    A web-based teaching/learning environment to support collaborative knowledge construction in design

    A web-based application has been developed as part of a recently completed research which proposed a conceptual framework to collect, analyze and compare different design experiences and to construct structured representations of the emerging knowledge in digital architectural design. The paper introduces the theoretical and practical development of this application as a teaching/learning environment which has significantly contributed to the development and testing of the ideas developed throughout the research. Later in the paper, the application of BLIP in two experimental (design) workshops is reported and evaluated according to the extent to which the application facilitates generation, modification and utilization of design knowledge

    Understanding safety-critical interactions with a home medical device through Distributed Cognition

    As healthcare shifts from the hospital to the home, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how patients interact with home medical devices, to inform the safe and patient-friendly design of these devices. Distributed Cognition (DCog) has been a useful theoretical framework for understanding situated interactions in the healthcare domain. However, it has not previously been applied to study interactions with home medical devices. In this study, DCog was applied to understand renal patientsā€™ interactions with Home Hemodialysis Technology (HHT), as an example of a home medical device. Data was gathered through ethnographic observations and interviews with 19 renal patients and interviews with seven professionals. Data was analyzed through the principles summarized in the Distributed Cognition for Teamwork methodology. In this paper we focus on the analysis of system activities, information flows, social structures, physical layouts, and artefacts. By explicitly considering different ways in which cognitive processes are distributed, the DCog approach helped to understand patientsā€™ interaction strategies, and pointed to design opportunities that could improve patientsā€™ experiences of using HHT. The findings highlight the need to design HHT taking into consideration likely scenarios of use in the home and of the broader home context. A setting such as home hemodialysis has the characteristics of a complex and safety-critical socio-technical system, and a DCog approach effectively helps to understand how safety is achieved or compromised in such a system

    We present a framework to analyze color documents of complex layout. In addition, no assumption is made on the layout. Our framework combines in a content-driven bottom-up approach two different sources of information: textual and spatial. To analyze the text, shallow natural language processing tools, such as taggers and partial parsers, are used. To infer relations of the logical layout we resort to a qualitative spatial calculus closely related to Allen's calculus. We evaluate the system against documents from a color journal and present the results of extracting the reading order from the journal's pages.     This catalogue of work marks the second year of the MSc Adaptive Architecture and Computation, UCL Bartlett\'s one-year taught MSc in the field of digital design. Bringing together research at the Bartlett with cutting edge practice, this course aims to give students a solid theoretical and technical foundation for the use of computation as a means to realise their designs, understand the built environment, and create architecture. Themes of investigation include how the built environment can be adapted to its occupants; how form may be generated or evolved parametrically; how the experience of space can be enhanced through the integrated use of new media. In each case, computational methods are sought to improve the design and use of architecture, rather than simply be a mechanical tool for its representation. With this in mind, students are taught the fundamental theory and skills necessary to manipulate their technology at a sophisticated level. Studio time is dedicated to learning scripting and programming within a series of workshops conceived especially for designers

    This whitepaper provides decision-makers with insights on the benefits of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) for data collaborations. With recent growth and development of data sharing, public and private organisations can realise new economic and societal value potential. However, data collaboration participants often face barriers for data sharing in form of privacy, commercial and reputational risks. PETs can play a role for reducing these barriers and increasing trust in data collaborations where data cannot be shared directly, since PETs allow to generate insights without disclosing the underlying data. The paper focuses on the most important PETs and their benefits for respective use cases. It also covers challenges that need to be overcome for large-scale adoption of PETs and lastly, shows tangible steps for fostering implementation of these technologies in organisations

    Engineering simulations for cancer systems biology

    Computer simulation can be used to inform in vivo and in vitro experimentation, enabling rapid, low-cost hypothesis generation and directing experimental design in order to test those hypotheses. In this way, in silico models become a scientific instrument for investigation, and so should be developed to high standards, be carefully calibrated and their findings presented in such that they may be reproduced. Here, we outline a framework that supports developing simulations as scientific instruments, and we select cancer systems biology as an exemplar domain, with a particular focus on cellular signalling models. We consider the challenges of lack of data, incomplete knowledge and modelling in the context of a rapidly changing knowledge base. Our framework comprises a process to clearly separate scientific and engineering concerns in model and simulation development, and an argumentation approach to documenting models for rigorous way of recording assumptions and knowledge gaps. We propose interactive, dynamic visualisation tools to enable the biological community to interact with cellular signalling models directly for experimental design. There is a mismatch in scale between these cellular models and tissue structures that are affected by tumours, and bridging this gap requires substantial computational resource. We present concurrent programming as a technology to link scales without losing important details through model simplification. We discuss the value of combining this technology, interactive visualisation, argumentation and model separation to support development of multi-scale models that represent biologically plausible cells arranged in biologically plausible structures that model cell behaviour, interactions and response to therapeutic interventions
