Analysing Temporal Relations – Beyond Windows, Frames and Predicates
This article proposes an approach to rely on the standard
operators of relational algebra (including grouping and ag-
gregation) for processing complex event without requiring
window specifications. In this way the approach can pro-
cess complex event queries of the kind encountered in appli-
cations such as emergency management in metro networks.
This article presents Temporal Stream Algebra (TSA) which
combines the operators of relational algebra with an analy-
sis of temporal relations at compile time. This analysis de-
termines which relational algebra queries can be evaluated
against data streams, i. e. the analysis is able to distinguish
valid from invalid stream queries. Furthermore the analysis
derives functions similar to the pass, propagation and keep
invariants in Tucker's et al. \Exploiting Punctuation Seman-
tics in Continuous Data Streams". These functions enable
the incremental evaluation of TSA queries, the propagation
of punctuations, and garbage collection. The evaluation of
TSA queries combines bulk-wise and out-of-order processing
which makes it tolerant to workload bursts as they typically
occur in emergency management. The approach has been
conceived for efficiently processing complex event queries on
top of a relational database system. It has been deployed
and tested on MonetDB
Efficient query processing over uncertain road networks
One of the fundamental problems on spatial road networks has been the shortest traveling time query, with applications such as location-based services (LBS) and trip planning. Algorithms have been made for the shortest time queries in deterministic road networks, in which vertices and edges are known with certainty. Emerging technologies are available and make it easier to acquire information about the traffic. In this paper, we consider uncertain road networks, in which speeds of vehicles are imprecise and probabilistic. We will focus on one important query type, continuous probabilistic shortest traveling time query (CPSTTQ), which retrieves sets of objects that have the smallest traveling time to a moving query point q from point s to point e on road networks with high confidences. We propose effective pruning methods to prune the search space of our CPSTTQ query, and design an efficient query procedure to answer CPSTTQ via an index structure

In the past decade, positioning system-enabled devices such as smartphones have become most prevalent. This functionality brings the increasing popularity of
location-based services
in business as well as daily applications such as navigation, targeted advertising, and location-based social networking.
Continuous spatial queries
serve as a building block for location-based services. As an example, an Uber driver may want to be kept aware of the nearest customers or service stations. Continuous spatial queries require updates to the query result as the query or data objects are moving. This poses challenges to the query efficiency, which is crucial to the user experience of a service. A large number of approaches address this efficiency issue using the concept of
safe region
. A safe region is a region within which arbitrary movement of an object leaves the query result unchanged. Such a region helps reduce the frequency of query result update and hence improves query efficiency. As a result, safe region-based approaches have been popular for processing various types of continuous spatial queries. Safe regions have interesting theoretical properties and are worth in-depth analysis. We provide a comparative study of safe region-based approaches. We describe how safe regions are computed for different types of continuous spatial queries, showing how they improve query efficiency. We compare the different safe region-based approaches and discuss possible further improvements
Efficient notification of meeting points for moving groups via independent safe regions
In applications like social networking services and online games, multiple moving users form a group and wish to be continuously notified with the best meeting point from their locations. To reduce the communication frequency of the application server, a promising technique is to apply safe regions, which capture the validity of query results with respect to the users' locations. Unfortunately, the safe regions in our problem exhibit characteristics such as irregular shapes and dependency among multiple safe regions. These unique characteristics render existing safe region methods that focus on a single safe region inapplicable to our problem. To tackle these challenges, we first examine the shapes of safe regions in our problem context and propose feasible approximations for them. We design efficient algorithms for computing these safe regions, as well as develop compression techniques for representing safe regions in a compact manner. Experiments with both real and synthetic data demonstrate the efficiency of our proposal in terms of computation and communication costs. © 2013 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Reverse k Nearest Neighbor Search over Trajectories
GPS enables mobile devices to continuously provide new opportunities to
improve our daily lives. For example, the data collected in applications
created by Uber or Public Transport Authorities can be used to plan
transportation routes, estimate capacities, and proactively identify low
coverage areas. In this paper, we study a new kind of query-Reverse k Nearest
Neighbor Search over Trajectories (RkNNT), which can be used for route planning
and capacity estimation. Given a set of existing routes DR, a set of passenger
transitions DT, and a query route Q, a RkNNT query returns all transitions that
take Q as one of its k nearest travel routes. To solve the problem, we first
develop an index to handle dynamic trajectory updates, so that the most
up-to-date transition data are available for answering a RkNNT query. Then we
introduce a filter refinement framework for processing RkNNT queries using the
proposed indexes. Next, we show how to use RkNNT to solve the optimal route
planning problem MaxRkNNT (MinRkNNT), which is to search for the optimal route
from a start location to an end location that could attract the maximum (or
minimum) number of passengers based on a pre-defined travel distance threshold.
Experiments on real datasets demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of our
approaches. To the best of our best knowledge, this is the first work to study
