Wireless Software Synchronization of Multiple Distributed Cameras
We present a method for precisely time-synchronizing the capture of image
sequences from a collection of smartphone cameras connected over WiFi. Our
method is entirely software-based, has only modest hardware requirements, and
achieves an accuracy of less than 250 microseconds on unmodified commodity
hardware. It does not use image content and synchronizes cameras prior to
capture. The algorithm operates in two stages. In the first stage, we designate
one device as the leader and synchronize each client device's clock to it by
estimating network delay. Once clocks are synchronized, the second stage
initiates continuous image streaming, estimates the relative phase of image
timestamps between each client and the leader, and shifts the streams into
alignment. We quantitatively validate our results on a multi-camera rig imaging
a high-precision LED array and qualitatively demonstrate significant
improvements to multi-view stereo depth estimation and stitching of dynamic
scenes. We release as open source 'libsoftwaresync', an Android implementation
of our system, to inspire new types of collective capture applications.Comment: Main: 9 pages, 10 figures. Supplemental: 3 pages, 5 figure
Multi-Scale 3D Scene Flow from Binocular Stereo Sequences
Scene flow methods estimate the three-dimensional motion field for points in the world, using multi-camera video data. Such methods combine multi-view reconstruction with motion estimation. This paper describes an alternative formulation for dense scene flow estimation that provides reliable results using only two cameras by fusing stereo and optical flow estimation into a single coherent framework. Internally, the proposed algorithm generates probability distributions for optical flow and disparity. Taking into account the uncertainty in the intermediate stages allows for more reliable estimation of the 3D scene flow than previous methods allow. To handle the aperture problems inherent in the estimation of optical flow and disparity, a multi-scale method along with a novel region-based technique is used within a regularized solution. This combined approach both preserves discontinuities and prevents over-regularization – two problems commonly associated with the basic multi-scale approaches. Experiments with synthetic and real test data demonstrate the strength of the proposed approach.National Science Foundation (CNS-0202067, IIS-0208876); Office of Naval Research (N00014-03-1-0108
Archiving and Delivery of 3DTI Rehabilitation Sessions
In this paper we present CyPhy: a cyber-physiotherapy system that brings daily rehabilitation to patient’s home with supervision from trained therapist. With its archiving and delivery features, CyPhy is able to 1) capture and record RGB-D and physiotherapy-related medical sensing data streams in home environment; 2) provide efficient storage for rehabilitation session recordings; 3) provide fast metadata analysis over stored sessions for review recommendation; 4) adaptively deliver rehabilitation session under different networking capabilities; 5) support smooth viewpoint changing during 3D video streaming with scene rendering schemes tailored for devices with different bandwidth and power limitations; and 6) provide platform-independent streaming client for various mobile and PC environments
Automatic Objects Removal for Scene Completion
With the explosive growth of web-based cameras and mobile devices, billions
of photographs are uploaded to the internet. We can trivially collect a huge
number of photo streams for various goals, such as 3D scene reconstruction and
other big data applications. However, this is not an easy task due to the fact
the retrieved photos are neither aligned nor calibrated. Furthermore, with the
occlusion of unexpected foreground objects like people, vehicles, it is even
more challenging to find feature correspondences and reconstruct realistic
scenes. In this paper, we propose a structure based image completion algorithm
for object removal that produces visually plausible content with consistent
structure and scene texture. We use an edge matching technique to infer the
potential structure of the unknown region. Driven by the estimated structure,
texture synthesis is performed automatically along the estimated curves. We
evaluate the proposed method on different types of images: from highly
structured indoor environment to the natural scenes. Our experimental results
demonstrate satisfactory performance that can be potentially used for
subsequent big data processing: 3D scene reconstruction and location
recognition.Comment: 6 pages, IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications

ModDrop: adaptive multi-modal gesture recognition
We present a method for gesture detection and localisation based on
multi-scale and multi-modal deep learning. Each visual modality captures
spatial information at a particular spatial scale (such as motion of the upper
body or a hand), and the whole system operates at three temporal scales. Key to
our technique is a training strategy which exploits: i) careful initialization
of individual modalities; and ii) gradual fusion involving random dropping of
separate channels (dubbed ModDrop) for learning cross-modality correlations
while preserving uniqueness of each modality-specific representation. We
present experiments on the ChaLearn 2014 Looking at People Challenge gesture
recognition track, in which we placed first out of 17 teams. Fusing multiple
modalities at several spatial and temporal scales leads to a significant
increase in recognition rates, allowing the model to compensate for errors of
the individual classifiers as well as noise in the separate channels.
Futhermore, the proposed ModDrop training technique ensures robustness of the
classifier to missing signals in one or several channels to produce meaningful
predictions from any number of available modalities. In addition, we
demonstrate the applicability of the proposed fusion scheme to modalities of
arbitrary nature by experiments on the same dataset augmented with audio.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
