Simulation of low rigidity part machining applied to thin-walled structures
The aim of this study is to evaluate the modelling of machining vibrations of thin-walled aluminium work- pieces at high productivity rate. The use of numerical simulation is generally aimed at giving optimal cutting conditions for the precision and the surface finish needed. The proposed modelling includes all the ingredients needed for real productive machining of thin-walled parts. It has been tested with a specially designed machining test with high cutting engagement and taking into account all the phenomena involved in the dynamics of cutting. The system has been modelled using several simulation techni- ques. On the one hand, the milling process was modelled using a dynamic mechanistic model, with time domain simulation. On the other hand, the dynamic parameters of the system were obtained step by step by finite element analysis; thus the variation due to metal removal and the cutting edge position has been accurately taken into account. The results of the simulations were compared to those of the experiments; the discussion is based on the analysis of the cutting forces, the amplitude and the frequency of the vibrations evaluating the presence of chatter. A novel approach to modelling and simulating the contact behaviour between a human hand model and a deformable object
A deeper understanding of biomechanical behaviour of human hands becomes fundamental for any human hand-operated Q2 activities. The integration of biomechanical knowledge of human hands into product design process starts to play an increasingly important role in developing an ergonomic product-to-user interface for products and systems requiring high level of comfortable and responsive interactions. Generation of such precise and dynamic models can provide scientific evaluation tools to support product and system development through simulation. This type of support is urgently required in many applications such as hand skill training for surgical operations, ergonomic study of a product or system developed and so forth. The aim of this work is to study the contact behaviour between the operators’ hand and a hand-held tool or other similar contacts, by developing a novel and precise nonlinear 3D finite element model of the hand and by investigating the contact behaviour through simulation. The contact behaviour is externalised by solving the problem using the bi-potential method. Communication Between Process and Structure: Modelling and Simulating Message Reference Networks with COM/TE
Focusing on observable message signs and referencing structures, communication processes can be described and analysed as message reference networks which are characterized by dynamic pattern evolution. Computational simulation provides a way of obtaining insights into the factors driving such processes. Our paper describes a theoretical framework for communication-oriented modelling — the COM approach — that is centred around the notion of social visibility as a reputation mechanism. The approach contrasts with agent-based social networks on the one hand, and with bibliometric document networks on the other. Liquid-gas-solid flows with lattice Boltzmann: Simulation of floating bodies
This paper presents a model for the simulation of liquid-gas-solid flows by
means of the lattice Boltzmann method. The approach is built upon previous
works for the simulation of liquid-solid particle suspensions on the one hand,
and on a liquid-gas free surface model on the other. We show how the two
approaches can be unified by a novel set of dynamic cell conversion rules. For
evaluation, we concentrate on the rotational stability of non-spherical rigid
bodies floating on a plane water surface - a classical hydrostatic problem
known from naval architecture. We show the consistency of our method in this
kind of flows and obtain convergence towards the ideal solution for the

Analysis of variance for bayesian inference
This paper develops a multi-way analysis of variance for non-Gaussian multivariate distributions and provides a practical simulation algorithm to estimate the corresponding components of variance. It specifically addresses variance in Bayesian predictive distributions, showing that it may be decomposed into the sum of extrinsic variance, arising from posterior uncertainty about parameters, and intrinsic variance, which would exist even if parameters were known. Depending on the application at hand, further decomposition of extrinsic or intrinsic variance (or both) may be useful. The paper shows how to produce simulation-consistent estimates of all of these components, and the method demands little additional effort or computing time beyond that already invested in the posterior simulator. It illustrates the methods using a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model of the US economy, both before and during the global financial crisis. The Scalability-Efficiency/Maintainability-Portability Trade-off in Simulation Software Engineering: Examples and a Preliminary Systematic Literature Review
Large-scale simulations play a central role in science and the industry.
Several challenges occur when building simulation software, because simulations
require complex software developed in a dynamic construction process. That is
why simulation software engineering (SSE) is emerging lately as a research
focus. The dichotomous trade-off between scalability and efficiency (SE) on the
one hand and maintainability and portability (MP) on the other hand is one of
the core challenges. We report on the SE/MP trade-off in the context of an
ongoing systematic literature review (SLR). After characterizing the issue of
the SE/MP trade-off using two examples from our own research, we (1) review the
33 identified articles that assess the trade-off, (2) summarize the proposed
solutions for the trade-off, and (3) discuss the findings for SSE and future
work. Overall, we see evidence for the SE/MP trade-off and first solution
approaches. However, a strong empirical foundation has yet to be established;
general quantitative metrics and methods supporting software developers in
addressing the trade-off have to be developed. We foresee considerable future

Goal-Directed Behavior under Variational Predictive Coding: Dynamic Organization of Visual Attention and Working Memory
Mental simulation is a critical cognitive function for goal-directed behavior
because it is essential for assessing actions and their consequences. When a
self-generated or externally specified goal is given, a sequence of actions
that is most likely to attain that goal is selected among other candidates via
mental simulation. Therefore, better mental simulation leads to better
goal-directed action planning. However, developing a mental simulation model is
challenging because it requires knowledge of self and the environment. The
current paper studies how adequate goal-directed action plans of robots can be
mentally generated by dynamically organizing top-down visual attention and
visual working memory. For this purpose, we propose a neural network model
based on variational Bayes predictive coding, where goal-directed action
planning is formulated by Bayesian inference of latent intentional space. Our
experimental results showed that cognitively meaningful competencies, such as
autonomous top-down attention to the robot end effector (its hand) as well as
dynamic organization of occlusion-free visual working memory, emerged.
Furthermore, our analysis of comparative experiments indicated that
introduction of visual working memory and the inference mechanism using
variational Bayes predictive coding significantly improve the performance in
planning adequate goal-directed actions
Analysis and operational challenges of dynamic ride sharing demand responsive transportation models
There is a wide body of evidence that suggests sustainable mobility is not only a technological question, but that automotive technology will be a part of the solution in becoming a necessary albeit insufficient condition. Sufficiency is emerging as a paradigm shift from car ownership to vehicle usage, which is a consequence of socio-economic changes. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) now make it possible for a user to access a mobility service to go anywhere at any time. Among the many emerging mobility services, Multiple Passenger Ridesharing and its variants look the most promising. However, challenges arise in implementing these systems while accounting specifically for time dependencies and time windows that reflect users’ needs, specifically in terms of real-time fleet dispatching and dynamic route calculation. On the other hand, we must consider the feasibility and impact analysis of the many factors influencing the behavior of the system – as, for example, service demand, the size of the service fleet, the capacity of the shared vehicles and whether the time window requirements are soft or tight. This paper analyzes - a Decision Support System that computes solutions with ad hoc heuristics applied to variants of Pick Up and Delivery Problems with Time Windows, as well as to Feasibility and Profitability criteria rooted in Dynamic Insertion Heuristics. To evaluate the applications, a Simulation Framework is proposed. It is based on a microscopic simulation model that emulates real-time traffic conditions and a real traffic information system. It also interacts with the Decision Support System by feeding it with the required data for making decisions in the simulation that emulate the behavior of the shared fleet. The proposed simulation framework has been implemented in a model of Barcelona’s Central Business District. The obtained results prove the potential feasibility of the mobility concept.Postprint (published version
