    Dynamic Approximate Vertex Cover and Maximum Matching

    We consider the problem of maintaining a large matching or a small vertex cover in a dynamically changing graph. Each update to the graph is either an edge deletion or an edge insertion. We give the first randomized data structure that simultaneously achieves a constant approximation factor and handles a sequence of k updates in k. polylog(n) time. Previous data structures require a polynomial amount of computation per update. The starting point of our construction is a distributed algorithm of Parnas and Ron (Theor. Comput. Sci. 2007), which they designed for their sublinear-time approximation algorithm for the vertex cover size.     Deterministic fully dynamic approximate vertex cover and fractional matching in O(1) update time

    We consider the problems of maintaining an approximate maximum matching and an approximate minimum vertex cover in a dynamic graph undergoing a sequence of edge insertions/deletions. Starting with the seminal work of Onak and Rubinfeld [STOC 2010], this problem has received significant attention in recent years. Very recently, extending the framework of Baswana, Gupta and Sen [FOCS 2011], Solomon [FOCS 2016] gave a randomized dynamic algorithm for this problem that has an approximation ratio of 2 and an amortized update time of O(1) with high probability. This algorithm requires the assumption of an oblivious adversary, meaning that the future sequence of edge insertions/deletions in the graph cannot depend in any way on the algorithm’s past output. A natural way to remove the assumption on oblivious adversary is to give a deterministic dynamic algorithm for the same problem in O(1) update time. In this paper, we resolve this question. We present a new deterministic fully dynamic algorithm that maintains a O(1)-approximate minimum vertex cover and maximum fractional matching, with an amortized update time of O(1). Previously, the best deterministic algorithm for this problem was due to Bhattacharya, Henzinger and Italiano [SODA 2015]; it had an approximation ratio of (2 + e) and an amortized update time of O(logn=e2 ). Our result can be generalized to give a fully dynamic O( f3 )-approximate algorithm with O( f2 ) amortized update time for the hypergraph vertex cover and fractional hypergraph matching problem, where every hyperedge has at most f vertices

    Fully Dynamic Almost-Maximal Matching: Breaking the Polynomial Worst-Case Time Barrier

    The state-of-the-art algorithm for maintaining an approximate maximum matching in fully dynamic graphs has a polynomial worst-case update time, even for poor approximation guarantees. Bhattacharya, Henzinger and Nanongkai showed how to maintain a constant approximation to the minimum vertex cover, and thus also a constant-factor estimate of the maximum matching size, with polylogarithmic worst-case update time. Later (in SODA\u2717 Proc.) they improved the approximation to 2+epsilon. Nevertheless, the fundamental problem of maintaining an approximate matching with sub-polynomial worst-case time bounds remained open. We present a randomized algorithm for maintaining an almost-maximal matching in fully dynamic graphs with polylogarithmic worst-case update time. Such a matching provides (2+epsilon)-approximations for both maximum matching and minimum vertex cover, for any epsilon > 0. The worst-case update time of our algorithm, O(poly(log n,epsilon^{-1})), holds deterministically, while the almost-maximality guarantee holds with high probability. Our result was done independently of the (2+epsilon)-approximation result of Bhattacharya et al., thus settling the aforementioned problem on dynamic matchings and providing essentially the best possible approximation guarantee for dynamic vertex cover (assuming the unique games conjecture). To prove this result, we exploit a connection between the standard oblivious adversarial model, which can be viewed as inherently "online", and an "offline" model where some (limited) information on the future can be revealed efficiently upon demand. Our randomized algorithm is derived from a deterministic algorithm in this offline model. This approach gives an elegant way to analyze randomized dynamic algorithms, and is of independent interest

    Deterministic Fully Dynamic Data Structures for Vertex Cover and Matching

    We present the first deterministic data structures for maintaining approximate minimum vertex cover and maximum matching in a fully dynamic graph G=(V,E)G = (V,E), with V=n|V| = n and E=m|E| =m, in o(m)o(\sqrt{m}\,) time per update. In particular, for minimum vertex cover we provide deterministic data structures for maintaining a (2+\eps) approximation in O(\log n/\eps^2) amortized time per update. For maximum matching, we show how to maintain a (3+\eps) approximation in O(\min(\sqrt{n}/\epsilon, m^{1/3}/\eps^2)) {\em amortized} time per update, and a (4+\eps) approximation in O(m^{1/3}/\eps^2) {\em worst-case} time per update. Our data structure for fully dynamic minimum vertex cover is essentially near-optimal and settles an open problem by Onak and Rubinfeld from STOC' 2010.Comment: An extended abstract of this paper will appear in SODA' 201

    Incremental (1-?)-Approximate Dynamic Matching in O(poly(1/?)) Update Time

    In the dynamic approximate maximum bipartite matching problem we are given bipartite graph G undergoing updates and our goal is to maintain a matching of G which is large compared the maximum matching size ?(G). We define a dynamic matching algorithm to be ? (respectively (?, ?))-approximate if it maintains matching M such that at all times |M | ? ?(G) ? ? (respectively |M| ? ?(G) ? ? - ?). We present the first deterministic (1-?)-approximate dynamic matching algorithm with O(poly(?^{-1})) amortized update time for graphs undergoing edge insertions. Previous solutions either required super-constant [Gupta FSTTCS\u2714, Bhattacharya-Kiss-Saranurak SODA\u2723] or exponential in 1/? [Grandoni-Leonardi-Sankowski-Schwiegelshohn-Solomon SODA\u2719] update time. Our implementation is arguably simpler than the mentioned algorithms and its description is self contained. Moreover, we show that if we allow for additive (1, ??n)-approximation our algorithm seamlessly extends to also handle vertex deletions, on top of edge insertions. This makes our algorithm one of the few small update time algorithms for (1-?)-approximate dynamic matching allowing for updates both increasing and decreasing the maximum matching size of G in a fully dynamic manner. Our algorithm relies on the weighted variant of the celebrated Edge-Degree-Constrained-Subgraph (EDCS) datastructure introduced by [Bernstein-Stein ICALP\u2715]. As far as we are aware we introduce the first application of the weighted-EDCS for arbitrarily dense graphs. We also present a significantly simplified proof for the approximation ratio of weighed-EDCS as a matching sparsifier compared to [Bernstein-Stein], as well as simple descriptions of a fractional matching and fractional vertex cover defined on top of the EDCS. Considering the wide range of applications EDCS has found in settings such as streaming, sub-linear, stochastic and more we hope our techniques will be of independent research interest outside of the dynamic setting

    Fully dynamic approximate maximum matching and minimum vertex cover in O(log3 n) worst case update time

    We consider the problem of maintaining an approximately maximum (fractional) matching and an approximately minimum vertex cover in a dynamic graph. Starting with the seminal paper by Onak and Rubinfeld [STOC 2010], this problem has received significant attention in recent years. There remains, however, a polynomial gap between the best known worst case update time and the best known amortised update time for this problem, even after allowing for randomisation. Specifically, Bernstein and Stein [ICALP 2015, SODA 2016] have the best known worst case update time. They present a deterministic data structure with approximation ratio (3/2 + ∊) and worst case update time O(m1/4/ ∊2), where m is the number of edges in the graph. In recent past, Gupta and Peng [FOCS 2013] gave a deterministic data structure with approximation ratio (1+ ∊) and worst case update time No known randomised data structure beats the worst case update times of these two results. In contrast, the paper by Onak and Rubinfeld [STOC 2010] gave a randomised data structure with approximation ratio O(1) and amortised update time O(log2 n), where n is the number of nodes in the graph. This was later improved by Baswana, Gupta and Sen [FOCS 2011] and Solomon [FOCS 2016], leading to a randomised date structure with approximation ratio 2 and amortised update time O(1). We bridge the polynomial gap between the worst case and amortised update times for this problem, without using any randomisation. We present a deterministic data structure with approximation ratio (2 + ∊) and worst case update time O(log3 n), for all sufficiently small constants ∊

    Coresets Meet EDCS: Algorithms for Matching and Vertex Cover on Massive Graphs

    As massive graphs become more prevalent, there is a rapidly growing need for scalable algorithms that solve classical graph problems, such as maximum matching and minimum vertex cover, on large datasets. For massive inputs, several different computational models have been introduced, including the streaming model, the distributed communication model, and the massively parallel computation (MPC) model that is a common abstraction of MapReduce-style computation. In each model, algorithms are analyzed in terms of resources such as space used or rounds of communication needed, in addition to the more traditional approximation ratio. In this paper, we give a single unified approach that yields better approximation algorithms for matching and vertex cover in all these models. The highlights include: * The first one pass, significantly-better-than-2-approximation for matching in random arrival streams that uses subquadratic space, namely a (1.5+ϵ)(1.5+\epsilon)-approximation streaming algorithm that uses O(n1.5)O(n^{1.5}) space for constant ϵ>0\epsilon > 0. * The first 2-round, better-than-2-approximation for matching in the MPC model that uses subquadratic space per machine, namely a (1.5+ϵ)(1.5+\epsilon)-approximation algorithm with O(mn+n)O(\sqrt{mn} + n) memory per machine for constant ϵ>0\epsilon > 0. By building on our unified approach, we further develop parallel algorithms in the MPC model that give a (1+ϵ)(1 + \epsilon)-approximation to matching and an O(1)O(1)-approximation to vertex cover in only O(loglogn)O(\log\log{n}) MPC rounds and O(n/polylog(n))O(n/poly\log{(n)}) memory per machine. These results settle multiple open questions posed in the recent paper of Czumaj~et.al. [STOC 2018]

    Almost-Smooth Histograms and Sliding-Window Graph Algorithms

    We study algorithms for the sliding-window model, an important variant of the data-stream model, in which the goal is to compute some function of a fixed-length suffix of the stream. We extend the smooth-histogram framework of Braverman and Ostrovsky (FOCS 2007) to almost-smooth functions, which includes all subadditive functions. Specifically, we show that if a subadditive function can be (1+ϵ)(1+\epsilon)-approximated in the insertion-only streaming model, then it can be (2+ϵ)(2+\epsilon)-approximated also in the sliding-window model with space complexity larger by factor O(ϵ1logw)O(\epsilon^{-1}\log w), where ww is the window size. We demonstrate how our framework yields new approximation algorithms with relatively little effort for a variety of problems that do not admit the smooth-histogram technique. For example, in the frequency-vector model, a symmetric norm is subadditive and thus we obtain a sliding-window (2+ϵ)(2+\epsilon)-approximation algorithm for it. Another example is for streaming matrices, where we derive a new sliding-window (2+ϵ)(\sqrt{2}+\epsilon)-approximation algorithm for Schatten 44-norm. We then consider graph streams and show that many graph problems are subadditive, including maximum submodular matching, minimum vertex-cover, and maximum kk-cover, thereby deriving sliding-window O(1)O(1)-approximation algorithms for them almost for free (using known insertion-only algorithms).
