Enumeration Reducibility in Closure Spaces with Applications to Logic and Algebra
In many instances in first order logic or computable algebra, classical
theorems show that many problems are undecidable for general structures, but
become decidable if some rigidity is imposed on the structure. For example, the
set of theorems in many finitely axiomatisable theories is nonrecursive, but
the set of theorems for any finitely axiomatisable complete theory is
recursive. Finitely presented groups might have an nonrecursive word problem,
but finitely presented simple groups have a recursive word problem. In this
article we introduce a topological framework based on closure spaces to show
that many of these proofs can be obtained in a similar setting. We will show in
particular that these statements can be generalized to cover arbitrary
structures, with no finite or recursive presentation/axiomatization. This
generalizes in particular work by Kuznetsov and others. Examples from first
order logic and symbolic dynamics will be discussed at length
Complexity of equivalence relations and preorders from computability theory
We study the relative complexity of equivalence relations and preorders from
computability theory and complexity theory. Given binary relations , a
componentwise reducibility is defined by R\le S \iff \ex f \, \forall x, y \,
[xRy \lra f(x) Sf(y)]. Here is taken from a suitable class of effective
functions. For us the relations will be on natural numbers, and must be
computable. We show that there is a -complete equivalence relation, but
no -complete for .
We show that preorders arising naturally in the above-mentioned
areas are -complete. This includes polynomial time -reducibility
on exponential time sets, which is , almost inclusion on r.e.\ sets,
which is , and Turing reducibility on r.e.\ sets, which is .Comment: To appear in J. Symb. Logi
First-order Nilpotent Minimum Logics: first steps
Following the lines of the analysis done in [BPZ07, BCF07] for first-order
G\"odel logics, we present an analogous investigation for Nilpotent Minimum
logic NM. We study decidability and reciprocal inclusion of various sets of
first-order tautologies of some subalgebras of the standard Nilpotent Minimum
algebra. We establish a connection between the validity in an NM-chain of
certain first-order formulas and its order type. Furthermore, we analyze
axiomatizability, undecidability and the monadic fragments.Comment: In this version of the paper the presentation has been improved. The
introduction section has been rewritten, and many modifications have been
done to improve the readability; moreover, numerous references have been
added. Concerning the technical side, some proofs has been shortened or made
more clear, but the mathematical content is substantially the same of the
previous versio
Computability Theory
Computability is one of the fundamental notions of mathematics, trying to capture the effective content of mathematics. Starting from Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, it has now blossomed into a rich area with strong connections with other areas of mathematical logic as well as algebra and theoretical computer science
Bulking II: Classifications of Cellular Automata
This paper is the second part of a series of two papers dealing with bulking:
a way to define quasi-order on cellular automata by comparing space-time
diagrams up to rescaling. In the present paper, we introduce three notions of
simulation between cellular automata and study the quasi-order structures
induced by these simulation relations on the whole set of cellular automata.
Various aspects of these quasi-orders are considered (induced equivalence
relations, maximum elements, induced orders, etc) providing several formal
tools allowing to classify cellular automata
