    The Effect of Corporate Cultural Factors on the Data Warehousing Success: An Empirical Investigation

    This study is aimed at identifying the impact of corporate cultural factors on successful development of data warehousing in the United Arab Emirates. The theoretical framework of the study is formulated based on analysis of related literature coupled with the information gained from interviewing data warehousing experts. Five hundred and eighty data warehouse users in 34 companies were surveyed to obtain their perceptions of the extent that each of 132 items had actually contributed to their firms’ DW success at different phases of development. Rigorous multivariate statistical analysis procedure has been followed to design and construct an overall model of DW success. The model has proven that all its independent variables have significant influence on the DW overall success and that corporate cultural factors have dominant impact on this success throughout the different phases of DW development

    Examining Quality Factors Influencing the Success of Data Warehouse

    Increased organizational dependence on data warehouse (DW) systems has drived the management attention towards improving data warehouse systems to a success. However, the successful implementation rate of the data warehouse systems is low and many firms do not achieve intended goals. A recent study shows that improves and evaluates data warehouse success is one of the top concerns facing IT/DW executives. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research that addresses the issue of the data warehouse systems success. In addition, it is important for organizations to learn about quality needs to be emphasized before the actual data warehouse is built. It is also important to determine what aspects of data warehouse systems success are critical to organizations to help IT/DW executives to devise effective data warehouse success improvement strategies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to further the understanding of the factors which are critical to evaluate the success of data warehouse systems. The study attempted to develop a comprehensive model for the success of data warehouse systems by adapting the updated DeLone and McLean IS Success Model. Researcher models the relationship between the quality factors on the one side and the net benefits of data warehouse on the other side. This study used quantitative method to test the research hypotheses by survey data. The data were collected by using a web-based survey. The sample consisted of 244 members of The Data Warehouse Institution (TDWI) working in variety industries around the world. The questionnaire measured six independent variables and one dependent variable. The independent variables were meant to measure system quality, information quality, service quality, relationship quality, user quality, and business quality. The dependent variable was meant to measure the net benefits of data warehouse systems. Analysis using descriptive analysis, factor analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis resulted in the support of all hypotheses. The research results indicated that there are statistically positive causal relationship between each quality factors and the net benefits of the data warehouse systems. These results imply that the net benefits of the data warehouse systems increases when the overall qualities were increased. Yet, little thought seems to have been given to what the data warehouse success is, what is necessary to achieve the success of data warehouse, and what benefits can be realistically expected. Therefore, it appears nearly certain and plausible that the way data warehouse systems success is implemented in the future could be changed

    A Structural Model of Data Warehousing Success

    Data warehousing is an important area of practice and research, yet few studies have assessed its practices in general and critical success factors in particular. Although plenty of guidelines for implementation exist, few have been subjected to empirical testing. Furthermore, no model is available for comparing and evaluating the various claims made in different studies. In order to better understand the critical success factors and their effects on data warehousing success, a research model is developed in this paper. This model is useful for comparing findings across studies and for selecting variables for future research. The model is tested using data collected from a cross sectional survey of data warehousing professionals. Partial Least Square (PLS) is used to validate the structural relations identified in the model. The resulting model has three groups of success factors. Technical factor is found to positively influence information quality, whereas both operational and economic factors have a positive effect on system quality. Structural relations are also found among the dependent variables. System quality positively influences information quality, which in turn positively affects individual benefits. Individual benefits in turn has a positive relation with organizational benefits

    INFORMATION DISSEMINATION IN SUPPLY CHAIN: FACTORS AND MODELS INFLUENCING WAREHOUSING EFFICIENCY.

    Purpose: Based on relationship-specific perspective and the systems of information dissemination in supply chain, this paper explores how these models facilitate the warehousing efficiency in a company that has more than two suppliers in different countries. The study examines how information flow and functioning supply chain could develop a relationship with suppliers and how those specific models and factors contribute to the firm`s inventory management. Current study is conducted from company’s point of view on supply chain management in comparison to the supplier specific requests for logistics operations. Design/methodology/approach: In order to link theoretical part with empirical research, current study uses exploratory design and due to direct number of survey participants, research method is considered as qualitative survey method with semistructured interviews. Deductive and inductive approaches were applied in the thesis. Findings: The result shows that factors of trust and collaboration along with implementation of information dissemination models between company and suppliers have significant importance in supply chain and might reduce the need for inventory. Improving information flow between parties in supply chain contributes to warehousing efficiency through more frequent deliveries and appropriate logistics planning. Research limitations/implications: Study scope is limited to a single case company as well as from companies’ suppliers were chosen only five operating in different countries. Furthermore, the research focuses on one country of the case company: Finland. However, survey was conducted with suppliers from different countries and different background; the findings cannot be generalized to all the companies working in a wide supply chain.     Systemic capabilities: the source of IT business value

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop, and explicate the significance of the need for a systemic conceptual framework for understanding IT business value. Design/methodology/approach – Embracing a systems perspective, this paper examines the interrelationship between IT and other organisational factors at the organisational level and its impact on the business value of IT. As a result, a systemic conceptual framework for understanding IT business value is developed. An example of enhancing IT business value through developing systemic capabilities is then used to test and demonstrate the value of this framework. Findings – The findings suggest that IT business value would be significantly enhanced when systemic capabilities are generated from the synergistic interrelations among IT and other organisational factors at the systems level, while the system’s human agents play a critical role in developing systemic capabilities by purposely configuring and reconfiguring organisational factors. Practical implications – The conceptual framework advanced provides the means to recognise the significance of the need for understanding IT business value systemically and dynamically. It encourages an organisation to focus on developing systemic capabilities by ensuring that IT and other organisational factors work together as a synergistic whole, better managing the role its human agents play in shaping the systems interrelations, and developing and redeveloping systemic capabilities by configuring its subsystems purposely with the changing business environment. Originality/value – This paper reveals the nature of systemic capabilities underpinned by a systems perspective. The resultant systemic conceptual framework for understanding IT business value can help us move away from pairwise resource complementarity to focusing on the whole system and its interrelations while responding to the changing business environment. It is hoped that the framework can help organisations delineate important IT investment considerations and the priorities that they must adopt to create superior IT business value

    Tone from the Top in Risk Management: A Complementarity Perspective on How Control Systems Influence Risk Awareness

    Prompted by the weaknesses of standardized risk management approaches in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, scholars, regulators, and practitioners alike emphasize the importance of creating a risk-aware culture in organizations. Recent insights highlight the special role of tone from the top as crucial driver of risk awareness. In this study, we take a systems-perspective on control system design to investigate the role of tone from the top in creating risk awareness. In particular, we argue that both interactive and diagnostic use of budgets and performance measures interact with tone from the top in managing risk awareness. Our results show that interactive control strengthens the effect of tone from the top on risk awareness, while tone from the top and diagnostic control are, on average, not interrelated with regard to creating risk awareness. To shed light on the boundary conditions of the proposed interdependencies, we further investigate whether the predicted interdependencies are sensitive to the level of perceived environmental uncertainty. We find that the effect of tone from the top and interactive control becomes significantly stronger in a situation of high perceived environmental uncertainty. Most interestingly, tone from the top and diagnostic control are complements with regard to risk awareness in settings of low perceived environmental uncertainty and substitutes at high levels of perceived environmental uncertainty.Series: Department of Strategy and Innovation Working Paper Serie
