Recently the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) produced a consensus report on the standing, and the editorial policies and practices of historical journals published in South Africa, including our predecessor, the Journal for Contemporary History. The findings and recommendations of this report, to be published soon on the ASSAf website, vindicate the decision that we took last year to introduce our editorial changes at one go, rather than making piecemeal changes. Our “new broom” approach meant that we did struggle to assemble an issue in December 2019 with a sufficient number of good quality historical pieces. However, the success of our first issue, founded -we believe – on a clear editorial vision and some very good articles which showcased a diversity of historicalscholarship drawn from across the continent, meant that we have received far more submissions for this issue. Then in March, as the covid-19 pandemic arrived, South Africa entered a hard lockdown and universities closed. I must thank our authors and reviewers, and also the editorial collective and production staff for their role in putting together this issue under the most trying circumstances

This article explores Pangudarasa’s editorial texts in the Panjebar Semangat magazine by using a systemic theory of functional linguistics particularly an appraisal analysis of texts. The objectives of this research are (1) to identify the appraisal tools in Pangudarasa’s editorial texts in a Javanese magazine called Panjebar Semangat, and (2) to describe the perceptions of Pangudarasa’s editorial text writers in the Panjebar Semangat magazine. This descriptive qualitative research used a qualitative method along with a content analysis platform. The data pertaining to words, phrases, clauses, and sentences coincided with appraisal tools. The data source was derived from the Panjebar Semangat magazine, which was published on December 21, 2019 entitled Kasus Garuda, Wanci Kang Pas Kanggo Ngresiki BUMN. The data analysis used a method of referential matching tools to determine a phenomenon beyond the language. The results of data analysis show that (1) appraisal tools in the editorial texts of Pangudarasa in the Panjebar Semangat magazine dominantly present appreciation (42.55%), judgment (36.17%) and affect (21.28%), and (2) the pattern of writers' perceptions to support the Minister Erick Thohir's decision in handling the Garuda Airlines case. This support is reinforced by the use of language functions to influence others by assessing a case directly and authors of editorial texts have a tendency to tell sensitive things or issues mainly concerned with events in the community

The output is a creative project called ‘Eye Eye’ consisting of a series of largescale printed textile and paper works. The project was a collaboration between textile designer Slater and visual artist, Mawuena Kattah. Both artists responded to shared connections in their practices, of pattern and textiles, image making, and narrative found in family and personal iconography. Research process: Initial inquiry was undertaken at The Whitworth Wallpaper and Textile Collection. Ideas were developed using textile and print as accessible and democratic processes. Slater and Kattah questioned the nuances between artist and designer, drawing upon their shared methods and tools. Their collaborative approach to making, drawing and image development challenged the function of the studio and the factory. Research insights: The notion of collaboration was questioned in relation to the roles of artist and designer. The dichotomy of studio and commercial practice was challenged within the context of textiles. Collaboration is important in keeping work relevant and innovative whilst sustaining the longevity of the creative economy. Through the project, Slater and Kattah argue that the design industry needs to acknowledge practitioners that come through alternative routes to practice. Dissemination: The project was disseminated at the following: Exhibition: ‘Eye Eye’ - Colours May Vary, Leeds, 15-30 November 2019. Seminar: ‘PROCESS I PATTERN I PRINT I PURPOSE’ The Whitworth Study Centre, Design Manchester, 16 November 2019. Seminar: ‘Archives and Collections- Design in a Gallery Context’, The Hepworth Wakefield- 14th December 2019. Editorial: ‘Together in Print’ by Jake Kennedy, Editorial Pressing Matters Magazine, November 2019. Exhibition: Collect, Crafts Council, Somerset House, 25th February- 1st March 2020. Acquisition: V&A Textile Collection, ‘Eyes’ (Pink) and Screen-Printed Linen, November 2019, Laura Slater & Mawuena Kattah

Mentoring is an intellectual pillar of ethnobiology

    Get PDF
Ethnobiology relies on community partnerships and relationships between elders or other knowledge keepers and students. Our Society of Ethnobiology, like all academic organizations, has its own issues with discrimination and abuses of power. But more than other academic disciplines, contemporary ethnobiology is practiced with and strengthened by close, respectful working relationships. As such, we offer our thoughts on the lessons ethnobiology brings to mentorship and accountability while outlining some of the specific steps we are taking as an academic and practicing community.Published versio
