The Fundamentals of Radar with Applications to Autonomous Vehicles
Radar systems can be extremely useful for applications in autonomous vehicles. This paper seeks to show how radar systems function and how they can apply to improve autonomous vehicles. First, the basics of radar systems are presented to introduce the basic terminology involved with radar. Then, the topic of phased arrays is presented because of their application to autonomous vehicles. The topic of digital signal processing is also discussed because of its importance for all modern radar systems. Finally, examples of radar systems based on the presented knowledge are discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of radar systems in autonomous vehicles
Clutter rejection for MTI radar using a single antenna and a long integration time
Moving Target Indicators (MTI) are airborne radar systems
designed to detect and track moving vehicles or aircrafts. In this paper, we address the problem of detecting hazardous collision targets to avoid them. One of the best known solutions to solve this problem is given by the so-called Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) algorithms which optimally filter the target signal from interference and noise exploiting the specific relationship between Direction Of Arrival (DOA) and Doppler for the ground clutter. However, these algorithms require an antenna array and multiple reception channels that increase cost and complexity.
The authors propose an alternative solution using a single antenna only.
In addition to the standard Doppler shift related to the radial speed, the orthoradial speed of any target can be estimated if using a long integration time. Dangerous targets and ground clutter have different signatures in the radial-orthoradial velocity plane. An optimal detector is then proposed based on the oblique projection onto the signal subspace orthogonal to the clutter subspace. The theoretical performances of this detector are derived and a realistic radar scene simulation shows the benefits of this new MTI detector
Accurate detection of moving targets via random sensor arrays and Kerdock codes
The detection and parameter estimation of moving targets is one of the most
important tasks in radar. Arrays of randomly distributed antennas have been
popular for this purpose for about half a century. Yet, surprisingly little
rigorous mathematical theory exists for random arrays that addresses
fundamental question such as how many targets can be recovered, at what
resolution, at which noise level, and with which algorithm. In a different line
of research in radar, mathematicians and engineers have invested significant
effort into the design of radar transmission waveforms which satisfy various
desirable properties. In this paper we bring these two seemingly unrelated
areas together. Using tools from compressive sensing we derive a theoretical
framework for the recovery of targets in the azimuth-range-Doppler domain via
random antennas arrays. In one manifestation of our theory we use Kerdock codes
as transmission waveforms and exploit some of their peculiar properties in our
analysis. Our paper provides two main contributions: (i) We derive the first
rigorous mathematical theory for the detection of moving targets using random
sensor arrays. (ii) The transmitted waveforms satisfy a variety of properties
that are very desirable and important from a practical viewpoint. Thus our
approach does not just lead to useful theoretical insights, but is also of
practical importance. Various extensions of our results are derived and
numerical simulations confirming our theory are presented
Efficient Detectors for MIMO-OFDM Systems under Spatial Correlation Antenna Arrays
This work analyzes the performance of the implementable detectors for
multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division
multiplexing (OFDM) technique under specific and realistic operation system
condi- tions, including antenna correlation and array configuration.
Time-domain channel model has been used to evaluate the system performance
under realistic communication channel and system scenarios, including different
channel correlation, modulation order and antenna arrays configurations. A
bunch of MIMO-OFDM detectors were analyzed for the purpose of achieve high
performance combined with high capacity systems and manageable computational
complexity. Numerical Monte-Carlo simulations (MCS) demonstrate the channel
selectivity effect, while the impact of the number of antennas, adoption of
linear against heuristic-based detection schemes, and the spatial correlation
effect under linear and planar antenna arrays are analyzed in the MIMO-OFDM

TCM, TTCM, BICM and BICM-ID Assisted MMSE Multi-User Detected SDMA-OFDM Using Walsh-Hadamard Spreading
Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) aided Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems assisted by efficient Multi-User Detection (MUD) techniques have recently attracted intensive research interests. Forward Error Correction (FEC) schemes and frequency-domain spreading techniques can be efficiently amalgamated with SDMA-OFDM systems for the sake of improving the achievable performance. In this contribution a Coded Modulation (CM) assisted and Minimum Mean-Square Error (MMSE) multi-user detected SDMA-OFDM system combined with Walsh-Hadamard-Transform-Spreading (WHTS) across a number of subcarriers is proposed. The various CM schemes used are Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM), Turbo TCM (TTCM), Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) and Iteratively Decoded BICM (BICM-ID), which constitute bandwidth efficient schemes that combine the functions of coding and modulation. Invoking the WHTS technique is capable of further improving the average Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the CM-SDMA-OFDM system, since the bursty error effects imposed by the frequency-domain fading encountered are spread over the entire WHT block length, therefore increasing the chances of correcting the transmission errors by the CM decoders
