, whose technology has not improved at the same pace of the electronic systems they supply. Energy harvesting techniques constitute a real solution to power un-tethered computing platforms in this kind of spatially-distributed applica-tions. By converting part of the energy freely available in the surrounding environment to electrical energy, the operating life of the system can be extended considerably, potentially for an unlimited time. In recent years an increasing number of researchers have investigated this possibility. In this dissertation we discuss our results about the study and design of systems capable of harvesting energy from various regenerative sources. We start with the design of an airflow energy harvester, focusing on the optimization of its power generation and efficiency performances, and obtaining superior results with respect to similar works in literature. Then we deal with the improvement of this architecture to implement a fully autonomous vibrational harvester, featuring uncommon in-the-field configuration capabilities. Afterwards we investigate the applicability of self-powered wireless sensor nodes to heavy duty and agricultural machinery, finding attractive vibration sources capable of providing enough power to sustain remarkable data transmission rates. To address remote monitoring applications with stringent needs in terms of power supply availability, we present a truly flexible multi-source energy harvester, along with a simulation framework expressly developed to anticipate the harvester performance when placed in a specific operating environment. Furthermore, the design strategies allowing energy harvesters to fully exploit the locally generated power can be profitably applied in the field of distributed electricity generation from renewable energy sources, to enhance the self-consumption capabilities of microgeneration systems. Based on this motivation, we finally propose a grid-assisted photovoltaic power supply to improve the self-sustainability of ground-source heat pumps, and analyze original data on the consumption profiles of these systems to assess the effectiveness of the design. Energy harvesting techniques have the potential to enable many cut-ting-edge applications, especially in remote sensing and pervasive computing areas, which can bring innovations in several fields of human activity. In this thesis we contribute tackling some of the numerous open research challenges still hampering the widespread adoption of this technology

    Highlights CNR 2009-2010

    The 2009-2010 edition of CNR.it (the CNR Highlights) includes more than 200 scientific papers. Conceived and written in English to present to the international public the dynamic and multi-sided reality of the largest research organization in Italy, this review is a partial but significant collection of works carried out by CNR researchers and published on the main scientific journals. Articles have been selected on the basis of their impact factors among the 14.000 or so articles produced in the last two years, to present our best image to the world. The present one is only the second of the CNR Highlights, after a first one dedicated to the Italian public, but the series represent already a must for our researchers, to promote their works along best-practice lines followed in research organizations worldwide. In the present edition, with a more catchy new look, articles, images and scientific popularizations provide a broad outlook of the activities of CNR, reporting, side by side with research articles, about technology transfer and scientific support activities to national and local institutions. The 2009-2010 Highlights are divided into four sections, similarly to the previous edition. However, as the reader looks through the pages, the interdisciplinary nature of the works will not pass unnoticed, interdisciplinarity being the peculiar feature of CNR, an organization in which the different disciplines find a fertile breeding ground to communicate and share their different knowledge

    The Largest Unethical Medical Experiment in Human History

    This monograph describes the largest unethical medical experiment in human history: the implementation and operation of non-ionizing non-visible EMF radiation (hereafter called wireless radiation) infrastructure for communications, surveillance, weaponry, and other applications. It is unethical because it violates the key ethical medical experiment requirement for “informed consent” by the overwhelming majority of the participants. The monograph provides background on unethical medical research/experimentation, and frames the implementation of wireless radiation within that context. The monograph then identifies a wide spectrum of adverse effects of wireless radiation as reported in the premier biomedical literature for over seven decades. Even though many of these reported adverse effects are extremely severe, the true extent of their severity has been grossly underestimated. Most of the reported laboratory experiments that produced these effects are not reflective of the real-life environment in which wireless radiation operates. Many experiments do not include pulsing and modulation of the carrier signal, and most do not account for synergistic effects of other toxic stimuli acting in concert with the wireless radiation. These two additions greatly exacerbate the severity of the adverse effects from wireless radiation, and their neglect in current (and past) experimentation results in substantial under-estimation of the breadth and severity of adverse effects to be expected in a real-life situation. This lack of credible safety testing, combined with depriving the public of the opportunity to provide informed consent, contextualizes the wireless radiation infrastructure operation as an unethical medical experiment

    Peer production of Open Hardware: Unfinished artifacts and architectures in the hackerspaces

    The dissertation adopts the theoretical framework of peer production to investigate the phenomena of open collaboration in hacker clubs through two case studies of small scale electronic artefacts. A critique of current theories of peer production is developed from a Science and Technology Studies point of view, arguing for the primacy of social constructivism over technological determinist narratives about the role of ICTs in late capitalism in general and hacker culture in particular. Properties of disruptive novelty and spontaneous emergence routinely attributed to ICTs – and by extension to the peer production practices of hackers – are approached sceptically with a historically informed ethnographic method that concentrates on continuities and contexts.La tesis adopta el marco teórico de la producción entre iguales para investigar los fenómenos de colaboración abierta en los clubs de hackers, a través de dos estudios de caso sobre artefactos electrónicos de pequeña escala. Se desarrolla una crítica de las teorías actuales sobre la producción entre iguales desde el punto de vista de los Estudios de Ciencia y Tecnología, defendiendo la primacía de la visión constructivista social por encima de las narrativas deterministas tecnológicas en el papel de las TIC en el capitalismo tardío, en general, y en la cultura hacker en particular. Nociones como la novedad perturbadora y la aparición espontánea, atribuidas habitualmente a las TIC y, por extensión, a las prácticas de producción entre iguales de los hackers, se tratan con escepticismo mediante un método etnográfico históricamente informado, que se concentra en las continuidades y contextos.La tesi adopta el marc teòric de la producció entre iguals per investigar els fenòmens de col·laboració oberta als clubs de hackers, a través de dos estudis de cas sobre artefactes electrònics de petita escala.
