An evolutionary model for the dynamics of vertical integration and network-based production
The concept of modularity has gained recently a growing attention in the management literature as a key to explain the contemporary trends of industrial dynamics. A stronger exploitation of external «networkbased» economies with respect to internal «bureaucracy-based» economies is one of the major consequences of the diffusion of flexible production systems and of modular architectures for products. To explain this connection, in this paper a model is presented which tries to explain the co-evolution of technology and organization as the outcome of a complex evolutionary process. In particular, through a set of exploratory agent-based simulations we try to show the existence of qualitatively different dynamic processes in coincidence of different phases and specific conditions of product and technology development, as well as the existence of a relationship between this dynamics and other competitive factors, determining a wide set of structurally different dynamical patterns in coincidence of different combinations of factors.modularity, modular networks
Mapping the Evolution of "Clusters": A Meta-analysis
This paper presents a meta-analysis of the âcluster literatureâ contained in scientific journals from 1969 to 2007. Thanks to an original database we study the evolution of a stream of literature which focuses on a research object which is both a theoretical puzzle and an empirical widespread evidence. We identify different growth stages, from take-off to development and maturity. We test the existence of a life-cycle within the authorships and we discover the existence of a substitutability relation between different collaborative behaviours. We study the relationships between a âspatialâ and an âindustrialâ approach within the textual corpus of cluster literature and we show the existence of a âpredatoryâ interaction. We detect the relevance of clustering behaviours in the location of authors working on clusters and in measuring the influence of geographical distance in co-authorship. We measure the extent of a convergence process of the vocabulary of scientists working on clusters.Cluster, Life-Cycle, Cluster Literature, Textual Analysis, Agglomeration, Co-Authorship
Behind the Italian Regional Divide: An Economic Fitness and Complexity Perspective
This paper applies the Economic Fitness and Complexity approach to
analyze the underlying factors behind the wide and persistent economic disparities across the Italian regional units. Measures of regional fitness
are obtained from their revealed comparative advantage and their patent performance. Southern regions tend to be characterised by a lower level of complexity than the regions in the Centre-North of the country. We interpret these results as indicating a lower level of capability endowment in the South. The system-wide approach of the paper is able to identify some critical sectors which display a rich pattern of connections with other sectors and which could play a pivotal role to create additional capabilities
and foster a more balanced regional development
The incubation process for the creation of viable firms: the case of ARCA Consortium
The aim of this study is to demonstrate that academic incubators
play a key role in firm viability. This study develops a new analytic systemic
framework that reveals the processes and factors that determine the
effectiveness of the incubation process supported by university incubators. We
analyse the effectiveness of the incubation process in the incubator of the
ARCA Consortium by means of a single case study with an embedded design.
In this study, adopting a systemic perspective, we shift the focus from the firm
to the context, shedding light on the systemic actions that create the
prerequisite conditions for the achievement of the firms\u2019 viability
The structure of R&D collaboration networks in the European Framework Programmes
Using a large and novel data source, we study the structure of R&D collaboration net-works in the first five EU Framework Programmes (FPs). The networks display proper-ties typical for complex networks, including scale-free degree distributions and the small-world property. Structural features are common across FPs, indicating similar network formation mechanisms despite changes in governance rules. Several findings point towards the existence of a stable core of interlinked actors since the early FPs with integration increasing over time. This core consists mainly of universities and research organisations. We observe assortative mixing by degree of projects, but not by degree of organisations. Unexpectedly, we find only weak association between central projects and project size, suggesting that different types of projects attract different groups of actors. In particular, large projects appear to have included few of the pivotal actors in the networks studied. Central projects only partially mirror funding priorities, indicating field-specific differences in network structures. The paper concludes with an agenda for future research.R&D collaboration, EU Framework Programmes, Complex Networks, Small World Effect, Centrality Measures, European Research Area
Cooperation networks and innovation: A complex system perspective to the analysis and evaluation of a EU regional innovation policy programme
Recent developments in innovation theory and policy have led policymakers to assign particular importance to supporting networks of cooperation among heterogeneous economic actors, especially in production systems composed of small and medium enterprises. Such innovative policies call for parallel innovations in policy analysis, monitoring and assessment. Our analysis of a policy experiment aimed at supporting innovation networks in the Italian region of Tuscany intends to address some issues connected with the design, monitoring and evaluation of such interventions. Combining tools from ethnographic research and social networks analysis, we explore the structural elements of the policy programme, its macroscopic impact on the regional innovation system, and the success of individual networks in attaining their specific objectives. This innovative approach allows us to derive some general methodological suggestions for the design and evaluation of similar programmes.Innovation policy, cooperation networks, evaluation, regional development, SMEs production systems, complex systems
Study of Instruments and Tools to Anticipate the Effects of Industrial Change - Portuguese report
This study was produced for the âStudy of Instruments and Tools to anticipate the effects of industrial change on employment, trades and vocational qualificationsâ and for DG V (Employment) of the European Commission in the late 1994. It started when the previous Portuguese government was still ruling, the main policies were defined, and the available instruments were not used in a minimum extend. The new Government, issued from the 1995 elections, proposed âemploymentâ as a major objective with horizontal responsibility. Thatâs also why there is now a Ministry for Qualifications and Employment, and another one for Solidarity and Social Affairs, not one for Employment and Social Affairs as the previous Government had. But more than that, this objective is considered to need a coordinated and consistent action that involves external affairs, industrial and regional policies, and the policies on education, training and employment, among others. The promotion of the âquality of employmentâ is being recently done at the working conditions, remuneration, social protection, occupational promotion levels, and the equality of opportunities towards employment and vocational training levels, and finally, the levels of qualification of human resources for a better labour market, education policy and training policy developments. In Portugal, the influence of the industrial change is produced in a top-down way; with (in some cases) an ex post analysis process to formulated training needs. This means that the industrial change impact is produced (normally, unexpectedly), and afterwards the responsible at the company level tries to know which training needs should be formulated in order those effects could be the smoother possible. The training needs at the company level is not based on anticipatory studies, neither is done any long term forecast on qualification, or even employment level.employment; qualifications; Portugal; labour market; working conditions; human resources; foresight; forecasting
Futures Studies in the Interactive Society
This book consists of papers which were prepared within the framework of the research project (No. T 048539) entitled Futures Studies in the Interactive Society (project leader: Ăva Hideg) and funded by the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA) between 2005 and 2009. Some discuss the theoretical and methodological questions of futures studies and foresight; others present new approaches to or
procedures of certain questions which are very important and topical from the perspective of forecast and foresight practice. Each study was conducted in pursuit of improvement in futures fields
