    JIT costing adaptive skeletons for performance portability

    The proliferation of widely available, but very different, parallel architectures makes the ability to deliver good parallel performance on a range of architectures, or performance portability, highly desirable. Irregular parallel problems, where the number and size of tasks is unpredictable, are particularly challenging and require dynamic coordination. The paper outlines a novel approach to delivering portable parallel performance for irregular parallel programs. The approach combines JIT compiler technology with dynamic scheduling and dynamic transformation of declarative parallelism. We specify families of algorithmic skeletons plus equations for rewriting skeleton expressions. We present the design of a framework that unfolds skeletons into task graphs, dynamically schedules tasks, and dynamically rewrites skeletons, guided by a lightweight JIT trace-based cost model, to adapt the number and granularity of tasks for the architecture. We outline the system architecture and prototype implementation in Racket/Pycket. As the current prototype does not yet automatically perform dynamic rewriting we present results based on manual offline rewriting, demonstrating that (i) the system scales to hundreds of cores given enough parallelism of suitable granularity, and (ii) the JIT trace cost model predicts granularity accurately enough to guide rewriting towards a good adaptive transformation

The autotuning, which uses evolutionary algorithm-based stochastic sampling, takes place over an extended duration and occurs in situ as programs execute. The environment or context during tuning is either largely static in one scenario or dynamic in another. We rely upon adaptive operator selection to dynamically generate worthy test configurations of the program. In this paper, we study how the choice of hyperparameters, which control the trade-off between exploration and exploitation, affects the effectiveness of adaptive operator selection which in turn affects the performance of the autotuner. We show that while the optimal assignment of hyperparameters varies greatly between different benchmarks, there exists a single assignment, for a context, of hyperparameters that performs well regardless of the program being tuned

    Run-time optimization of adaptive irregular applications

    Compared to traditional compile-time optimization, run-time optimization could offer significant performance improvements when parallelizing and optimizing adaptive irregular applications, because it performs program analysis and adaptive optimizations during program execution. Run-time techniques can succeed where static techniques fail because they exploit the characteristics of input data, programs' dynamic behaviors, and the underneath execution environment. When optimizing adaptive irregular applications for parallel execution, a common observation is that the effectiveness of the optimizing transformations depends on programs' input data and their dynamic phases. This dissertation presents a set of run-time optimization techniques that match the characteristics of programs' dynamic memory access patterns and the appropriate optimization (parallelization) transformations. First, we present a general adaptive algorithm selection framework to automatically and adaptively select at run-time the best performing, functionally equivalent algorithm for each of its execution instances. The selection process is based on off-line automatically generated prediction models and characteristics (collected and analyzed dynamically) of the algorithm's input data, In this dissertation, we specialize this framework for automatic selection of reduction algorithms. In this research, we have identified a small set of machine independent high-level characterization parameters and then we deployed an off-line, systematic experiment process to generate prediction models. These models, in turn, match the parameters to the best optimization transformations for a given machine. The technique has been evaluated thoroughly in terms of applications, platforms, and programs' dynamic behaviors. Specifically, for the reduction algorithm selection, the selected performance is within 2% of optimal performance and on average is 60% better than "Replicated Buffer," the default parallel reduction algorithm specified by OpenMP standard. To reduce the overhead of speculative run-time parallelization, we have developed an adaptive run-time parallelization technique that dynamically chooses effcient shadow structures to record a program's dynamic memory access patterns for parallelization. This technique complements the original speculative run-time parallelization technique, the LRPD test, in parallelizing loops with sparse memory accesses. The techniques presented in this dissertation have been implemented in an optimizing research compiler and can be viewed as effective building blocks for comprehensive run-time optimization systems, e.g., feedback-directed optimization systems and dynamic compilation systems

    Adaptive structured parallelism for computational grids

    Algorithmic skeletons abstract commonly-used patterns of parallel computation, communication, and interaction. They provide top-down design composition and control inheritance throughout the whole structure. Parallel programs are expressed by interweaving parameterised skeletons analogously to the way sequential structured programs are constructed. This design paradigm, known as structured parallelism, provides a high-level parallel programming method which allows the abstract description of programs and fosters portability. That is to say, structured parallelism requires the description of the algorithm rather than its implementation, providing a clear and consistent meaning across platforms while their associated structure depends on the particular implementation. By decoupling the structure from the meaning of a parallel program, it benefits entirely from any performance improvements in the systems infrastructure

    Towards an Adaptive Skeleton Framework for Performance Portability

The approach combines declarative parallelism with JIT technology, dynamic scheduling, and dynamic transformation. We present the design of an adaptive skeleton library, with a task graph implementation, JIT trace costing, and adaptive transformations. We outline the architecture of the protoype adaptive skeleton execution framework in Pycket, describing tasks, serialisation, and the current scheduler.We report a preliminary evaluation of the prototype framework using 4 micro-benchmarks and a small case study on two NUMA servers (24 and 96 cores) and a small cluster (17 hosts, 272 cores). Key results include Pycket delivering good sequential performance e.g. almost as fast as C for some benchmarks; good absolute speedups on all architectures (up to 120 on 128 cores for sumEuler); and that the adaptive transformations do improve performance

    Synthesis of application specific processor architectures for ultra-low energy consumption

    In this paper we suggest that further energy savings can be achieved by a new approach to synthesis of embedded processor cores, where the architecture is tailored to the algorithms that the core executes. In the context of embedded processor synthesis, both single-core and many-core, the types of algorithms and demands on the execution efficiency are usually known at the chip design time. This knowledge can be utilised at the design stage to synthesise architectures optimised for energy consumption. Firstly, we present an overview of both traditional energy saving techniques and new developments in architectural approaches to energy-efficient processing. Secondly, we propose a picoMIPS architecture that serves as an architectural template for energy-efficient synthesis. As a case study, we show how the picoMIPS architecture can be tailored to an energy efficient execution of the DCT algorithm
