    A Consumer-Centric Open Innovation Framework for Food and Packaging Manufacturing

But, this sector recently perceives its end-user to be wary of radically new products and changes in consumption patterns. However, new product development involves not only the product itself but also the entire manufacturing and distribution network. In this paper, we present a new ICT based framework that embraces open innovation to place customers in the product development loop but at the same time assesses and eventually coordinates the entire manufacturing and supply chain. The aim is to design new food products that consumers will buy and at the same time ensure that these products will reach the consumer in time and at adequate quantity. On the product development side, our framework enables new food products that offer an integrated sensory experience of food and packaging, which encompass customization, healthy eating, and sustainability

    Human system modelling in support of manufacturing enterprise design and change

    Organisations comprise human and technical systems that typically perform a variety of business, engineering and production roles. Human systems comprise individuals, people groups and teams that work systematically to conceive, implement, develop and manage the purposes of any enterprise in response to customer requirements. Recently attention has been paid to modelling aspects of people working within production systems, with a view to improving: production performance, effective resource allocation and optimum resource management. In the research reported, graphical and computer executable models of people have been conceived and used in support of human systems engineering. The approach taken has been to systematically decompose and represent processes so that elemental production and management activities can be modelled as explicit descriptions of roles that human systems can occupy as role holders. First of all, a preliminary modelling method (MM1) was proposed for modelling human systems in support of engineering enterprise; then MM1 was implemented and tested in a case study company 1. Based on findings of this exploratory research study an improved modelling method (MM2) was conceived and instrumented. Here characterising customer related product dynamic impacts extended MM1 modelling concepts and methods and related work system changes. MM2 was then tested in case study company 2 to observe dynamic behaviours of selected system models derived from actual company knowledge and data. Case study 2 findings enabled MM2 to be further improved leading to MM3. MM3 improvements stem from the incorporation of so-called DPU (Dynamic Producer Unit) concepts, related to the modelling of human and technical resource system components . Case study 4 models a human system for targeted users i.e. production managers etc to facilitate analysis of human configuration and also cost modelling. Modelling approaches MM2, MM3 and also Case Study 4 add to knowledge about ways of facilitating quantitative analysis and comparison between different human system configurations. These new modelling methods allow resource system behaviours to be matched to specific, explicitly defined, process-oriented requirements drawn from manufacturing workplaces currently operating in general engineering, commercial furniture and white goods industry sectors

    Effective STEM project management: a research study on best practices and strategies

    Project management is a multifaceted subject that encompasses a multitude of areas of knowledge, gathered together to move towards accomplishing a goal. This work aims to identify good practices and strategies in project management that will be implemented and that have been achieving satisfactory results in a European Project funded by the Horizo Europe program at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), Portugal, which aims to enhance and increase IPB’s capabilities within the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering) together with EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion). Through a series of surveys, assessments, measurement and comparison of internal key performance indicators this case study was made possible. Within this work, a data acquisition standard was defined and tailored for the particular project together with a risk assessment framework for monitoring, controlling and steering the project’s activities according to its performance. A group of actions and strategies were developed in order to equip the team for future project iterations, based on the enhancements identified through the initial outcomes. In conclusion, this work shall serve as a useful source of enlightenment, benchmarking foundation for future projects with similar environments and final targets such as the ones here entailed

    A DEVSECOPS APPROACH FOR DEVELOPING AND DEPLOYING CONTAINERIZED CLOUD-BASED SOFTWARE ON SUBMARINES

    There are unique challenges for using secure cloud services in disconnected resource-constrained environments and with controlled data. To address those challenges, this thesis introduces a tactical-edge platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solution with a declarative-delivery method for submarine Consolidated Afloat Network Enterprise Services (CANES) operating systems. The PaaS is adapted from the Department of Defense’s Big Bang core elements for submarine-focused outcomes. Using the Team Submarine Project Blue initiative as a case study, this thesis consists of a feasibility study for running containerized applications on different submarine-compatible baselines and applying a prototype declarative software-delivery method called ZARF. We demonstrated the feasibility of using ZARF for packaging and automated deployment of the Project Blue PaaS and its software to the submarine CANES infrastructure. This research culminated in successful integration tests on a current and future submarine hardware and software baseline. The thesis documents the execution of the research, lessons learned, and recommendations for the Navy’s path forward for development of secure software and declarative deployment in air-gapped environments.Outstanding ThesisLieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release.     A Building Information Modeling (BIM)-centric Digital Ecosystem for Smart Airport Life Cycle Management

    An increasing number of new airport infrastructure construction and improvement projects are being delivered in today\u27s modern world. However, value creation is a recurring issue due to inefficiencies in managing capital expenditures (CapEx) and operating expenses (OpEx), while trying to optimize project constraints of scope, time, cost, quality, and resources. In this new era of smart infrastructure, digitalization transforms the way projects are planned and delivered. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a key digital process technique that has become an imperative for today\u27s Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations (AECO) sector. This research suggests a BIM-centric digital ecosystem by detailing technical and strategic aspects of Airport BIM implementation and digital technology integration from a life cycle perspective. This research provides a novel approach for consistent and continuous use of digital information between business and functional levels of an airport by developing a digital platform solution that will enable seamless flow of information across functions. Accordingly, this study targets to achieve three objectives: 1- To provide a scalable know-how of BIM-enabled digital transformation; 2- To guide airport owners and major stakeholders towards converging information siloes for airport life cycle data management by an Airport BIM Framework; 3- To develop a BIM-based digital platform architecture towards realization of an airport digital twin for airport infrastructure life cycle management. Airport infrastructures can be considered as a System of Systems (SoS). As such, Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) with Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is selected as the key methodology towards designing a digital ecosystem. Applying MBSE principles leads to forming an integrating framework for managing the digital ecosystem. Furthermore, this research adopts convergent parallel mixed methods to collect and analyze multiple forms of data. Data collection tools include extensive literature and industry review; an online questionnaire; semi-structured interviews with airport owner parties; focus group discussions; first-hand observations; and document reviews. Data analysis stage includes multiple explanatory case study analyses, thematic analysis, project mapping, percent coverage analysis for coded themes to achieve Objective 1; thematic analysis, cluster analysis, framework analysis, and non-parametric statistical analysis for Objective 2; and qualitative content analysis, non-parametric statistical analysis to accomplish Objective 3. This research presents a novel roadmap toward facilitation of smart airports with alignment and integration of disruptive technologies with business and operational aspects of airports. Multiple comprehensive case study analyses on international large-hub airports and triangulation of organization-level and project-level results systematically generate scalable technical and strategic guidelines for BIM implementation. The proposed platform architecture will incentivize major stakeholders for value-creation, data sharing, and control throughout a project life cycle. Introducing scalability and minimizing complexity for end-users through a digital platform approach will lead to a more connected environment. Consequently, a digital ecosystem enables sophisticated interaction between people, places, and assets. Model-driven approach provides an effective strategy for enhanced decision-making that helps optimization of project resources and allows fast adaptation to emerging business and operational demands. Accordingly, airport sustainability measures -economic vitality, operational efficiency, natural resources, and social responsibility- will improve due to higher levels of efficiency in CapEx and OpEx. Changes in business models for large capital investments and introducing sustainability to supply chains are among the anticipated broader impacts of this study
