    System design of the MeerKAT L - band 3D radar for monitoring near earth objects

    This thesis investigates the current knowledge of small space debris (diameter less than 10 cm) and potentially hazardous asteroids (PHA) by the use of radar systems. It clearly identifies the challenges involved in detecting and tracking of small space debris and PHAs. The most significant challenges include: difficulty in tracking small space debris due to orbital instability and reduced radar cross-section (RCS), errors in some existing data sets, the lack of dedicated or contributing instruments in the Southern Hemisphere, and the large cost involved in building a high-performance radar for this purpose. This thesis investigates the cooperative use of the KAT-7 (7 antennas) and MeerKAT (64 antennas) radio telescope receivers in a radar system to improve monitoring of small debris and PHAs was investigated using theory and simulations, as a cost-effective solution. Parameters for a low cost and high-performance radar were chosen, based on the receiver digital back-end. Data from such radars will be used to add to existing catalogues thereby creating a constantly updated database of near Earth objects and bridging the data gap that is currently being filled by mathematical models. Based on literature and system requirements, quasi-monostatic, bistatic, multistatic, single input multiple output (SIMO) radar configurations were proposed for radio telescope arrays in detecting, tracking and imaging small space debris in the low Earth orbit (LEO) and PHAs. The maximum dwell time possible for the radar geometry was found to be 30 seconds, with coherent integration limitations of 2 ms and 121 ms for accelerating and non-accelerating targets, respectively. The multistatic and SIMO radar configurations showed sufficient detection (SNR 13 dB) for small debris and quasi-monostatic configuration for PHAs. Radar detection, tracking and imaging (ISAR) simulations were compared to theory and ambiguities in range and Doppler were compensated for. The main contribution made by this work is a system design for a high performance, cost effective 3D radar that uses the KAT-7 and MeerKAT radio telescope receivers in a commensal manner. Comparing theory and simulations, the SNR improvement, dwell time increase, tracking and imaging capabilities, for small debris and PHAs compared to existing assets, was illustrated. Since the MeerKAT radio telescope is a precursor for the SKA Africa, extrapolating the capabilities of the MeerKAT radar to the SKA radar implies that it would be the most sensitive and high performing contributor to space situational awareness, upon its completion. From this feasibility study, the MeerKAT 3D distributed radar will be able to detect debris of diameter less than 10 cm at altitudes between 700 km to 900 km, and PHAs, with a range resolution of 15 m, a minimum SNR of 14 dB for 152 pulses for a coherent integration time of 2.02 ms. The target range (derived from the two way delay), velocity (from Doppler frequency) and direction will be measured within an accuracy of: 2.116 m, 15.519 m/s, 0.083° (single antenna), respectively. The range, velocity accuracies and SNR affect orbit prediction accuracy by 0.021 minutes for orbit period and 0.0057° for orbit inclination. The multistatic radar was found to be the most suitable and computationally efficient configuration compared to the bistatic and SIMO configurations, and beamforming should be implemented as required by specific target geometry

    Pre-Trained Driving in Localized Surroundings with Semantic Radar Information and Machine Learning

    Entlang der Signalverarbeitungskette von Radar Detektionen bis zur Fahrzeugansteuerung, diskutiert diese Arbeit eine semantischen Radar Segmentierung, einen darauf aufbauenden Radar SLAM, sowie eine im Verbund realisierte autonome Parkfunktion. Die Radarsegmentierung der (statischen) Umgebung wird durch ein Radar-spezifisches neuronales Netzwerk RadarNet erreicht. Diese Segmentierung ermöglicht die Entwicklung des semantischen Radar Graph-SLAM SERALOC. Auf der Grundlage der semantischen Radar SLAM Karte wird eine beispielhafte autonome Parkfunktionalität in einem realen Versuchsträger umgesetzt. Entlang eines aufgezeichneten Referenzfades parkt die Funktion ausschließlich auf Basis der Radar Wahrnehmung mit bisher unerreichter Positioniergenauigkeit. Im ersten Schritt wird ein Datensatz von 8.2 · 10^6 punktweise semantisch gelabelten Radarpunktwolken über eine Strecke von 2507.35m generiert. Es sind keine vergleichbaren Datensätze dieser Annotationsebene und Radarspezifikation öffentlich verfügbar. Das überwachte Training der semantischen Segmentierung RadarNet erreicht 28.97% mIoU auf sechs Klassen. Außerdem wird ein automatisiertes Radar-Labeling-Framework SeRaLF vorgestellt, welches das Radarlabeling multimodal mittels Referenzkameras und LiDAR unterstützt. Für die kohärente Kartierung wird ein Radarsignal-Vorfilter auf der Grundlage einer Aktivierungskarte entworfen, welcher Rauschen und andere dynamische Mehrwegreflektionen unterdrückt. Ein speziell für Radar angepasstes Graph-SLAM-Frontend mit Radar-Odometrie Kanten zwischen Teil-Karten und semantisch separater NDT Registrierung setzt die vorgefilterten semantischen Radarscans zu einer konsistenten metrischen Karte zusammen. Die Kartierungsgenauigkeit und die Datenassoziation werden somit erhöht und der erste semantische Radar Graph-SLAM für beliebige statische Umgebungen realisiert. Integriert in ein reales Testfahrzeug, wird das Zusammenspiel der live RadarNet Segmentierung und des semantischen Radar Graph-SLAM anhand einer rein Radar-basierten autonomen Parkfunktionalität evaluiert. Im Durchschnitt über 42 autonome Parkmanöver (∅3.73 km/h) bei durchschnittlicher Manöverlänge von ∅172.75m wird ein Median absoluter Posenfehler von 0.235m und End-Posenfehler von 0.2443m erreicht, der vergleichbare Radar-Lokalisierungsergebnisse um ≈ 50% übertrifft. Die Kartengenauigkeit von veränderlichen, neukartierten Orten über eine Kartierungsdistanz von ∅165m ergibt eine ≈ 56%-ige Kartenkonsistenz bei einer Abweichung von ∅0.163m. Für das autonome Parken wurde ein gegebener Trajektorienplaner und Regleransatz verwendet

    Pointing, Acquisition, and Tracking Systems for Free-Space Optical Communication Links

    Pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) systems have been widely applied in many applications, from short-range (e.g. human motion tracking) to long-haul (e.g. missile guidance) systems. This dissertation extends the PAT system into new territory: free space optical (FSO) communication system alignment, the most important missing ingredient for practical deployment. Exploring embedded geometric invariances intrinsic to the rigidity of actuators and sensors is a key design feature. Once the configuration of the actuator and sensor is determined, the geometric invariance is fixed, which can therefore be calibrated in advance. This calibrated invariance further serves as a transformation for converting the sensor measurement to actuator action. The challenge of the FSO alignment problem lies in how to point to a 3D target by only using a 2D sensor. Two solutions are proposed: the first one exploits the invariance, known as the linear homography, embedded in the FSO applications which involve long link length between transceivers or have planar trajectories. The second one employs either an additional 2D or 1D sensor, which results in invariances known as the trifocal tensor and radial trifocal tensor, respectively. Since these invariances have been developed upon an assumption that the measurements from sensors are free from noise, including the uncertainty resulting from aberrations, a robust calibrate algorithm is required to retrieve the optimal invariance from noisy measurements. The first solution is suffcient for most of the PAT systems used for FSO alignment since a long link length constraint is generally the case. Although PAT systems are normally categorized into coarse and fine subsystems to deal with different requirements, they are proven to be governed by a linear homography. Robust calibration algorithms have been developed during this work and further verified by simulations. Two prototype systems have been developed: one serves as a fine pointing subsystem, which consists of a beam steerer and an angular resolver; while the other serves as a coarse pointing subsystem, which consists of a rotary gimbal and a camera. The average pointing errors in both prototypes were less than 170 and 700 micro-rads, respectively. PAT systems based on the second solution are capable of pointing to any target within the intersected field-of-view from both sensors because two sensors provide stereo vision to determine the depth of the target, the missing information that cannot be determined by a 2D sensor. They are only required when short-distance FSO communication links must be established.     Diese Arbeit präsentiert eine empirische Untersuchung der Wellenausbreitung für drahtlose Kommunikation im Millimeterwellen- und sub-THz-Band, wobei als Referenz das bereits bekannte und untersuchte sub-6-GHz-Band verwendet wird. Die großen verfügbaren Bandbreiten in diesen hohen Frequenzbändern erlauben die Verwendung hoher instantaner Bandbreiten zur Erfüllung der wesentlichen Anforderungen zukünftiger Mobilfunktechnologien (5G, “5G and beyond” und 6G). Aufgrund zunehmender Pfad- und Eindringverluste bei zunehmender Trägerfrequenz ist die resultierende Abdeckung dabei jedoch stark reduziert. Die entstehenden Pfadverluste können durch die Verwendung hochdirektiver Funkschnittstellen kompensiert werden, wodurch die resultierende Auflösung im Winkelbereich erhöht wird und die Notwendigkeit einer räumlichen Kenntnis der Systeme mit sich bringt: Woher kommt das Signal? Darüber hinaus erhöhen größere Anwendungsbandbreiten die Auflösung im Zeitbereich, reduzieren das small-scale Fading und ermöglichen die Untersuchung innerhalb von Clustern von Mehrwegekomponenten. Daraus ergibt sich für Kommunikationssysteme ein vorhersagbareres Bild im Winkel-, Zeit- und Polarisationsbereich, welches Eigenschaften sind, die in Kanalmodellen für diese Frequenzen widergespiegelt werden müssen. Aus diesem Grund wurde in der vorliegenden Arbeit eine umfassende Charakterisierung der Wellenausbreitung durch simultane Multibandmessungen in den sub-6 GHz-, Millimeterwellen- und sub-THz-Bändern vorgestellt. Zu Beginn wurde die Eignung des simultanen Multiband-Messverfahrens zur Charakterisierung der Ausbreitung von Grenzwert-Leistungsprofilen und large-scale Parametern bewertet. Anschließend wurden wichtige Wellenausbreitungsaspekte für die Ein- und Multibandkanalmodellierung innerhalb mehrerer Säulen der 5G-Technologie identifiziert und Erweiterungen zu verbreiteten räumlichen Kanalmodellen eingeführt und bewertet, welche die oben genannten Systemaspekte abdecken.This thesis presents an empirical characterization of propagation for wireless communications at mm-waves and sub-THz, taking as a reference the already well known and studied sub-6 GHz band. The large blocks of free spectrum available at these high frequency bands makes them particularly suitable to provide the necessary instantaneous bandwidths to meet the requirements of future wireless technologies (5G, 5G and beyond, and 6G). However, isotropic path-loss and penetration-loss are larger with increasing carrier frequency, hence, coverage is severely reduced. Path-loss can be compensated with the utilization of highly directive radio-interfaces, which increases the resolution in the angular domain. Nonetheless, this emphasizes the need of spatial awareness of systems, making more relevant the question “where does the signal come from?” In addition, larger application bandwidths increase the resolution in the time domain, reducing small-scale fading and allowing to observe inside of clusters of multi-path components (MPCs). Consequently, communication systems have a more deterministic picture of the environment in the angular, time, and polarization domain, characteristics that need to be reflected in channel models for these frequencies. Therefore, in the present work we introduce an extensive characterization of propagation by intensive simultaneous multi-band measurements in the sub-6 GHz, mm-waves, and sub-THz bands. Firstly, the suitability of the simultaneous multi-band measurement procedure to characterize propagation from marginal power profiles and large-scale parameters (LSPs) has been evaluated. Then, key propagation aspects for single and multi-band channel modelling in several verticals of 5G have been identified, and extensions to popular spatial channel models (SCMs) covering the aforementioned system aspects have been introduced and evaluated
