Towards Odor-Sensitive Mobile Robots

ones when operating in real environments. Until now, these sensorial systems mostly relied on range
sensors (laser scanner, sonar, active triangulation) and cameras. While electronic noses have barely
been employed, they can provide a complementary sensory information, vital for some applications, as
with humans. This chapter analyzes the motivation of providing a robot with gas-sensing capabilities
and also reviews some of the hurdles that are preventing smell from achieving the importance of other
sensing modalities in robotics. The achievements made so far are reviewed to illustrate the current status
on the three main fields within robotics olfaction: the classification of volatile substances, the spatial
estimation of the gas dispersion from sparse measurements, and the localization of the gas source within
a known environment

Artificial Olfaction in the 21st Century
The human olfactory system remains one of the most challenging biological systems to replicate. Humans use it without thinking, where it can measure offer protection from harm and bring enjoyment in equal measure. It is the system's real-time ability to detect and analyze complex odors that makes it difficult to replicate. The field of artificial olfaction has recruited and stimulated interdisciplinary research and commercial development for several applications that include malodor measurement, medical diagnostics, food and beverage quality, environment and security. Over the last century, innovative engineers and scientists have been focused on solving a range of problems associated with measurement and control of odor. The IEEE Sensors Journal has published Special Issues on olfaction in 2002 and 2012. Here we continue that coverage. In this article, we summarize early work in the 20th Century that served as the foundation upon which we have been building our odor-monitoring instrumental and measurement systems. We then examine the current state of the art that has been achieved over the last two decades as we have transitioned into the 21st Century. Much has been accomplished, but great progress is needed in sensor technology, system design, product manufacture and performance standards. In the final section, we predict levels of performance and ubiquitous applications that will be realized during in the mid to late 21st Century
Signal and data processing for machine olfaction and chemical sensing: A review
Signal and data processing are essential elements in electronic noses as well as in most chemical sensing instruments. The multivariate responses obtained by chemical sensor arrays require signal and data processing to carry out the fundamental tasks of odor identification (classification), concentration estimation (regression), and grouping of similar odors (clustering). In the last decade, important advances have shown that proper processing can improve the robustness of the instruments against diverse perturbations, namely, environmental variables, background changes, drift, etc. This article reviews the advances made in recent years in signal and data processing for machine olfaction and chemical sensing
Past, Present, and Future of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping: Towards the Robust-Perception Age
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)consists in the concurrent
construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the
state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing
progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications,
and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey
the current state of SLAM. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto
standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad
set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric
and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees,
active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously
serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By
looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open
challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific
investigation. The paper also contains the authors' take on two questions that
often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and
Is SLAM solved
Assessing over Time Performance of an eNose Composed of 16 Single-Type MOX Gas Sensors Applied to Classify Two Volatiles
This paper assesses the over time performance of a custom electronic nose (eNose) composed of an array of commercial low-cost and single-type miniature metal-oxide (MOX) semiconductor gas sensors. The eNose uses 16 BME680 versatile sensor devices, each including an embedded
non-selective MOX gas sensor that was originally proposed to measure the total volatile organic
compounds (TVOC) in the air. This custom eNose has been used previously to detect ethanol and
acetone, obtaining initial promising classification results that worsened over time because of sensor
drift. The current paper assesses the over time performance of different classification methods applied
to process the information gathered from the eNose. The best classification results have been obtained
when applying a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to the normalized conductance of the sensing
layer of the 16 MOX gas sensors available in the eNose. The LDA procedure by itself has reduced the
influence of drift in the classification performance of this single-type eNose during an evaluation
period of three month
Classification of Three Volatiles Using a Single-Type eNose with Detailed Class-Map Visualization
The use of electronic noses (eNoses) as analysis tools are growing in popularity; however, the lack of a comprehensive, visual representation of how the different classes are organized and distributed largely complicates the interpretation of the classification results, thus reducing their practicality. The new contributions of this paper are the assessment of the multivariate classification performance of a custom, low-cost eNose composed of 16 single-type (identical) MOX gas sensors for the classification of three volatiles, along with a proposal to improve the visual interpretation of the classification results by means of generating a detailed 2D class-map representation based on the inverse of the orthogonal linear transformation obtained from a PCA and LDA analysis. The results showed that this single-type eNose implementation was able to perform multivariate classification, while the class-map visualization summarized the learned features and how these features may affect the performance of the classification, simplifying the interpretation and understanding of the eNose results
Global Calibration Models for Temperature-Modulated Metal Oxide Gas Sensors: A Strategy to Reduce Calibration Costs
Tolerances in the fabrication of metal oxide (MOX) gas sensors lead to inter-device variability in baseline and sensitivity, even for sensors of the same fabrication batch. This has traditionally forced the use of individual calibration models (ICMs) built specifically for each sensor unit, which requires an expensive and time-consuming calibration process and hinders sensor replacement. We propose Global calibration models (GCMs) built using the responses of multiple sensor units, and then applied to a new sensor unit that is not part of the calibration set. GCM have been already successfully applied to transfer calibration models between sensor arrays (electronic noses) for classification tasks. In this work, we investigate the use of such models for regression purposes in temperature-modulated sensors, aiming at the quantification of low concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) in the presence of variable humidity levels (20–80% r.h. at 26 ± 1 °C). Using a laboratory dataset containing data from 6 replicas of the FIS SB-500–12 model, we evaluate the performance of global models built with data from 1 to 4 sensors when applied to unseen sensor units. Results show that the performance of global models improves with an increasing number of sensors in the calibration set, approaching the performance of individual calibration models (1.38 ± 0.15 ppm for GCM; 1.05 ± 0.24 ppm for ICM), and surpassing their performance only if few calibration conditions per sensor are available (2.09 ± 0.10 ppm for GCM;; 2.76 ± 0.22 ppm for ICM, if only 5 samples per sensor are used).We would like to acknowledge, the Departament d’Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació de la Generalitat de Catalunya (expedient 2017 SGR 1721); the Comissionat per a Universitats i Recerca del DIUE de la Generalitat de Catalunya; and the European Social Fund (ESF).
