Because of the limited bandwidth of the channels, such random packet losses could occur, simultaneously, in the communication channels from the sensor to the controller and from the controller to the actuator. The random packet loss is assumed to obey the Bernoulli random binary distribution, and the parameter uncertainties are norm-bounded and enter into both the system and output matrices. In the presence of random packet losses, an observer-based feedback controller is designed to robustly exponentially stabilize the networked system in the sense of mean square and also achieve the prescribed Hinfin disturbance-rejection-attenuation level. Both the stability-analysis and controller-synthesis problems are thoroughly investigated. It is shown that the controller-design problem under consideration is solvable if certain linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are feasible. A simulation example is exploited to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed LMI approach

A sequence of random variables, all of which are mutually independent but obey the Bernoulli distribution, is introduced to account for the probabilistic communication delays. The measurement-missing phenomenon occurs in a random way. The missing probability for each sensor satisfies a certain probabilistic distribution in the interval. Here, the attention is focused on the analysis and design of H∞ fuzzy output-feedback controllers such that the closed-loop Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy-control system is exponentially stable in the mean square. The disturbance-rejection attenuation is constrained to a given level by means of the H∞-performance index. Intensive analysis is carried out to obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of admissible output feedback controllers, which ensures the exponential stability as well as the prescribed H∞ performance. The cone-complementarity-linearization procedure is employed to cast the controller-design problem into a sequential minimization one that is solved by the semi-definite program method. Simulation results are utilized to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design technique in this paper. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, U.K., under Grant GR/S27658/01, in part by the Royal Society, U.K., in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of

Two kinds of random delays are simultaneously considered: i) from the controller to the plant, and ii) from the sensor to the controller, via a limited bandwidth communication channel. The random delays are modeled as a linear function of the stochastic variable satisfying Bernoulli random binary distribution. The observer-based controller is designed to exponentially stabilize the networked system in the sense of mean square, and also achieve the prescribed H∞ disturbance attenuation level. The addressed controller design problem is transformed to an auxiliary convex optimization problem, which can be solved by a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. An illustrative example is provided to show the applicability of the proposed method
Finite-horizon estimation of randomly occurring faults for a class of nonlinear time-varying systems
This paper is concerned with the finite-horizon estimation problem of randomly occurring faults for a class of nonlinear systems whose parameters are all time-varying. The faults are assumed to occur in a random way governed by two sets of Bernoulli distributed white sequences. The stochastic nonlinearities entering the system are described by statistical means that can cover several classes of well-studied nonlinearities. The aim of the problem is to estimate the random faults, over a finite horizon, such that the influence from the exogenous disturbances onto the estimation errors is attenuated at the given level quantified by an H∞-norm in the mean square sense. By using the completing squares method and stochastic analysis techniques, necessary and sufficient conditions are established for the existence of the desired finite-horizon H∞ fault estimator whose parameters are then obtained by solving coupled backward recursive Riccati difference equations (RDEs). A simulation example is utilized to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault estimation method

Robust sliding mode design for uncertain stochastic systems based on H∞ control method
The official published version can be found at the link below. In this paper, the design problem of sliding mode control (SMC) is addressed for uncertain stochastic systems modeled by Itô differential equations. There exist the parameter uncertainties in both the state and input matrices, as well as the unmatched external disturbance. The key feature of this work is the integration of SMC method with H∞ technique such that the robust stochastic stability with a prescribed disturbance attenuation level can be achieved. A sufficient condition for the existence of the desired sliding mode controller is obtained via linear matrix inequalities. The reachability of the specified sliding surface is proven. Finally, a numerical simulation example is presented to illustrate the proposed method. This work was funded by The Royal Society of the U.K.;NNSF of China. Quantized H-Infinity control for nonlinear stochastic time-delay systems with missing measurements
This is the post-print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 IEEEIn this paper, the quantized H∞ control problem is investigated for a class of nonlinear stochastic time-delay network-based systems with probabilistic data missing. A nonlinear stochastic system with state delays is employed to model the networked control systems where the measured output and the input signals are quantized by two logarithmic quantizers, respectively. Moreover, the data missing phenomena are modeled by introducing a diagonal matrix composed of Bernoulli distributed stochastic variables taking values of 1 and 0, which describes that the data from different sensors may be lost with different missing probabilities. Subsequently, a sufficient condition is first derived in virtue of the method of sector-bounded uncertainties, which guarantees that the closed-loop system is stochastically stable and the controlled output satisfies H∞ performance constraint for all nonzero exogenous disturbances under the zero-initial condition. Then, the sufficient condition is decoupled into some inequalities for the convenience of practical verification. Based on that, quantized H∞ controllers are designed successfully for some special classes of nonlinear stochastic time-delay systems by using Matlab linear matrix inequality toolbox. Finally, a numerical simulation example is exploited to show the effectiveness and applicability of the results derived. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the U.K. under Grant GR/S27658/01, the Leverhulme Trust of the U.K., the Royal Society of the U.K., the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 61028008, 61134009, 61104125, 60974030, and 61074016, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany
On general systems with network-enhanced complexities
In recent years, the study of networked control systems (NCSs) has gradually become an active research area due to the advantages of using networked media in many aspects such as the ease of maintenance and installation, the large flexibility and the low cost. It is well known that the devices in networks are mutually connected via communication cables that are of limited capacity. Therefore, some network-induced phenomena have inevitably emerged in the areas of signal processing and control engineering. These phenomena include, but are not limited to, network-induced communication delays, missing data, signal quantization, saturations, and channel fading. It is of great importance to understand how these phenomena influence the closed-loop stability and performance properties
H ∞ sliding mode observer design for a class of nonlinear discrete time-delay systems: A delay-fractioning approach
Copyright @ 2012 John Wiley & SonsIn this paper, the H ∞ sliding mode observer (SMO) design problem is investigated for a class of nonlinear discrete time-delay systems. The nonlinear descriptions quantify the maximum possible derivations from a linear model, and the system states are allowed to be immeasurable. Attention is focused on the design of a discrete-time SMO such that the asymptotic stability as well as the H ∞ performance requirement of the error dynamics can be guaranteed in the presence of nonlinearities, time delay and external disturbances. Firstly, a discrete-time discontinuous switched term is proposed to make sure that the reaching condition holds. Then, by constructing a new Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional based on the idea of ‘delay fractioning’ and by introducing some appropriate free-weighting matrices, a sufficient condition is established to guarantee the desired performance of the error dynamics in the specified sliding mode surface by solving a minimization problem. Finally, an illustrative example is given to show the effectiveness of the designed SMO design scheme
Composite Disturbance Filtering: A Novel State Estimation Scheme for Systems With Multi-Source, Heterogeneous, and Isomeric Disturbances
State estimation has long been a fundamental problem in signal processing and
control areas. The main challenge is to design filters with ability to reject
or attenuate various disturbances. With the arrival of big data era, the
disturbances of complicated systems are physically multi-source, mathematically
heterogenous, affecting the system dynamics via isomeric (additive,
multiplicative and recessive) channels, and deeply coupled with each other. In
traditional filtering schemes, the multi-source heterogenous disturbances are
usually simplified as a lumped one so that the "single" disturbance can be
either rejected or attenuated. Since the pioneering work in 2012, a novel state
estimation methodology called {\it composite disturbance filtering} (CDF) has
been proposed, which deals with the multi-source, heterogenous, and isomeric
disturbances based on their specific characteristics. With the CDF, enhanced
anti-disturbance capability can be achieved via refined quantification,
effective separation, and simultaneous rejection and attenuation of the
disturbances. In this paper, an overview of the CDF scheme is provided, which
includes the basic principle, general design procedure, application scenarios
(e.g. alignment, localization and navigation), and future research directions.
In summary, it is expected that the CDF offers an effective tool for state
estimation, especially in the presence of multi-source heterogeneous
disturbances
