    Numerical modeling of the environment impact of landfill leachate leakage on groundwater quality-A field application

    There are more than 372 big uncontrolled landfill areas in China. Waste disposal facilities are mainly responsible for the gradual quality degradation of groundwater. This paper reports an integrated study undertaken to develop an environmental assessment of the uncontrolled sanitary landfill area of the city of Jiaxing, Zhejiang, China. The USGS modular 3D finite difference groundwater flow model (Mod- flow) and Modular 3D Finite Difference Mass Transport Model (MT3D) software were used to simulate groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling. The results indicated that landfill leachate leakage has significant effect on groundwater quality

    Detection of Microcystin-Producing Cyanobacteria in a Reservoir by Whole Cell Quantitative PCR

    AbstractCyanobacterial blooms are of increasing concern due to their negative impacts on environment and cyanobacteria-producing cyanotoxins, which create serious threats to animal and human health. Early detection of the harmful cyanotoxin-producing cyanobacteria is vital for the water management. In this study, we compared the amplification specificity for microcystin-producing cyanobacteria with primers targeting 16S rRNA genes, phycocyanin operon, and regions of mcy gene clusters. To detect presence of microcystin-producing cyanobacteria in a drinking water sourced reservoir, whole cell PCR assay was performed to amplify partial mcyA, mcyE, and the results were compared with that of direct microscopic counts based on morphologic identification. The positive liner correlation of the Microcystis colony by microscopic counts with mcyA containing cell, which was quantified by whole cell quantitative RT-PCR assay, was further confirmed. The results indicated that the microcystin-producer in the reservoir was mainly Microcystis. Therefore, we provided a simple, rapid, sensitive and applicable method for early detection of toxic cyanobacteria

    Multimodal Spatial Calibration for Accurately Registering EEG Sensor Positions

    This paper proposes a fast and accurate calibration method to calibrate multiple multimodal sensors using a novel photogrammetry system for fast localization of EEG sensors. The EEG sensors are placed on human head and multimodal sensors are installed around the head to simultaneously obtain all EEG sensor positions. A multiple views’ calibration process is implemented to obtain the transformations of multiple views. We first develop an efficient local repair algorithm to improve the depth map, and then a special calibration body is designed. Based on them, accurate and robust calibration results can be achieved. We evaluate the proposed method by corners of a chessboard calibration plate. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve good performance, which can be further applied to EEG source localization applications on human brain

    An analysis of coupling coordination relationship between regional economy and transportation: empirical evidence from China

    The increasing discrepancy between a regional economy and transportation imposes higher requirements for their coordinated development. This paper utilized the coupling coordination degree (CCD) model and entropy method (EM) to quantitatively study the coupling coordination state between regional economy and transportation and its spatial distribution of 30 provinces in China from 2004 to 2017. The results show the following: (1) The comprehensive level of regional economy and transportation development in China has shown a growing trend, and the development of regional economy is faster than that of the transportation. (2) The CCD between regional economy and transportation in China is changing from incoordination to high-level coordination. The imbalance of CCD levels among the regions studied varies significantly. The CCD in the eastern regions is slightly higher than that in the central, western, and northeast regions. (3) In the region with a higher CCD, the discrepancy between the development of regional economy and transportation is higher than that in other regions. Moreover, suggestions are provided to promote the coordinated development from a regional perspective. This study provides references to policymakers to help them properly plan and design transportation systems while considering the regional economy, thus stimulating the coordinated and sustainable development between regional economy and transportation

    Raspberry Pi Based Intelligent Wireless Sensor Node for Localized Torrential Rain Monitoring

    Wireless sensor networks are proved to be effective in long-time localized torrential rain monitoring. However, the existing widely used architecture of wireless sensor networks for rain monitoring relies on network transportation and back-end calculation, which causes delay in response to heavy rain in localized areas. Our work improves the architecture by applying logistic regression and support vector machine classification to an intelligent wireless sensor node which is created by Raspberry Pi. The sensor nodes in front-end not only obtain data from sensors, but also can analyze the probabilities of upcoming heavy rain independently and give early warnings to local clients in time. When the sensor nodes send the probability to back-end server, the burdens of network transport are released. We demonstrate by simulation results that our sensor system architecture has potentiality to increase the local response to heavy rain. The monitoring capacity is also raised

    The Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform Based Statistical Medical Image Fusion Using Generalized Gaussian Density

    We propose a novel medical image fusion scheme based on the statistical dependencies between coefficients in the nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) domain, in which the probability density function of the NSCT coefficients is concisely fitted using generalized Gaussian density (GGD), as well as the similarity measurement of two subbands is accurately computed by Jensen-Shannon divergence of two GGDs. To preserve more useful information from source images, the new fusion rules are developed to combine the subbands with the varied frequencies. That is, the low frequency subbands are fused by utilizing two activity measures based on the regional standard deviation and Shannon entropy and the high frequency subbands are merged together via weight maps which are determined by the saliency values of pixels. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms the conventional NSCT based medical image fusion approaches in both visual perception and evaluation indices

    Integration of differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar and persistent scatterer interferometric approaches to assess deformation in enshi city, hubei, China

    Land surface deformation can severely damage socioeconomic living conditions around the world. This study aimed to identify the Shaziba landslide and further assess deformation activities in Enshi city. For this purpose, the sentinel-1 C-bands data acquired in ascending directions were processed with Sentinel Application Platform and Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers (StaMPS) software packages. Our results revealed the location of a landslide that occurred on 21 July 2020 in the Shaziba area, Enshi Prefecture. More interesting deformation results were found in Enshi city for the first time with a deformation range from −51.6 to 54.2 mm/year. We conducted a thorough observation of different urban infrastructures such as commercial and residential buildings, roads, bridges, and airports in Enshi city and along the Qingjiang River to evaluate land surface deformation. Observations revealed that there are a number of influencing factors contributing to disturbing the natural environment and resources in Enshi Prefecture. Of these influencing factors, intensive rainfall is a major cause as are the infiltration of rainfall into the subsurface Silurian strata together with the load of infrastructure in the study area. If this issue is not addressed it could lead to devastating geo-hazard disasters in the future. Scientific approaches to determine various causes of frequent geo-hazards in this region are of great significance for developing early warning systems for disasters and ensuring the safety of residents’ lives and property
