Thermoelectric figure of merit of tau-type conductors of several donors

Dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit ZTZT is investigated for two-dimensional organic conductors τ−(EDO−S,S−DMEDT−TTF)2(AuI2)1+y\tau-(EDO-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}, τ\tau-(EDT-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}and and \tau−(P−S,S−DMEDT−TTF)2(AuI2)1+y-(P-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y} (y≤0.875y \le 0.875), respectively. The ZTZT values were estimated by measuring electrical resistivity, thermopower and thermal conductivity simultaneously. The largest ZTZT is 2.7 ×\times 10−2^{-2} at 155 K for τ−(EDT−S,S−DMEDT−TTF)2(AuI2)1+y\tau-(EDT-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}, 1.5 ×\times 10−2^{-2} at 180 K for τ−(EDO−S,S−DMEDT−TTF)2(AuI2)1+y\tau-(EDO-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y} and 5.4 ×\times 10−3^{-3} at 78 K for τ−(P−S,S−DMEDT−TTF)2(AuI2)1+y\tau-(P-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuI_2)_{1+y}, respectively. Substitution of the donor molecules fixing the counter anion revealed EDT-S,S-DMEDT-TTF is the best of the three donors to obtain larger ZTZT.Comment: proceedings of ISCOM 2009 (to be published in Physica B

Emergency department thoracotomy for the critically injured patient: Objectives, indications, and outcomes

    Get PDF
In the past three decades there has been a significant clinical shift in the performance of emergency department thoracotomy (EDT), from a nearly obligatory procedure before declaring any trauma patient to select patients undergoing EDT. The value of EDT in resuscitation of the patient in profound shock but not yet dead is unquestionable. Its indiscriminate use, however, renders it a low-yield and high-cost procedure. Overall analysis of the available literature indicates that the success of EDT approximates 35% in the patient arriving in shock with a penetrating cardiac wound, and 15% for all penetrating wounds. Conversely, patient outcome is relatively poor when EDT is done for blunt trauma; 2% survival in patients in shock and less than 1% survival with no vital signs. Patients undergoing CPR upon arrival to the emergency department should be stratified based upon injury and transport time to determine the utility of EDT. The optimal application of EDT requires a thorough understanding of its physiologic objectives, technical maneuvers, and the cardiovascular and metabolic consequences

Overparenting, Emotional Distress, and Subjective Well-Being: Facets of Emotional Distress Tolerance as Mediators

Overparenting (OP) has been characterized by parental behaviors that encroach upon children’s ability to develop age-appropriate, autonomous emotional responses and behaviors. OP has been associated with poor mental health, decreased subjective well-being (SWB), and decreased emotional distress tolerance (EDT) in the emerging adult population. The present study investigated relationships between OP, EDT, emotional distress, and SWB. Additionally, the mediating role of EDT, as well as the parallel mediating roles of EDT facets (i.e., appraisal, absorption, tolerance, regulation), were assessed between OP and emotional distress, as well as SWB. Participants included 313 undergraduate psychology students from a mid-sized university in the southeastern United States. Demographic information was gathered, as well as information involving participants’ perceptions of parental involvement and self-reports of emotional distress, SWB, and EDT. In bivariate analyses, OP shared significant, negative associations with EDT, appraisal, tolerance, regulation, while reflecting a significant, positive association with emotional distress. SWB also shared significant, positive relationships with the higher-order construct of EDT, as well as distinct EDT facets, while sharing a significant, negative relationship with emotional distress within the bivariate analyses. While multivariate models did not suggest OP as a predictor of higher-order EDT or its facets, the current findings indicate that OP may be predictive of emotional distress when accounting for reported perceived parental involvement. Furthermore, the present study shows that EDT, as well as two facets of EDT (i.e., appraisal, absorption), may predict emotional distress and SWB when accounting for perceived parental involvement

Hydrogenase biomimetics with redox-active ligands: Electrocatalytic proton reduction by [Fe2(CO)4(κ2-diamine)(μ-edt)] (diamine = 2,2′-bipy, 1,10-phen)

Diiron complexes bearing redox active diamine ligands have been studied as models of the active site of [FeFe]-hydrogenases. Heating [Fe2(CO)6(μ-edt)] (edt = 1,2-ethanedithiolate) with 2,2′-bipyridine (2,2′-bipy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen) in MeCN in the presence of Me3NO leads to the formation of [Fe2(CO)4(κ2-2,2′-bipy)(μ-edt)] (1-edt) and [Fe2(CO)4(κ2-1,10-phen)(μ-edt)] (2-edt), respectively, in moderate yields. In the solid state the diamine resides in dibasal sites, while both dibasal and apical–basal isomers are present in solution. Both stereoisomers protonate readily upon addition of strong acids. Cyclic voltammetry in MeCN shows that both complexes undergo irreversible oxidation and reduction, proposed to be a one- and two-electron process, respectively. The structures of neutral 2-edt and its corresponding one- and two-electron reduced species have been investigated by DFT calculations. In 2-edt− the added electron occupies a predominantly ligand-based orbital, and the iron–iron bond is maintained, being only slightly elongated. Addition of the second electron affords an open-shell triplet dianion where the second electron populates an Fe–Fe σ* antibonding orbital, resulting in effective scission of the iron–iron bond. The triplet state lies 4.2 kcal mol−1 lower in energy than the closed-shell singlet dianion whose HOMO correlates nicely with the LUMO of the neutral species 2-edt. Electrocatalytic proton reduction by both complexes has been studied in MeCN using CF3CO2H as the proton source. These catalysis studies reveal that while at high acid concentrations the active catalytic species is [Fe2(CO)4(μ-H)(κ2-diamine)(μ-edt)]+, at low acid concentrations the two complexes follow different catalytic mechanisms being associated with differences in their relative rates of protonation
