    Financial Information Mediation: A Case Study of Standards Integration for Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment Using the COIN Mediation Technology

    Each player in the financial industry, each bank, stock exchange, government agency, or insurance company operates its own financial information system or systems. By its very nature, financial information, like the money that it represents, changes hands. Therefore the interoperation of financial information systems is the cornerstone of the financial services they support. E-services frameworks such as web services are an unprecedented opportunity for the flexible interoperation of financial systems. Naturally the critical economic role and the complexity of financial information led to the development of various standards. Yet standards alone are not the panacea: different groups of players use different standards or different interpretations of the same standard. We believe that the solution lies in the convergence of flexible E-services such as web-services and semantically rich meta-data as promised by the semantic Web; then a mediation architecture can be used for the documentation, identification, and resolution of semantic conflicts arising from the interoperation of heterogeneous financial services. In this paper we illustrate the nature of the problem in the Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment (EBPP) industry and the viability of the solution we propose. We describe and analyze the integration of services using four different formats: the IFX, OFX and SWIFT standards, and an example proprietary format. To accomplish this integration we use the COntext INterchange (COIN) framework.     Reconciling Equational Heterogeneity within a Data Federation

    Mappings in most federated databases are conceptualized and implemented as black-box transformations between source schemas and a federated schema. This approach does not allow specific mappings to be declared once and reused in other situations. We present an alternative approach, in which data-level mappings are represented independent of source and federated schemas as a network between “contexts”. This compendious representation expedites the data federation process via mapping reuse and automated mapping composition from simpler mappings. We illustrate the benefits of mapping reuse and composition by using an example that incorporates equational mappings and the application of symbolic equation solving techniques

    Towards interoperability in heterogeneous database systems

    Distributed heterogeneous databases consist of systems which differ physically and logically, containing different data models and data manipulation languages. Although these databases are independently created and administered they must cooperate and interoperate. Users need to access and manipulate data from several databases and applications may require data from a wide variety of independent databases. Therefore, a new system architecture is required to manipulate and manage distinct and multiple databases, in a transparent way, while preserving their autonomy. This report contains an extensive survey on heterogeneous databases, analysing and comparing the different aspects, concepts and approaches related to the topic. It introduces an architecture to support interoperability among heterogeneous database systems. The architecture avoids the use of a centralised structure to assist in the different phases of the interoperability process. It aims to support scalability, and to assure privacy and nfidentiality of the data. The proposed architecture allows the databases to decide when to participate in the system, what type of data to share and with which other databases, thereby preserving their autonomy. The report also describes an approach to information discovery in the proposed architecture, without using any centralised structure as repositories and dictionaries, and broadcasting to all databases. It attempts to reduce the number of databases searched and to preserve the privacy of the shared data. The main idea is to visit a database that either containsthe requested data or knows about another database that possible contains this data

    Mediators Metadata Management Services: An Implementation Using GOA++ System

    The main contribution of this work is the development of a Metadata Manager to interconnect heterogeneous and autonomous information sources in a flexible, expandable and transparent way. The interoperability at the semantic level is reached using an integration layer, structured in a hierarchical way, based on the concept of Mediators. Services of a Mediator Metadata Manager (MMM) are specified and implemented using functions based on the Outlines of GOA++.
