    Collection Development of Electronic Information Resources in Turkish University Libraries

    The number of information sources available through both printed and electronic media are ever increasing. Even libraries with sizable collection development budgets are having difficulties in coping with this increase. Yet with the development of new technologies, the possibilities of innovative interlibrary cooperation projects emerge: libraries combining their efforts through various consortia are trying to get access to electronic information sources more economically. In this paper, we briefly review the state-of-the-art of Turkish university libraries and summarize the efforts to set up a university library consortium to provide consortial access to electronic information sources and services. We discuss some of the causes which are delaying the establishment of such a consortium

    Report of the Electronic Information Resources Task Force of the University of Rhode Island Libraries. The report outlined a set of twelve recommendations related to Web-based access to electronic indexes and journals. The charge to the task force was the following: Evaluate the range of the electronic information and delivery mechanisms relevant to the programs of the University of Rhode Island; Identify means to provide access to relevant electronic journals; Develop a plan for implementing new resources and/or changing the configuration of existing resources; Develop a working strategy and plan for integrating traditional library resources with electronic resources. Work with colleagues in academic computing and the colleges to facilitate student and faculty understanding and utilization of the Internet and the World Wide Web; Develop instructional methods for teaching students about information resources on the Internet and through the World Wide Web

    EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIGITAL LITERACY AND ELECTRONIC INFORMATION RESOURCES USE AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT OF GOMBE STATE UNIVERSITY

    This study examined the relationship between digital literacy and electronic information resources use among undergraduate students of Gombe State University in Nigeria. The study sought to find level of digital literacy, level of electronic information resources use and determine the relationship between digital literacy and electronic information resources use among undergraduate students in Gombe State University. The study adopted a quantitative using survey design. The study found that the level of digital literacy is high. The also result revealed low extent of EIRs use and the study finally found that there is no significant relationship between digital literacy and electronic information resource use among undergraduate students in Gombe State University. The study concludes that there is no significant relationship between digital literacy and electronic information resource use among undergraduate students in Gombe State University. The study finally, recommend that Undergraduate students should sustain their digital literacy skills in order to reach the highest level of digital literacy. Undergraduate students should integrate their digital literacy skills into electronic information resources use. Undergraduate students should be encouraged to use electronic information resources to improve their extent of electronic information resources use

    Comparing the use of electronic information resources by lecturers in Babcock University and Tai Solarin University of Education in Ogun State, Nigeria.

    There is no doubt that the utilization of electronic information resources has proven to be a more reliable means of meeting information needs of various lecturers and students in Nigerian universities. This study compared the utilization of electronic information resources in Babcock University and Tai Solarin University of Education in Ogun state. A cross sectional survey was carried out on a sample of 264 lecturers using a questionnaire. The study found that there was a significant difference in the utilization of electronic information resources by lecturers in Babcock University and Tai Solarin University of Education. The utilization of search engines by the lecturers was more in Babcock University and Tai Solarin University of Education. Institutional repositories were least utilized by the lecturers in these two Universities. It was concluded that lecturers should be made aware of the existence of all these electronic information resources. The study recommended that training should be provided to the lecturers on the skills to utilization these electronic information resources

    Availability, Accessibility, and Use of Electronic Information Resources for Research by Students in Francis Sulemanu Idachaba Library University of Agriculture, Makurdi

    ABSTRACT: The study investigated availability, accessibility and use of electronic information resources for research by students in Francis Sulemanu Idachaba Library University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. The study looked at the types of electronic information resources available for research by students, extent of availability, accessibility and utilization of the available electronic information resources for research as well as problems encountered by students while accessing and utilizing the available electronic information resources for research by students. Five (5) objectives with corresponding research questions guided the study. The study adopted a survey research design, the population of the study was 7952 registered users (students) of the library. The sample for the study was 381 students registered users of the library who were sampled using simple random sampling technique. Two instruments were used for data collection titled “Checklist on Availability of Electronic Information Resources for Research by Students (CAEIRRS)” and “Accessibility and Utilization of Electronic Information Resources for Research by Students Questionnaire (QUEIRRSQ)” which was validated by two experts. The reliability of the questionnaire was established using Cronbach Alpha method and a reliability coefficient of 0.765 was obtained. Data was collected and analyzed using frequency counts, simple percentages and means to answer the research questions. Findings of the study revealed that, e-journals, e-newspapers, Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), CD-Rom database, e-magazines, e-books, online database, e-research reports, virtual library online, science direct online and Ebscohost reference databases were the types of electronic information resources available for research by students in Francis Sulemanu Idachaba Library. Findings also revealed that, electronic information resources mentioned above were available for research by students to a great extent. Also, it is revealed from the findings that, the extent of accessibility and utilization of the availability electronic information resources for research by students is great. Findings further revealed that, inadequate computers in the library, poor internet connectivity limited subscribed titles, power outages, difficulty to access and use, lack of relevant e-resources in various disciplines as well as no assistance from the library, were the problems encountered by students while accessing and using electronic information resources for research in Francis Sulemanu Idachaba Library University of Agriculture, Makurdi. It was recommended that the University administrators and library management should improve on the bandwidth and enhance the internet connectivity so as to enable the students have easy access to online e-resources. Also, trained personnel should be on ground to assist the students in the use of the available e-resources in the University library and appropriate user education should be organized for students for better use of e-resources in Francis Sulemanu Idachaba Library, university of Agriculture, Makurdi
