    Deaf, Dumb, and Chatting Robots, Enabling Distributed Computation and Fault-Tolerance Among Stigmergic Robot

    We investigate ways for the exchange of information (explicit communication) among deaf and dumb mobile robots scattered in the plane. We introduce the use of movement-signals (analogously to flight signals and bees waggle) as a mean to transfer messages, enabling the use of distributed algorithms among the robots. We propose one-to-one deterministic movement protocols that implement explicit communication. We first present protocols for synchronous robots. We begin with a very simple coding protocol for two robots. Based on on this protocol, we provide one-to-one communication for any system of n \geq 2 robots equipped with observable IDs that agree on a common direction (sense of direction). We then propose two solutions enabling one-to-one communication among anonymous robots. Since the robots are devoid of observable IDs, both protocols build recognition mechanisms using the (weak) capabilities offered to the robots. The first protocol assumes that the robots agree on a common direction and a common handedness (chirality), while the second protocol assumes chirality only. Next, we show how the movements of robots can provide implicit acknowledgments in asynchronous systems. We use this result to design asynchronous one-to-one communication with two robots only. Finally, we combine this solution with the schemes developed in synchronous settings to fit the general case of asynchronous one-to-one communication among any number of robots. Our protocols enable the use of distributing algorithms based on message exchanges among swarms of Stigmergic robots. Furthermore, they provides robots equipped with means of communication to overcome faults of their communication device

    Arbitrary Pattern Formation on a Continuous Circle by Oblivious Robot Swarm

    In the field of distributed system, Arbitrary Pattern Formation (APF) problem is an extensively studied problem. The purpose of APF is to design an algorithm to move a swarm of robots to a particular position on an environment (discrete or continuous) such that the swarm can form a specific but arbitrary pattern given previously to every robot as an input. In this paper the solvability of the APF problem on a continuous circle has been discussed for a swarm of oblivious and silent robots without chirality under a semi synchronous scheduler. Firstly a class of configurations called \textit{Formable Configuration}(FCFC) has been provided which is necessary to solve the APF problem on a continuous circle. Then considering the initial configuration to be an FCFC, an deterministic and distributed algorithm has been provided that solves the APF problem for nn robots on a continuous circle of fixed radius within O(n)O(n) epochs without collision

    Plane Formation by Synchronous Mobile Robots in the Three Dimensional Euclidean Space

    Creating a swarm of mobile computing entities frequently called robots, agents or sensor nodes, with self-organization ability is a contemporary challenge in distributed computing. Motivated by this, we investigate the plane formation problem that requires a swarm of robots moving in the three dimensional Euclidean space to land on a common plane. The robots are fully synchronous and endowed with visual perception. But they do not have identifiers, nor access to the global coordinate system, nor any means of explicit communication with each other. Though there are plenty of results on the agreement problem for robots in the two dimensional plane, for example, the point formation problem, the pattern formation problem, and so on, this is the first result for robots in the three dimensional space. This paper presents a necessary and sufficient condition for fully-synchronous robots to solve the plane formation problem that does not depend on obliviousness i.e., the availability of local memory at robots. An implication of the result is somewhat counter-intuitive: The robots cannot form a plane from most of the semi-regular polyhedra, while they can form a plane from every regular polyhedron (except a regular icosahedron), whose symmetry is usually considered to be higher than any semi-regular polyhedrdon

    Plane Formation by Synchronous Mobile Robots without Chirality

    We consider a distributed system consisting of autonomous mobile computing entities called robots moving in the three-dimensional space (3D-space). The robots are anonymous, oblivious, fully-synchronous and have neither any access to the global coordinate system nor any explicit communication medium. Each robot cooperates with other robots by observing the positions of other robots in its local coordinate system. One of the most fundamental agreement problems in 3D-space is the plane formation problem that requires the robots to land on a common plane, that is not predefined. This problem is not always solvable because of the impossibility of symmetry breaking. While existing results assume that the robots agree on the handedness of their local coordinate systems, we remove the assumption and consider the robots without chirality. The robots without chirality can never break the symmetry consisting of rotation symmetry and reflection symmetry. Such symmetry in 3D-space is fully described by 17 symmetry types each of which forms a group. We extend the notion of symmetricity [Suzuki and Yamashita, SIAM J. Compt. 1999] [Yamauchi et al., PODC 2016] to cover these 17 symmetry groups. Then we give a characterization of initial configurations from which the fully-synchronous robots without chirality can form a plane in terms of symmetricity

    Gathering over Meeting Nodes in Infinite Grid

    The gathering over meeting nodes problem asks the robots to gather at one of the pre-defined meeting nodes. The robots are deployed on the nodes of an anonymous two-dimensional infinite grid which has a subset of nodes marked as meeting nodes. Robots are identical, autonomous, anonymous and oblivious. They operate under an asynchronous scheduler. They do not have any agreement on a global coordinate system. All the initial configurations for which the problem is deterministically unsolvable have been characterized. A deterministic distributed algorithm has been proposed to solve the problem for the remaining configurations. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is studied in terms of the number of moves required for gathering. A lower bound concerning the total number of moves required to solve the gathering problem has been derived

    Oblivious permutations on the plane

    We consider a distributed system of n identical mobile robots operating in the two dimensional Euclidian plane. As in the previous studies, we consider the robots to be anonymous, oblivious, dis-oriented, and without any communication capabilities, operating based on the Look-Compute-Move model where the next location of a robot depends only on its view of the current configuration. Even in this seemingly weak model, most formation problems which require constructing specific configurations, can be solved quite easily when the robots are fully synchronized with each other. In this paper we introduce and study a new class of problems which, unlike the studied formation problems, cannot always be solved even in the fully synchronous model with atomic and rigid moves. This class of problems requires the robots to permute their locations in the plane. In particular, we are interested in implementing two special types of permutations - permutations without any fixed points and permutations of order n. The former (called Move-All) requires each robot to visit at least two of the initial locations, while the latter (called Visit-All) requires every robot to visit each of the initial locations in a periodic manner. We provide a characterization of the solvability of these problems, showing the main challenges in solving this class of problems for mobile robots.
