    Strengthening responsive and reciprocal relationships in a whānau tangata centre: An action research project

    This project came about after discussions with the general manager of the Wellington Region Free Kindergarten Association and Jeanette Clarkin-Phillips (University of Waikato) about setting up a research partnership to support the teachers at Taitoko Kindergarten in Levin. The teachers were establishing an integrated community centre (the whānau tangata centre) as part of a parent support and development initiative funded by the Ministry of Education in conjunction with the Ministry of Social Development. This initiative in Levin includes a drop-in centre for parents, parent workshops on topics of the parents’ choice, a well-resourced whānau room, facilities for infants and toddlers, school liaison visits and liaison with local health centres. The initiative at Taitoko Kindergarten is one of six pilot parent support and development projects. These pilot projects do not include any research components to evaluate the processes and outcomes for teaching and learning, or the level of engagement of the community. This Teaching and Learning Research Initiative (TLRI) project, in one centre, researched these aspects of the initiative in an ongoing action research project. The parent support and development contracts are a relatively new initiative for New Zealand, and this research project was designed to provide information to guide this teaching and learning policy for future initiatives of this nature.     Smart City Digital Transformation Across Organisational Boundaries: A Resource Orchestration perspective

    Smart City initiatives are gaining popularity, but their Digital Transformation (DT) process remains unclear. This paper investigates the DT process in Smart Cities through an empirical case study involving multiple government councils. We examine how stakeholders coordinate resources across organizational boundaries throughout the process. The paper presents a resource rationalization process model that promotes resourcefulness by enabling organizations to problematize, solve, and activate their resources. We provide insights into how councils shape resources, deploy common IoT systems, and transition from problem-solving to activation, despite differing short-term objectives. Resourcefulness is achieved theoretically by reshaping and reorganizing shared resources. Practically, this study offers practitioners guidance on restructuring, bundling, and leveraging resources to attain positive outcomes from DT, even with diverse objectives

    Optimization of energy consumption in future intelligent energy networks (or Smart Grids) will be based on grid-integrated near-real-time communications between various grid elements in generation, transmission, distribution and loads. This paper discusses some of the challenges and opportunities of communications research in the areas of smart grid and smart metering. In particular, we focus on some of the key communications challenges for realizing interoperable and future-proof smart grid/metering networks, smart grid security and privacy, and how some of the existing networking technologies can be applied to energy management. Finally, we also discuss the coordinated standardization efforts in Europe to harmonize communications standards and protocols.Comment: To be published in IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial

    The Educational Development Unit have produced a guide to assist academic staff in transforming assessment practices underpinned by technology. 'Assessing with e-Ase' highlights how technology combined with sound pedagogy has the potential to enhance the student experience of learning, teaching and assessment. Drawing on the experiences, knowledge and understanding of the e-assessment project at Middlesex University, it offers a consideration of contextual, procedural and logistical factors that may impact when using e-assessment practices. Key issues for consideration when developing and implementing e-assessment are included along with the part played by policy and strategy. Examples of departmental case studies, an outline of the support available to staff and links to resources that may provide useful additional information are also included
