    The new enhancement of UMTS: HSDPA and HSUPA

    During the last two decades, the world of the mobile communications grew a lot, as a consequence of the increasing necessity of people to communicate. Now, the mobile communications still need to improve for satisfies the user demands. The new enhancement of UMTS in concrete HSDPA and HSUPA is one of these improvements that the society needs. HSDPA and HSUPA which together are called HSPA, give to the users higher data rates in downlink and uplink. The higher data rates permit to the operators give more different types of services and at the same time with better quality. As a result, people can do several new applications with their mobile terminals like applications that before a computer and internet connection were required, now it is possible to do directly with the mobile terminal. This thesis consists in study these new technologies denominated HSDPA and HSUPA and thus know better the last tendencies in the mobile communications. Also it has a roughly idea about the future tendencies

    Performance analysis of a hybrid topology CDD/TDD-CDMA network architecture

In this project report we propose a physical layer implementation of CDD that utilizes orthogonal Gold codes as the means of differentiating transmission directions, in order to implement an ad-hoc networking infrastructure that is overlaid on a standard mobile networking topology, and hence creating a hybrid networking topology. The performance of the CDD based system is then comparatively assessed in two ways: from the perspective of the physical layer using point-to-point simulations and from the perspective of the network layer using an iterative snapshot based simulation where node elements are able to setup connections based on predefined rules

    Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2005.The evolution of the intemet protocol (IP) to offer quality of service (QoS) makes it a suitable core network protocol for next generation networks (NGN). The QoS features incorporated to IP will enable future lP-based wireless networks to meet QoS requirements of various multimedia traffic. The Differentiated Service (Diffserv) Architecture is a promising QoS technology due to its scalability which arises from traffic flow aggregates. For this reason, in this dissertation a network infrastructure based on DiffServ is assumed. This architecture provides assured service (AS) and premium service (PrS) classes in addition to best-effort service (BE). The medium access control (MAC) protocol is one of the important design issues in wireless networks. In a wireless network carrying multimedia traffic, the MAC protocol is required to provide simultaneous support for a wide variety of traffic types, support traffic with delay and jitter bounds, and assign bandwidth in an efficient and fair manner among traffic classes. Several MAC protocols capable of supporting multimedia services have been proposed in the literature, the majority of which were designed for wireless A1M (Asynchronous Transfer Mode). The focus of this dissertation is on time division multiple access and code division multiple access (TDMAlCDMA) based MAC protocols that support QoS in lP-based wireless networks. This dissertation begins by giving a survey of wireless MAC protocols. The survey considers MAC protocols for centralised wireless networks and classifies them according to their multiple access technology and as well as their method of resource sharing. A novel TDMAlCDMA based MAC protocol incorporating techniques from existing protocols is then proposed. To provide the above-mentioned services, the bandwidth is partitioned amongst AS and PrS classes. The BE class utilizes the remaining bandwidth from the two classes because it does not have QoS requirements. The protocol employs a demand assignment (DA) scheme to support traffic from PrS and AS classes. BE traffic is supported by a random reservation access scheme with dual multiple access interference (MAl) admission thresholds. The performance of the protocol, i.e. the AS or PrS call blocking probability, and BE throughput are evaluated through Markov analytical models and Monte-Carlo simulations. Furthermore, the protocol is modified and incorporated into IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access (BWA) network

    Multi-hop relaying networks in TDD-CDMA systems

    The communications phenomena at the end of the 20th century were the Internet and mobile telephony. Now, entering the new millennium, an effective combination of the two should become a similarly everyday experience. Current limitations include scarce, exorbitantly priced bandwidth and considerable power consumption at higher data rates. Relaying systems use several shorter communications links instead of the conventional point-to-point transmission. This can allow for a lower power requirement and, due to the shorter broadcast range, bandwidth re-use may be more efficiently exploited. Code division multiple access (CDMA) is emerging as one of the most common methods for multi user access. Combining CDMA with time division duplexing (TDD) provides a system that supports asymmetric communications and relaying cost-effectively. The capacity of CDMA may be reduced by interference from other users, hence it is important that the routing of relays is performed to minimise interference at receivers. This thesis analyses relaying within the context of TDD-CDMA systems. Such a system was included in the initial draft of the European 3G specifications as opportunity driven multiple access (ODMA). Results are presented which demonstrate that ODMA allows for a more flexible capacity coverage trade-off than non-relaying systems. An investigation into the interference characteristics of ODMA shows that most interference occurs close to the base station (BS). Hence it is possible that in-cell routing to avoid the BS may increase capacity. As a result, a novel hybrid network topology is presented. ODMA uses path loss as a metric for routing. This technique does not avoid interference, and hence ODMA shows no capacity increase with the hybrid network. Consequently, a novel interference based routing algorithm and admission control are developed. When at least half the network is engaged in in-cell transmission, the interference based system allows for a higher capacity than a conventional cellular system. In an attempt to reduce transmitted power, a novel congestion based routing algorithm is introduced. This system is shown to have lower power requirement than any other analysed system and, when more than 2 hops are allowed, the highest capacity. The allocation of time slots affects system performance through co-channel interference. To attempt to minimise this, a novel dynamic channel allocation (DCA) algorithm is developed based on the congestion routing algorithm. By combining the global minimisation of system congestion in both time slots and routing, the DCA further increases throughput. Implementing congestion routed relaying, especially with DCA, in any TDD-CDMA system with in-cell calls can show significant performance improvements over conventional cellular systems

A modelization for analog power and binary quantized power is given. In the case of analog power, histograms of the power distribution during one working day are presented. In the case of quantized power the two time statistics, the time period of opportunities distribution and the time between opportunities distribution are presented, described and modeled. The measurement setup is standing in line of sight with the base station. Also, in terms of maximum sensitivity the measurement setup is described and analyzed. Spectrum non occupancy in terms of total time for the GSM900 band and the DCS1800 band is given, for a working day.Nesta dissertação são feitas medidas e a análise de ocupação de espectro em uma banda de GSM900, uma banda de DCS1800 e toda a largura de banda do UMTS. É apresentada uma modelização para potência analógica e para a potência binária quantizada. No caso da potência analógica são apresentados histogramas da distribuição de potência ao longo de um dia útil. No caso da potência quantizada as duas estatísticas, distribuição do período de tempo de oportunidades e distribuição do tempo entre oportunidades, são apresentadas, descritas e modeladas. O setup de medida encontra-se em linha de vista com a estação base. O setup é descrito e analisado em termos de máxima sensibilidade. A desocupação de espectro em termos de tempo total para a banda de GSM900 e para a banda DCS1800 é fornecida, para um dia de útil

    Technology Assessment for the Future Aeronautical Communications System

    To address emerging saturation in the VHF aeronautical bands allocated internationally for air traffic management communications, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has requested development of a common global solution through its Aeronautical Communications Panel (ACP). In response, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Eurocontrol initiated a joint study, with the support of NASA and U.S. and European contractors, to provide major findings on alternatives and recommendations to the ICAO ACP Working Group C (WG-C). Under an FAA/Eurocontrol cooperative research and development agreement, ACP WG-C Action Plan 17 (AP-17), commonly referred to as the Future Communications Study (FCS), NASA Glenn Research Center is responsible for the investigation of potential communications technologies that support the long-term mobile communication operational concepts of the FCS. This report documents the results of the first phase of the technology assessment and recommendations referred to in the Technology Pre-Screening Task 3.1 of AP-17. The prescreening identifies potential technologies that are under development in the industry and provides an initial assessment against a harmonized set of evaluation criteria that address high level capabilities, projected maturity for the time frame for usage in aviation, and potential applicability to aviation. A wide variety of candidate technologies were evaluated from several communications service categories including: cellular telephony; IEEE-802.xx standards; public safety radio; satellite and over-the-horizon communications; custom narrowband VHF; custom wideband; and military communications
