    Ellipsoidal bounds on state trajectories for discrete-time systems with linear fractional uncertainties

    Computation of exact ellipsoidal bounds on the state trajectories of discrete-time linear systems that have time-varying or time-invariant linear fractional parameter uncertainties and ellipsoidal uncertainty in the initial state is known to be NP-hard. This paper proposes three algorithms to compute ellipsoidal bounds on such a state trajectory set and discusses the tradeoffs between computational complexity and conservatism of the algorithms. The approach employs linear matrix inequalities to determine an initial estimate of the ellipsoid that is refined by the subsequent application of the skewed structured singular value ν. Numerical examples are used to illustrate the application of the proposed algorithms and to compare the differences between them, where small conservatism for the tightest bounds is observed.Institute for Advanced Computing Applications and Technologie

    Scalable tube model predictive control of uncertain linear systems using ellipsoidal sets

    This work proposes a novel robust model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for linear systems affected by dynamic model uncertainty and exogenous disturbances. The uncertainty is modeled using a linear fractional perturbation structure with a time-varying perturbation matrix, enabling the algorithm to be applied to a large model class. The MPC controller constructs a state tube as a sequence of parameterized ellipsoidal sets to bound the state trajectories of the system. The proposed approach results in a semidefinite program to be solved online, whose size scales linearly with the order of the system. The design of the state tube is formulated as an offline optimization problem, which offers flexibility to impose desirable features such as robust invariance on the terminal set. This contrasts with most existing tube MPC strategies using polytopic sets in the state tube, which are difficult to design and whose complexity grows combinatorially with the system order. The algorithm guarantees constraint satisfaction, recursive feasibility, and stability of the closed loop.     Control System Analysis and Synthesis via Linear Matrix Inequalities

    A wide variety of problems in systems and control theory can be cast or recast as convex problems that involve linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). For a few very special cases there are "analytical solutions" to these problems, but in general they can be solved numerically very efficiently. In many cases the inequalities have the form of simultaneous Lyapunov or algebraic Riccati inequalities; such problems can be solved in a time that is comparable to the time required to solve the same number of Lyapunov or Algebraic Riccati equations. Therefore the computational cost of extending current control theory that is based on the solution of algebraic Riccati equations to a theory based on the solution of (multiple, simultaneous) Lyapunov or Riccati inequalities is modest. Examples include: multicriterion LQG, synthesis of linear state feedback for multiple or nonlinear plants ("multi-model control"), optimal transfer matrix realization, norm scaling, synthesis of multipliers for Popov-like analysis of systems with unknown gains, and many others.     Control of Constrained Dynamical Systems with Performance Guarantees: With Application to Vehicle motion Control

    In control engineering, models of the system are commonly used for controller design. A standard control design problem consists of steering the given system output (or states) towards a predefined reference. Such a problem can be solved by employing feedback control strategies. By utilizing the knowledge of the model, these strategies compute the control inputs that shrink the error between the system outputs and their desired references over time. Usually, the control inputs must be computed such that the system output signals are kept in a desired region, possibly due to design or safety requirements. Also, the input signals should be within the physical limits of the actuators. Depending on the constraints, their violation might result in unacceptable system failures (e.g. deadly injury in the worst case). Thus, in safety-critical applications, a controller must be robust towards the modelling uncertainties and provide a priori guarantees for constraint satisfaction. A fundamental tool in constrained control application is the robust control invariant sets (RCI). For a controlled dynamical system, if initial states belong to RCI set, control inputs always exist that keep the future state trajectories restricted within the set. Hence, RCI sets can characterize a system that never violates constraints. These sets are the primary ingredient in the synthesis of the well-known constraint control strategies like model predictive control (MPC) and interpolation-based controller (IBC). Consequently, a large body of research has been devoted to the computation of these sets. In the thesis, we will focus on the computation of RCI sets and the method to generate control inputs that keep the system trajectories within RCI set. We specifically focus on the systems which have time-varying dynamics and polytopic constraints. Depending upon the nature of the time-varying element in the system description (i.e., if they are observable or not), we propose different sets of algorithms.The first group of algorithms apply to the system with time-varying, bounded uncertainties. To systematically handle the uncertainties and reduce conservatism, we exploit various tools from the robust control literature to derive novel conditions for invariance. The obtained conditions are then combined with a newly developed method for volume maximization and minimization in a convex optimization problem to compute desirably large and small RCI sets. In addition to ensuring invariance, it is also possible to guarantee desired closed-loop performance within the RCI set. Furthermore, developed algorithms can generate RCI sets with a predefined number of hyper-planes. This feature allows us to adjust the computational complexity of MPC and IBC controller when the sets are utilized in controller synthesis. Using numerical examples, we show that the proposed algorithms can outperform (volume-wise) many state-of-the-art methods when computing RCI sets.In the other case, we assume the time-varying parameters in system description to be observable. The developed algorithm has many similar characteristics as the earlier case, but now to utilize the parameter information, the control law and the RCI set are allowed to be parameter-dependent. We have numerically shown that the presented algorithm can generate invariant sets which are larger than the maximal RCI sets computed without exploiting parameter information.Lastly, we demonstrate how we can utilize some of these algorithms to construct a computationally efficient IBC controller for the vehicle motion control.     A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers.     LMI techniques for optimization over polynomials in control: A survey

    Numerous tasks in control systems involve optimization problems over polynomials, and unfortunately these problems are in general nonconvex. In order to cope with this difficulty, linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques have been introduced because they allow one to obtain bounds to the sought solution by solving convex optimization problems and because the conservatism of these bounds can be decreased in general by suitably increasing the size of the problems. This survey aims to provide the reader with a significant overview of the LMI techniques that are used in control systems for tackling optimization problems over polynomials, describing approaches such as decomposition in sum of squares, Positivstellensatz, theory of moments, Plya's theorem, and matrix dilation. Moreover, it aims to provide a collection of the essential problems in control systems where these LMI techniques are used, such as stability and performance investigations in nonlinear systems, uncertain systems, time-delay systems, and genetic regulatory networks.     Computational analysis of real-time convex optimization for control systems

Nevertheless, analysis of on-line optimization for control has received little attention to date. On-line software must pass rigorous standards in reliability, requiring that any embedded optimization algorithm possess predictable behavior and bounded run-time guarantees. This thesis examines the problem of certifying control systems which utilize real-time optimization. A general convex programming framework is used, to which primal-dual path-following algorithms are applied. The set of all optimization problem instances which may arise in an on-line procedure is characterized as a compact parametric set of convex programming problems. A method is given for checking the feasibility and well-posedness of this compact set of problems, providing certification that every problem instance has a solution and can be solved in finite time. The thesis then proposes several algorithm initialization methods, considering the fixed and time-varying constraint cases separately. Computational bounds are provided for both cases. In the event that the computational requirements cannot be met, several alternatives to on-line optimization are suggested. Of course, these alternatives must provide feasible solutions with minimal real-time computational overhead. Beyond this requirement, these methods approximate the optimal solution as well as possible. The methods explored include robust table look-up, functional approximation of the solution set, and ellipsoidal approximation of the constraint set. The final part of this thesis examines the coupled behavior of a receding horizon control scheme for constrained linear systems and real-time optimization. The driving requirement is to maintain closed-loop stability, feasibility and well-posedness of the optimal control problem, and bounded iterations for the optimization algorithm. A detailed analysis provides sufficient conditions for meeting these requirements.
